You may explain to a child all the medical reasons why he must have a shot in the arm, but when the nurse gets ready to plunge that needle into his arm, he runs to Mommy. Comfort comes not in always knowing the reason why, but in knowing the comforter.
Jesus isn't saying (like David) that he is an actual worm. The idea as he continues, is in the reproach of men. How despised He is still he is inferring that Christ experiences displays that we to can accomplish much even in our suffering. No answer is the answer. But still this isn't about us, but about Jesus. We can learn from it. I am not saying if you are suffering just live in it, but I am saying don’t think God is against you in it (unless you’re in sin, then all bets are off).
By way of introduction, hold your place here in Psalm 22 and turn to Philippians 3:7–11 “But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. 8Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; 10that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, 11if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.”
To begin tonights look at Psalm 22, lets go look at Mark 15:25–39 together. Keep in mind as we read that at this point Jesus has been kept up, beaten, scourged to within an inch of his life, and now,
Mark 15:25–39 NKJV
25 Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him. 26 And the inscription of His accusation was written above: THE KING OF THE JEWS 27 With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left. 28 So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with the transgressors.” 29 And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30 save Yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 Likewise the chief priests also, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, “He saved others; Himself He cannot save. 32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Even those who were crucified with Him reviled Him. 33 Now when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 35 Some of those who stood by, when they heard that, said, “Look, He is calling for Elijah!” 36 Then someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink, saying, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down.” 37 And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last. 38 Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 So when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, “Truly this Man was the Son of God!”
Now as we read we need to remember the struggle of David. A young man from a successful family from where? Bethlehem, You got it, same as? Jesus, right! He was the youngest of the brothers and was working in the fields as a shepherd. Not good cred. The prophet samuel thought everyone of his other brothers looked kingly. David was pretty but not king material.
Boy was he wrong. Thats when we read Gods statement that 1 Samuel 16:7 “But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”” Here, first this is about and from David and he points to a Greater David.
Psalm 22:1–2 NKJV
1 My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from helping Me, And from the words of My groaning? 2 O My God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not hear; And in the night season, and am not silent.
now we know that Jesus is referencing these Scriptures, because thats how they did it. So rather than break it down in how we referenced it in Mark 15.
Now as David prophetically wrote here, we also see the effect of sin on a man and sin, placed on the son of God.
Forsaken doesn't mean cast aside forever, “Forsaken” is a strong expression for personal abandonment, intensely felt by David and supremely experienced by Christ on the cross. What could compare with the weight of the literal world on your shoulders? And christ had to experience that separation as he took my sin on himself
even a moment of this would feel like complete abandonment. However, jesus here relates hat this is about Him. What He is doing for us.
There are seasons when the brightness of our Father’s smile is eclipsed by clouds and darkness. But let us remember that God never does really forsake us. It is only a seeming forsaking with us, but in Christ’s case it was a real forsaking. God only knows how much we grieve, sometimes, at a little withdrawal of our Father’s love; but the real turning away of God’s face from his Son—who shall calculate how deep the agony which it caused him when he cried, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”
Charles Spurgeon
Jesus Cries out not men, but to God in all He does. Remember, he has humbled himself to this death. The death of the cross. The suffering that Christ experiences displays that we to can accomplish much even in our suffering. No answer is the answer. But still this isn't about us, but about Jesus. We can learn from it.
another note - how often do we blame God for our circumstance? David no doubt, how can i be anointed as king and live like a hobo? How can God be my father and my wife leave me? My kids abandon the Lord? It can be easy to “feel” this way. But keep reading to the end.
how many christians experienced this as the animals tore at them in the circuses of Rome? Oh Lord forgive me my weakness. Your grace is sufficient for me. And even still help us to remember that this world is not all there is.
Psalm 22:3–5 NKJV
3 But You are holy, Enthroned in the praises of Israel. 4 Our fathers trusted in You; They trusted, and You delivered them. 5 They cried to You, and were delivered; They trusted in You, and were not ashamed.
God is truly our Lord and king in how we praise how we trust. And we see His love in all He did for those that came before and us who come after. Even when you don’t respond, you deliver.
Psalm 22:6–8 NKJV
6 But I am a worm, and no man; A reproach of men, and despised by the people. 7 All those who see Me ridicule Me; They shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, 8 “He trusted in the Lord, let Him rescue Him; Let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!”
Jesus isn't saying (like David) that he is an actual worm. The idea as he continues, is in the reproach of men. How despised He is.
Almost literally what they quoted. Look at what we read again in Mat 27 and then we are told in Luke 23:35 “And the people stood looking on. But even the rulers with them sneered, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.”” David lived in caves used as bathrooms, forced to stay in wilderness living like an animal at times. Sneered is shoot out the lip. Its almost like Davids life was pointing at something. Feels like playing the weirdest game of Clue. Ever play it? Know how its played? This is like, Caiaphas, Using Herod, in Jerusalem, on a cross. Oh, and it was guessed centuries before.
Psalm 22:9–11 NKJV
9 But You are He who took Me out of the womb; You made Me trust while on My mother’s breasts. 10 I was cast upon You from birth. From My mother’s womb You have been My God. 11 Be not far from Me, For trouble is near; For there is none to help.
taught as a child to walk with god, he learned to trust God by trusting the Love of his mother. The same for the infant Jesus. When we remember the love of our family, God shows us His love is more.
not just that. again, even before we depended on God we were dependent on Him. Remember when we were a kid and we thought we could do anything? But what did we do when the dinner bell rang and it was mac& cheese night? we came running, dependent in our independence. God kept us for the day.
