Welcome/Prayer/Scripture

Good Morning Church , It has been quite a week for our faith community, I am so glad we can come together and worship the risen Lord this morning, Lets pray and present ourselves before God for what He has for us this Morning.
Last Week We looked at article 6 and focused on what Connects us. Divine Image. Common Home. The power of Choice.
This week we are looking at article 11: Baptism. Famous for.
As anabaptists we believe in three baptisms: Spirit, Water, and the Blood.
Where does that come from 1 John 5:6-8. (slide)
As we walk through this article, Id like to look at these three baptisms like the process of doing laundry. (S)

Baptism of the Spirit- is not a moment, but process of God’s work in and through his people! (S)

If we think about this image of doing Laundry there was a point where our parents were doing our laundry without our knowledge of it. Maybe even before we were born! (Baby)

Lets look at God’s work in the Biblical narrative starting with creation.

Creation: Chaos Waters. God brings order out of Chaos. Gen 3 Humans bring Chaos back into the World. God Responds in Action. Whenever his people are in trouble God rescues them.
Noah and the Flood: Humanity Falls into Chaos. God removes his hand from creation and “de-creation occurs as the Chaos Waters are released” But God Rescues Noah and Family out of the Flood.
Exodus. Pharoah has enslaved God’s people and He rescues them .
Joshua in the Wilderness. Enemies. Hunger. Themselves.
Out of Slavery (Again) Out of Babylon
God in the flesh comes to rescue all of Humanity through is Son

Pause: Are we starting see that God has been working since the beginning to bring all of us right here where we are now?

Here is what We believe: The baptism of the Holy Spirit enables believers to walk in newness of life, to live in community with Christ and the church, to offer Christ’s healing and forgiveness to those in need, to witness boldly to the good news of Christ, and to hope in the sharing of Christ’s future glory.
It is God’s Spirit and Work that Leads us to and out of Water Baptism. So baptism of the Holy Spirit is not merely an an event or an annointing, but the work of God in and through his people from creation until now.
Let’s transition to the next, baptism

Baptism by Water- Water Baptism is a sign Going through the Waters and of Allegiance to Christ. (S)

This is kind of like the wash cycle, the water is a symbol of being washed and made clean. But this idea wasnt existed long before the washing machine!
Going through the Waters- Noah. Exodus. Joshua and the Jordan. Isa 43:1-3. Gentile converts. Jesus goes through the waters as He is baptized in the Jordan. Paul makes the explicit connection between going through the waters and Christ in Romans 6:4-10. Paul says this is something we Do Daily. We Die to Self Every Day!
Allegiance to Christ. Faith as Allegiance. 1 Peter 3:21 (s) describes baptism as a pledge.
Pledge of Allegiance
We believe in an age of accountability, we believe it must be an informed Decision.
My Baptism Story.
Not just single act of Allegiance but a progressive Allegiance.
(Slide) This connects with doing laundry because imagine how many times we do laundry in a year, Think about the shirt you are wearing right now has gone through the was cycle. Just as you grow you do more laundry, when you get married, when you have kids when you have grand kids. You do more laundry with each stage of life.

Baptism of Blood or Suffering- What is that? (S)

This is what the Creed says (Slide): The baptism of blood, or baptism of suffering, is the offering of one’s life, even to death. Jesus understood the giving of his life through the shedding of his blood for others as a baptism.3 He also spoke about his disciples’ suffering and death as a baptism.4 Those who accept water baptism commit themselves to follow Jesus in giving their lives for others, in loving their enemies, and in renouncing violence, even when it means their own suffering or death.
Here is what Jesus says in the Gospels about the Baptism of Blood and Suffering .
Basically, as Jesus shed his blood and died, we may be called to that same end. Total commitment to following Jesus Even unto Death.
Early Anabaptist, not only believed this with their minds, but lived it as they faced persecution and even death for their radical commitment to following Jesus.
Their commitment was a progressive commitment (Progressive Conversion to Apple starting in 2013). Iphone. Ipad. Macbook. Mac Mini. Airpods. Apple Pencil. Air Tag - As Ive Grown so has my commitment.
In terms of doing laundry, its like how our dirty clothes slowly build up in the hamper. Eventually, it reaches the point where we run out of close and forced to make the dreaded decision to do laundry.
