Introduction: Joseph’s brothers sold him as a slave because they were jealous of him and hated him.
Background: Joseph was sold to Potiphar.
Content and Explanation: Genesis 39:1-23
Genesis 39:1-6
Friends, just like Potiphar noticed that the Lord was with Joseph so also we who have believed on the Lord Jesus Christ as our only Savior from our sins will demonstrate that the Lord is with us through the Holy Spirit (“fruit of the Spirit” Gal 5:22-3).
Friends, Potiphar gave Joseph responsibility because he could see that Joseph was trustworthy - that’s what the Lord produced in Joseph’s life, but this trust would be tested.
Genesis 39:7-12
Friends, Potiphar’s wife tempts Joseph to sin with her against God, daily!
But, friends, Joseph reminds Potiphar’s wife that this is sin (define) against God even if Potiphar wouldn’t know about it; God always knows.
Eventually, Potiphar’s wife’s temptations became so many that Joseph just had to run away so that he could please the Lord.
Genesis 39:13-20
Friends, Potiphar’s wife lies about Joseph and holds onto Joseph’s coat as evidence for her lie!
Potiphar ends up believing a lie (like Jacob) and throws Joseph in prison (like the pit; Pharaoh’s prisoners; unhappy).
Genesis 39:21-23
Friends, even in prison, the Lord is with Joseph; the Lord’s presence is unrestricted by circumstance!
Friends, the jailer gave Joseph more responsibility (Potiphar) that the Lord will use in the near future.
Friends, Joseph described sin as wickedness and sin against the Lord Who knows all and must punish sinners forever in Hell away from His presence; sin hurts others (never sin in isolation).
Friends, you might have friends like Potiphar’s wife who tempted Joseph to sin daily (attention away from your teacher); tempted to lie to cover up our sin and try to escape punishment.
Friends, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ as your only Savior from your sins Who can forgive you of inviting others to sin and lying, whether to cover up sin or otherwise
Scripture Memory - 1 John 4:4 “4 You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.”
Friends, confess to the Lord your sin (tempting, lying, others) and remember this truth that the Holy Spirit is greater and He can help us to overcome temptation to sin.
Repetition - 1 John 4:4