Psalm 22:12–13 NKJV
12 Many bulls have surrounded Me; Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled Me. 13 They gape at Me with their mouths, Like a raging and roaring lion.
he is going to say pierced later, like with bull horns or teeth of the lion or claws. Either way its about being attacked like by an animal. They hate Jesus. Have you ever seen a bull attack? Its brutal. We had a mens breakfast at Blakes one time. The bulls fighting each other was awesome. What if they did that to us?
Bulls with jaws and teeth like a lion? No, but again, being ravaged as if by animals.
Psalm 22:14–15 NKJV
14 I am poured out like water, And all My bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It has melted within Me. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And My tongue clings to My jaws; You have brought Me to the dust of death.
he bled sweat. Hanging from the cross his arms were out of socket, his hips as well from hanging on the nails. They brought Him to the dust, but Jesus gave up His own breath. There isn't much left to hold on with. Nothing but faith.
Psalm 22:16–18 NKJV
16 For dogs have surrounded Me; The congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet; 17 I can count all My bones. They look and stare at Me. 18 They divide My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.
again, like animals hunting prey, they surround and pierced and very specific here. This is speaking of the inhumanity on display here. Though jesus was pummeled, pulled nearly apart to be crucified, yet, nothing broken. Isaiah 53:5 “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.” He is the pierced one Zechariah 12:10 ““And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.”
As jesus hung on the cross, he saw - John 19:24 “They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says: “They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.” Therefore the soldiers did these things.” Matthew 27:35 “Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: “They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.”” they didn't want to tear his main robe so they gambled for that one.
Psalm 22:19–21 (NKJV)
19 But You, O Lord, do not be far from Me; O My Strength, hasten to help Me! 20 Deliver Me from the sword, My precious life from the power of the dog. 21 Save Me from the lion’s mouth And from the horns of the wild oxen! You have answered Me.
no matter the form, nature or humility of the death, God can display His glory in it. Look, christians were mocked for worshipping a crucified God. But we know God used that to atone for the sins of all mankind, beginning to end.
AND HE WILL ANSWER. Sometimes, we need to remember, being nailed to a cross is us being in the middle of His will.
Psalm 22:22–26 NKJV
22 I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You. 23 You who fear the Lord, praise Him! All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him, And fear Him, all you offspring of Israel! 24 For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; Nor has He hidden His face from Him; But when He cried to Him, He heard. 25 My praise shall be of You in the great assembly; I will pay My vows before those who fear Him. 26 The poor shall eat and be satisfied; Those who seek Him will praise the Lord. Let your heart live forever!
No matter, still Jesus cried out to Him!
Psalm 22:27–28 NKJV
27 All the ends of the world Shall remember and turn to the Lord, And all the families of the nations Shall worship before You. 28 For the kingdom is the Lord’s, And He rules over the nations.
This hasn't happened yet, but it will.
Psalm 22:29 NKJV
29 All the prosperous of the earth Shall eat and worship; All those who go down to the dust Shall bow before Him, Even he who cannot keep himself alive.
No matter who, all will bow. Living and dead. All. Isaiah 26:19 “Your dead shall live; Together with my dead body they shall arise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in dust; For your dew is like the dew of herbs, And the earth shall cast out the dead.”
from Dust you have come to dust you will,
Some reject the salvation offered in jesus and suicide or kill themselves with substances, and think that they escape judgement in death. But this isnt the case. As we see, still they will bow.
Psalm 22:30–31 NKJV
30 A posterity shall serve Him. It will be recounted of the Lord to the next generation, 31 They will come and declare His righteousness to a people who will be born, That He has done this.
Isaiah 53:10 “Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.”
it is done/finshed John 19:30 “So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.” When God does a work, it is truly done.
The praise comes not because of the suffering but through it. “It is well that we should think, sometimes, of the Upper Room, and of the Last Supper, and of His soul ‘exceeding sorrowful unto death’; of Gethsemane, the deep shadow of the olive trees, his loneliness, prayers, and disappointment with his disciples, his bloody sweat; the traitor’s kiss, the binding, the blow in the face, the spitting, the buffeting, the mocking, the scourging, the crown of thorns, the smiting; the sorrowful way, and burdensome cross, the exhaustion and collapse; the stripping, the impaling, the jeers of his foes, the flight of his friends; the hours on the cross, the darkness, his being forsaken of God; his thirst, and the end. And because of it, we can approach our God. Receive this work done for us. Enter into eternity.
Few samples of quotes of Ps22 in NT: The New Testament makes numerous allusions to Psalm 22, mainly during the crucifixion of Jesus.
Verse 1, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?", is quoted in Mark 15:34; Matthew 27:46 Codex Vaticanus transliterates this differently from the canonical Greek text. Codex Vaticanus Matthew 27.46 has: Eloey, Eloey, lema sabaktanei which is similar to the old Syriac Psalm 22 Alóhi Alóhi lmóno shbáqthoni. Codex Vaticanus Mark 15.34 has: Eloi, Eloi, lama zabafthanei which matches the Hebrew Psalm 22 (אלי אלי למה עזבתני) Elí, Elí, láma azavtháni.
Verse 7, "They hurl insults, shaking their heads", is quoted in Mark 15:29; Matthew 27:39
Verse 8, "He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him", is quoted in Matthew 27:43
Verse 18, "They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment", is quoted in Mark 15:24; Matthew 27:35; Luke 23:34; John 19:24
Verse 22, "I will declare your name to my people; in the assembly I will praise you", is quoted Hebrews 2:12
