Introduction: Last week we looked at how the sin of jealousy only grows into more sins; Dum Dum - you plot, you take & you lie
Avoiding jealousy; Joseph’s first dream has a followup
Content and Explanation: Genesis 37:9-35
Joseph’s 2nd Dream, Celestial; Genesis 37:9–11 Look, friends, Joseph has a second dream.
bundles of wheat> Joseph’s authority
Whole family as represented by sun, moon, and stars> Joseph’s authority.
Friends, Joseph’s wrong attitude noticed by his father made his brothers jealous.
We know when we say things in a proud way, sin.
Transition: Jacob’s errand for Joseph
Joseph Commissioned; Genesis 37:12–17 (summarize)
Friends, Jacob sends Joseph to check on his brothers in Shechem but he has to walk 15 more miles to Dothan instead!
Friends, look what his brothers do next when they see Joseph coming.
Joseph Betrayed and His Father Deceived, Genesis 37:18-35
Joseph’s Brothers’ Plot, Genesis 37:18–20 Friends, Joseph’s brothers think about murdering Joseph and consider how to lie to cover it up (always wrong)!
Reuben Attempts to Rescue, Genesis 37:21–24 Though Reuben attempts to rescue Joseph through a pit, Joseph is mistreated by having his special coat taken away before being thrown into the pit.
Enslavement, Genesis 37:25–28 Friends, Joseph’s brothers callously eat while Joseph suffers and then suggest to sell Joseph as if being a slave is better than killing him!
Friends, we can act the same way by looking at people as obstacles to (getting in the way of) what we want (I’d watch what I want to if he/she weren’t here).
Friends, while we may not have murdered anyone, we have lied to cover up our wrong, at one time or another.
Jacob Deceived, Genesis 37:31–35 Friends, Joseph’s brothers deceived (lying, God hates) their father into thinking Joseph died by killing an animal and using its blood to spread on the coat; Jacob believed them.
Application: Friends, the question that I asked at the beginning was, what do we do when we’re tempted to be jealous?
Friends, Joseph’s brothers compounded their sin of jealousy with more sins: unkind words, wicked thoughts, mistreatment, and lying about him.
Friends, God hates all sin, including jealousy when we look at people as obstacles to what we want.
You can be forgive of jealousy and all sin if you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ to save you from your sins.
Scripture Memory - Hebrews 13:5 “Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.””
When jealous, believers confess their sin to the Lord.
To avoid jealousy, we ask Jesus to help us to be satisfied with Him (we want Jesus more than anything: 1) Creator, 2) Ruler, 3) Forever, 4) Unchanging).
When you see something someone else has that you want, ask the Lord to help you avoid jealousy and please Him by being satisfied with Him.
Repetition - Hebrews 13:5
