The passages have in common that more important than outward actions, which are still valuable, is the inward motivation and knowledge of God. The former should flow from the latter and the former should reflect the latter. Then all will indeed be well.

Title

One Thing is Needful: hearing, trusting, obeying God

Outline

What was wrong with Martha?

The answer is, in a sense, Nothing. We will discover in John chapter 11 that she had a deep and robust faith. Here she, probably the elder, sees a need to offer hospitality and goes about it. Her problem is that she is concerned about Mary, who is deepening her knowledge of and trust in Jesus. John chapter 11 will show that she needs this. Martha was doing right, but judging wrong.
Likewise the women calling out to Jesus. They judged Mary blessed for bearing and nursing Jesus, but Jesus goes deeper: she did indeed do those acts, but she is really blessed because she heard the word and did it, i.e. her “here is the handmaid of the Lord.”

This principle runs through scripture:

Your attitude, especially attitude towards God, in what you do is more significant than what you do, although it is important to do right.
So you giving “sparingly” or “abundantly” or “reluctantly” or “cheerfully” are important, but on the deeper level they show how much you trust God and his promise of provision or whether you really think you are the source of your own security?
In Hebrews the priests did not go into the inner tent because they knew God was there and one entered his presence only after proper sacrificial preparation, which now has been done once for all. King Uzziah thought he was important enough to enter and burn incense and he ended up a leper.
In Luke why does one “love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return”? Because you know “your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.” You know what God is like and that his approval of certain behaviors makes the risks negligible in the long run.

Brothers and sisters, the one thing needed is knowing God, striving to be like him, and following his instruction

It may not be practical in this age. It may not be financially rewarding. We might not understand it. But if we understand him and trust him and act on that understanding and trust, “all will be well, every manner of thing will be well” and we will find the divinization and union with Him that we desire above all else, as the Theotokos herself did.

Byzantine Lectionary (Julian) 10-8-2023: Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost

EPISTLE

2 Corinthians 9:6–11

6 The point is this: he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work. 9 As it is written,

“He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor;

his righteousness endures for ever.”

10 He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your resources and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way for great generosity, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God;

Byzantine Lectionary (Julian) 11-10-2023: The Protection of the Theotokos

EPISTLE

Hebrews 9:1–7

1 Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary. 2 For a tent was prepared, the outer one, in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the Presence; it is called the Holy Place. 3 Behind the second curtain stood a tent called the Holy of Holies, 4 having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, which contained a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; 5 above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail.

6 These preparations having thus been made, the priests go continually into the outer tent, performing their ritual duties; 7 but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood which he offers for himself and for the errors of the people.

GOSPEL

Luke 6:31–36

31 And as you wish that men would do to you, do so to them.

32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. 36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

GOSPEL

Luke 10:38–42, 11:27, 28

38 Now as they went on their way, he entered a village; and a woman named Martha received him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving; and she went to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; 42 one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her.”

27 As he said this, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that you sucked!”

28 But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”
