Words of Truth

Introduction:
Did you leave here last week grumbling about the Sermon that Jesus gave?
I certainly hope not
It was to me a beautiful
yet challenging to fully understand message.
I spoke of confirmation of who Jesus is
The Path way to Salvation
and the Power of that Salvation.
So why were you not grumbling.....
Following Jesus is HARD
Maybe because you know the Truth
and like Peter in the last verses of our message today
you know the Words of Eternal life in your heart.
There is a sense of simplicity —- JUST BELIEVE
yet there is a deeper call that we learned from the Bread
we must become
So the Simple explanation is
We must believe and become
We must be IN CHRIST
Following Jesus is Hard
and the Closer i walk with Him the Harder it is
It is not hard to obey Jesus
if the World wasn’t fighting against you
We all deeply want the Fruit of the Spirit around us
The Jews and other followers of Jesus heard the same message you heard last week and they
were grumbling
BECAUSE IT IS HARD TO FOLLOW JESUS
Those false teachers out there that are preaching a materialist life blessed by God by doing,
giving and seeking the things of the world
are leading the Sheep to a cliff
Following Jesus is hard
stay with me.....
Jesus is the way maker
Jesus is the burden taker
Jesus is the Joy bringer
Jesus is everlasting life.
Lets read together
John 6:60–71 (ESV)
60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?”
61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this?
62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?
63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.)
65 And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”
66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.
67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?”
68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life,
69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”
70 Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.”
71 He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.

Why are they Grumbling?

