Mark 9:14-29; Help Our Unbelief

Sermon in a sentence: Faith is a gift from God that should grow.

The Faith of the Disciples

The disciples demonstrated a lack of faith and prayer. (Mark 6:7)
The disciples that went up on the mountain demonstrated their weak faith and prayer.
The disciples that were left clearly did not have success over this evil spirit.
They had counted on the power of Jesus to compensate for their lack of prayer and connection to Jesus.
Jesus even calls his disciples a faithless generation.
We must not forgot how gracious Jesus is with us that he puts up with us!
At the same time, we must take these sharp words of criticism to heart and not follow in the footsteps of the disciples.

The Faith of the Father

The father demonstrated faith when he brought his son to Jesus for healing.
What an amazing display of faith. He still has doubt but he still brings his son to meet Jesus.
One of my greatest fears as a father is that I will be a stumbling block between my children and Jesus.
The father also demonstrated a broken faith that needed help.
God can still work miracles despite our faith not merely because of our faith.
We should recognize our shortcomings and repent of them! We need to be honest with ourselves and God.

The Faith of the Son

Jesus demonstrated perfect obedience and faith during his earthly ministry.
This entire story compares others with Jesus
A sick and tormented son - Jesus will take on the sins of his people
A desperate father with no answers - Jesus is never NOT in control
the disciples were not praying and connected to the source of their authority - Jesus was consistently in praying and was always connected to the will of his Father
Jesus taught his disciples they can grow their faith through prayer.
