READ Hebrews 4:14-5:10

My goal is to use this passage of scripture to show us that Jesus is the better high priest. Why and how he meets and fulfills the requirements and how he is altogether superior. The result of that being that we can 100% know and believe that verse 16 is true.
PRAY
GREATNESS IN SPORTS
Hebrews 4:14 (ESV)
Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

JESUS

Since...
Ch 1: God the Son, co-eternal with Father and Spirit, creator of all things, revelation of God, radiance and glory of God, exact imprint of God’s nature, upholder of the universe, sustainer of all things, the victor who sat down, superior to angels
Ch 2: Founder of salvation, King who is crowned, our brother,
Ch 3: greater than Moses, both God’s apostle and high priest, Cornerstone of God’s house, which we are
APOSTLE REPRESENTS GOD TO MAN, HIGH PRIEST REPRESENTS MAN TO GOD
JESUS IS BOTH
Ch 4: Jesus indeed is in heaven. He lived, he died, he rose from the dead, he ascended into heaven and IS at the right hand of the Father crowned in glory and honor.
Ch 4: Jesus is our high Priest. The better high priest.
Hebrews 4:14 (ESV)
Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
Last week the scripture made us take a hard look in the mirror...

Are you taking faith seriously?

Resting in Christ’s work for your salvation, his justification, righteousness, propitiation
Your works, your merit, your checklist
That is futile, it is grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone to reconcile you to God
Behavior cannot save us. Belief does. and that true belief transforms our behavior by the power of the HOly SPirit in our hearts.
Let us Hold Fast,
cling to him,
grab onto him,
depend on him,
seek him with our whole heart
Hold fast to that confession of Christ!

ROLE of HIGH PRIEST

Hebrews 5:1 ESV
For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.

4 THINGS WE ARE TOLD ABOUT THE HIGH PRIEST

2 qualifications
2 responsibilities
Hebrews 5:1
HUMAN
CHOSEN BY GOD
APPOINTED TO REPRESENT HUMANITY TO GOD
OFFER GIFTS AND SACRIFICES

2 QUALIFICATIONS FOR HIGH PRIESTS

Hebrews 5:1

HUMAN

To represent humanity to God, our mediator has to be one of us. Otherwise, they wouldn’t know what we go through or even comprehend the temptations of sin
Hebrews 5:2–3 (ESV)
He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness.
Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people.
Human, understands the sinners, and can deal gently because they are the same

CHOSEN BY GOD

Hebrews 5:4 ESV
And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.
Aaron chosen by God.
Levite, and through that tribe of Israel the priests would come.
down from Father to son
Eleazar became High Priest after Aaron, when the Lord told Moses to take the robes off Aaron and put them on Him
Chosen, by God, from among men

2 RESPONSIBILITY OF HIGH PRIESTS

REPRESENT HUMANITY TO GOD

Hebrews 5:1 “For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.”
Hebrews 9:6–7 (ESV)
These preparations having thus been made, the priests go regularly into the first section, performing their ritual duties,
but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people.
Once a year the High Priest and only the high priest would go into the Holy of Holies, 2nd room,
The holy of holies was the place where heaven and earth came together.
ark an mercy seat

OFFERS GIFTS AND SACRIFICES FOR SINS

separated from the first by a veil, and
give a blood offering from a
perfect spotless lamb.
This is how you were made right with God
Once a year, the High Priest
Represent us to God
If you went into the HOly Of Holies you would die
Sin High Priest woul die

WHAT MAKES JESUS THE GREAT HIGH PRIEST?