My buddy likes to say “ why you crying?”
I hate to twist his funny statement into a sermon
But what is he saying ——— suck it up?
but there is a sense that it means “ TRUST _ WORRY AND WHINING isn’t helping anything”
I can see Peter saying that in real time at this event.
Here we need to clarify up front that the
Disciples are All the Followers of Christ,
this does not include the twelve
as we have it clarified in vs 70
ITS football season. I am a casual fan
my current pattern on Sunday is to come in to be part of the 7:30 class, then 9 am be here with you
then attend the 11 am class.
most weekends i head home
and before much else i like to just sit and rest a little.
these sunday morning take the energy from me and it is time to recharge.
Currently i like to come home and watch RED ZONE.
ah the ADHD guys perfect football companion.
one game, four games, back to two. AWESOMENESS
im a casual fan —- I know the team and some of the players
i like watching but I don’t get emotionally involved.
Yet to many people this is not enough. I am not a REAL FAN
Let me explain:
There are two types of FANS
Casual and Die Hard
The first is the Casual fan or the word in the original English translation is BANDWAGON
They know a few players, maybe the coach
they know the colors of the team
maybe they have the schedule of games downloaded on your google calendar
They own a few emblems of the team, shirt, hat etc...
They watch a few games but it is a casual watch or they turn it off or switch to something else.
Us casual guys like to watch games but don’t get to connected or involved.
This church, that church, this message, this song
BUFFET CHRISTIANS
little of this.
little of that.
i will make my own plate
and then complain
if I don’t like it No problem
i am not connected anyway
it most certainly happens a lot in church
but it really is
talking about our commitment to GOD
to learning the WAY of CHRISTIANS
JESUS IS ADDRESSING CASUAL CHRISTIANITY in these verses.
the CASUAL CHRISTIAN:
know a few parts of the Bible
They know where the church is
they may even have the app or follow it during the week
They have a few items around the house, Christian sayings, verses, even wear a cross or have Bibles
They are Casual Christians like casual fans
they like the Winner, but not the DINNER
they see others with the bread
and they want more bread ——— just the wrong kind.
They like the FEEL GOOD, they like the GUILTY relief
they especially like the concert, the funny preacher, and the big stadium auditorium to hit comfortable in
Yet most Christians will walk away when it gets tough.
Here in our passages we see the exact same.
Jesus has just feed them, offered the Bread of Life, and
The Person, The Path and the Promise
Proclaimed He is the Way the PERSON
Proclaimed the Way
The Path to Salvation
The Promise of Eternal Life.
The Words got hard to hear and they grumbled.
The Followers were casual fans
They were grumbling because it was not what they DESIRED
it was not pleasing to their ears.
CHRISTIANS listen to me close
Jesus just taught them
that you need to be ALL IN
And it was TOO HARD
Too much of this is in our church today.
We are not talking about all of you.
but i am talking about the
Casual Christians around us.
GK Chesterton a writer said this:
Christianity has been tried and found wanting because it has been found difficult and not tried.
Do you want to go away as well?
What does Being a DIE HARD football fan look like:
Follow the team IN SEASON AND OUT
they come preseason and in season hoping for the post season
they know the players, they know the methodology of the team, they where the colors
Many have it tattoo’d on them
Jesus ask the 12 this
John 6:67 ESV
67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?”
what is He asking
and remember vs. 64 --- Jesus already knew who
Do you want to go away as well?
Jesus knew they hearts but He wanted them to voice it.
Romans 10:9 “9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Confess with your mouth
Do you want to go away as well?
IT WAS THE TRUE DISCIPLES COME TO JESUS MOMENT
Do you want to go away as well?
The ALL IN Fan
Follows in spite of difficulty
Losing or winning they are still loyal
They are full of hope
They start the season with anticipation
they Season record starts with 0 wins and 0 loses for every team.
As Diehard Christians we FOLLOW NO MATTER WHAT
All in Christians
They study in the preseason to be fully prepared for the season, so that they are in the post season
They know the enemies ways and can identify them
Mainly they know the WORD, can recite it and use it to teach, correct, encourage and rebuke
they know Jesus and model Jesus
they exhibit the Fruit of the Spirit.
Following Jesus is Hard
and you must make a choice
Jesus is not a vending machine or a gumball machine
He is a way of life,
to die to the old and live in the NEW
look at Peters WORDS
John 6:67–69 ESV
67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”
At the end of the rope
we will try everything to cling to life
WHERE WOULD WE GO
i don’t know of another way
DO YOU?
Jesus is that Life.
many people want to have a CASUAL Experience with Jesus
they want the things that they don’t want to disappear
and the things that they DO WANT to manifest.
They seek
alcohol
power
drugs
sex
Mediation
Positive thinking
the seek the supernatural in herbs, crystal, astrology charts
We are surrounded by a “Throw away” society
not much is made to last.
We lease cars so we can give them back.
We use disposable bags
we are surrounded by
“if i don’t like it I can find something else”
our retail system is based on
people that have to have the NEWEST and will pay for it
people that want the DEAL. Buy the unwanted things that the first group didn’t buy and we want it 50-70% off
Quality is not as important as you BUYING another one in a few years
It is HARD TO BE A CHRISTIAN TODAY
we see the WORDS of JESUS
and we SEE the LIFE in our WORLD
and we must CHOSE
That is the challenge of the “Followers”
it got hard and they ran.
in our church today we have
concerts Sunday morning, coffee bars, car shows, Saturday night services so you can sleep in
We have a massive attendance in the ATTRACTION CHURCH
it is not solely the church leadership
it is the people who are struggling TODAY with the BREAD of LIFE sermon
and sadly have never read or heard of it.
yet they are Christian they go to church every few weeks.
it is not the GOING
it is the GROWING
Following Jesus is Hard.
We have churches all around us that
teach the PURE WORD of GOD, with out the Worldly fan fare
It is hard to follow Jesus
The closer i walk the harder it is to live the life
Why?
because it starts out like an easy walk,
you are new, learning, without understanding,
you change a few things and enjoy your new church
THEN IT GETS HARD
the hills and mountains come, the rain storms and the wind
you now have heard the truth and must decide to OBEY IT
You must sacrifice your wants, needs, desires, and adopt HIS WAY
You must TRUST WITH OUT SEEING
Hebrews 11:1 ESV
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
The Truth that we MUST DECIDE to ACCEPT
is
John 6:70 ESV
70 Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.”
Jesus pursued you
and once you started to follow HIM
Believe and Become
You must BECOME
You must transform
You must be in Christ.
The burden of a changed life is reward with
a blessed perfect life with God in Heaven.
