1. Hold to the Pattern

2 Timothy 1:13 NASB95
13 Retain the standard of sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.
Order of words in Greek - “the standard retain of sound words.”

the standard = the pattern, outline, sketch
retain = keep, “holding fast to matters of transcendent importance.”
sound teaching = healthy words.
REFERENCE TO “HEALTHY” (SOUND, TRUE, CORRECT) TEACHING (OR FAITH OR SPEECH)
1 Timothy 1:10 (NASB95)
10 and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching,
1 Timothy 6:3 (NASB95)
3 If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness,
2 Timothy 4:3 (NASB95)
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires,
Titus 1:9 (NASB95)
9 holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.
Titus 2:1 (NASB95)
1 But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine.
Imagine if we had a painting of the face of Jesus. Paul is essentially saying we have that image by putting together all the truths about Jesus and the salvation He won for us we arrive at a portrait of the Savior.
But if the individual parts are changed, then portrait is not accurate. For instance the scriptures teach us that Jesus is the spotless lamb of God, He is sinless. It also tells us that he rose from the dead bodily. These truths help us form a theological picture of Jesus. If someone does not hold to those truths (or doctrines) then the portrait changes. That is a different Jesus!
In Faith and Love - not just in wrote memory or stale academics, but in living
Romans 6:17 NASB95
17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed,

2. Guard the Treasure

2 Timothy 1:14 NASB95
14 Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you.

14 τὴν καλὴν παραθήκην φύλαξον διὰ πνεύματος ἁγίου τοῦ ἐνοικοῦντος ἐν ἡμῖν.

Guard = maintain, cherish
Through the Holy Spirit = Paul could not micro manage this. Paul was about to die and Timothy would remain on without Paul’s oversight. The only way that Timothy could accomplish this was with the help of the Holy Spirit.
The Treasure = the good deposit which is the body of doctrine that Paul had taught him.
Matthew 25:13–30 NASB95
13 “Be on the alert then, for you do not know the day nor the hour. 14 “For it is just like a man about to go on a journey, who called his own slaves and entrusted his possessions to them. 15 “To one he gave five talents, to another, two, and to another, one, each according to his own ability; and he went on his journey. 16 “Immediately the one who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and gained five more talents. 17 “In the same manner the one who had received the two talents gained two more. 18 “But he who received the one talent went away, and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. 19 “Now after a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. 20 “The one who had received the five talents came up and brought five more talents, saying, ‘Master, you entrusted five talents to me. See, I have gained five more talents.’ 21 “His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ 22 “Also the one who had received the two talents came up and said, ‘Master, you entrusted two talents to me. See, I have gained two more talents.’ 23 “His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ 24 “And the one also who had received the one talent came up and said, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow and gathering where you scattered no seed. 25 ‘And I was afraid, and went away and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what is yours.’ 26 “But his master answered and said to him, ‘You wicked, lazy slave, you knew that I reap where I did not sow and gather where I scattered no seed. 27 ‘Then you ought to have put my money in the bank, and on my arrival I would have received my money back with interest. 28 ‘Therefore take away the talent from him, and give it to the one who has the ten talents.’ 29 “For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away. 30 “Throw out the worthless slave into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