TRULY GOD, TRULY MAN

JESUS: truly God, truly man
Eternal, God the Son, 2nd person of the trinity, did not cease to be divine
Put on humanity, became human
Hebrews 5:7 (ESV)
In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.
UTMOST IMPORTANCE
If Jesus was not 100% God his salvation is limited at best
If Jesus not 100% man he would not be able to represent us and reconcile us to God
Blood sacrifice to cover sins, he had to have blood
Hebrews 4:15 (ESV)
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Our Weaknesses, or Infirmities
“want of strength”
Physically limited
Hunger,
thirst,
exhaustion,
emotion, a
decaying body,
physical pain
Jesus drove one of these things around 33 years guys
Tempted or Tested in ever respect
Satan tempted Jesus to sin regarding
hunger and thirst in the dessert
Pride, to prove himself
Power
Hard to comprehend, Jesus was tempted every way I was? Yet without sin.
Temptations in Relationship
Anger,
lust,
greed,
pride,
sloth,
productivity,
fear,
wanting to be liked, a
accolades and accomplishment
Yet without sin.
CS Lewis in Mere Christianity. Aman walking against the wind, in a hurricane, when it gets too much, he is forced to lay down, to give in, never knowing what it would be 10 minutes later. Jesus never laid down, he endured all our temptations and testings without giving in. Only he truly knows the cost and knows the strength of temptation better than any of us.
also tempted beyond what we are
Tempted to walk away in the garden
Tempted to get angels to get him off the cross during the 6 hours he hung there suffocating to death
Thirsty, hungry, despised, rejected, scorned, shamed, embarrassed, abandoned, lonely, misunderstood, falsely accused, suffocated, tortured, killed.
Hebrews 4:15 (ESV)
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Sympathize means to “suffer with”
Solidarity.
Better than angels because
angels don’t die, they don’t fear death.
When betrayed, when abandoned, when misunderstood, when we want to throw in the towel…right there we have a friend who knows exactly what that feels like. Sympathizes. Suffers with.

JESUS WAS CHOSEN BY GOD TO BE HIGH PRIEST FOREVER

Hebrews 5:4–6 (ESV)
And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.
So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”;
as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”
Ephesians 1:4 (ESV)
even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love
Planned
Hebrews 5:6 ESV
as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”

Melchizedek (different)

is the Priest and King of Salem. Name means King of Righteousness and King of Peace
Not from the line of Levi like other High Priests
He paints of picture of Christ, much more in chapter 7
No other Priest has also ever been King

Jesus chosen by God, after the order of Melchizedek, to be a better, greater,

Chosen to be a priest FOREVER and the final High Priest

2 RESPONSIBILITY OF HIGH PRIESTS

JESUS REPRESENTS HUMANITY TO GOD AND GOD TO HUMANITY

Hebrews 5:2–3 ESV
He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people.
Moses represented God to man,
God gave moses the law and
moses gave it to the people
Aaron was the High Priest, he
represented man to God,
only he was allowed in the Holy of Holies
Jesus is both, at the same time.

Only possible because of his perfection and obedience

Hebrews 5:7–10 (ESV)
In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.
Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered.
And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,
being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

Jesus learned obedience? He was made perfect?

Experientially perfect

perfection completed through obedience
Christ was sinless, perfect, holy,
even through his prayers,
sweating blood asking the father for another way,
he was obedient to death.

Putting the stamp of perfection on his human life through his final breath on the cross.

Perfected as a savior, a
sympathizer with sinners,
perfected as a high priest

He was both high priest and sacrifice

JESUS OFFERED HIMSELF AS THE GIFT AND SACRIFICE FOR SINS, ONCE AND FOR ALL

Hebrews 7:26–27 (ESV)
For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.
He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself.

JESUS BLOOD IS THE MOST PRECIOUS, PERFECT, POWERFUL SACRIFICE ever

Enough to cover mine, yours, everyone in this room, every person who had ever and will ever call on the name of the Lord for salvation.
Not enough for today, or for a year, or for 10 years....forever
for all your sins past present and future
It’s inexaustible
Hebrews 5:9 (ESV)
And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,
Romans 5:8–9 “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.”
Colossians 1:21–22 “And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him,

WHAT ELSE HAPPENED?

Matthew 27:51 “And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.”

We Gained Access to God the Father through Jesus

Romans 5, Ephesians 2, and Ephesians 3 says We now have direct access to God through Christ

no more human representative

no more blood sacrifice
Christ fulfilled the roll forever

Jesus is high priest

Jesus is savior

Jesus is mediator

Jesus is advocate

Jesus lives to make intercession for us

CLOSING

THIS VERSE IS TRUE

Hebrews 4:16 (ESV)
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

1. First time you have a need, Salvation

2. Hesitant

Hebrews 4:16 (ESV)
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Expecting to find rejection or disappointment
While enemies, Christ died
High Priest atoned for all your sins past present future
Tore the Veil

ALSO: Earthly Father is NOT God

GOD CHOSE TO NAME HIS THRONE “GRACE”

3. What I am Guilty of...... “not drawing near”

Why do we pray as little as we do?
PRIDE
Draw near in “time of need”
Pride is thinking you deserve things your way but also
Pride is thinking you are not Needy
Confess
Pray more confessing need
Draw near more
