Psalm 19-21
C.S. Lewis wrote, ‘I take this to be the greatest poem in the Psalter and one of the greatest lyrics in the world.’”
Psalm 19:title–4a
Now the first thing that comes to your mind is what? Gen 1, Romans 1?
Their line, measuring line, their speech determines their stand. God measures us by a straight line and tells us that line.
Psalm 19:4b–6
tabernacle for the sun is night.
nothing hidden from heat - definitely an issue in arid desert area. the sun is eager, always in your face, “the winner” it is dependable.
Psalm 50:3 “Our God shall come, and shall not keep silent; A fire shall devour before Him, And it shall be very tempestuous all around Him.” The light destroys the dark.
Psalm 19:7–11
The law begins it change inwardly. When we live it out, we are wise from simple (1Co 1:27). Psalm 119:130 “The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.” Romans 7:12 “Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.”
When we really see the Law as intended, we see why it is to be written on our hearts. Paul explains in Romans 2:14–16 “for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, 15who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them) 16in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.”
you ever get a gift of gold? pretty nice. Now what if you like honey having it directly off the comb is the grail for sweet people, but listen who kept them all? Who was the perfect obeyer of the law? What a great reward we got from His obedience.
Psalm 19:12–14
Wanna know where you might be morally wrong? Look at the law. And we have this perfectly and permanently with Christ, but we experience it with every event of repentance. Psalm 51:1–2 “Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions. 2Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin.”
presumptuous sins - insolent, “hot” wrong behavior. Usually anger, strong emotion. Its why he says don't let them rule over me. Even more so under grace! Romans 6:12–14 “Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.”
Have you ever sang v14? Lets sing it.
His Salvation
Psalm 20:title–3
We have our sacrifice in Christ and what Paul said, we are to give ourselves as a living Sacrifice. He remembers it.
The same offer still remains for Israel.
Psalm 20:4–5
A heart that seeks God will be fulfilled by the Lord
Psalm 20:6
saves his messiah. Saves us in Him.
Psalm 20:7–8
Isaiah 31:1 “Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, And rely on horses, Who trust in chariots because they are many, And in horsemen because they are very strong, But who do not look to the Holy One of Israel, Nor seek the LORD!”
Gods name is His reputation, nature and character. There is no other we can trust.
Psalm 20:9
save not deliver. Do not remove us from the world but remove the world from us. Our trust isnt in things. Though many times david used the word as deliverance, we know it isn’t always that.
Hoo-man! Joel 2:32 “And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the Lord Shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance, As the Lord has said, Among the remnant whom the Lord calls.” Romans 10:13 “For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.””
Joy in the Lord
Psalm 21:1–2
When our heart is right, we see right things. And God responds. David knew this intimately
Psalm 21:3–7
Through faith (trust) in Yahweh, we cannot be moved. Jeremiah 17:8 “For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit.” David truly trusted after Yahweh.
Psalm 21:8–12
God does punish for sin.
and because of this, we can celebrate
Psalm 21:13
We see in Him one who promises and can deliver.
