DEFINE INCARNATE- God in Flesh.
God Took on Flesh V.14
Verse 14 could be a whole sermon in of itself! God has provided so much truth in this verse lets look.
14 A- the word became flesh.
Who is the Word? Jesus. God the Son. What did he do?
Became flesh. Flesh is not a bad thing, normally we think of flesh and sin. But the translation here is “man’s physical being.”
Did Jesus begin to exist at that point. No, has always been. Look back at verse 1.
Exalting Jesus in John The Gospel Embodied in Jesus (John 1:14a)

Some have suggested the Word (Jesus Christ) came to dwell in a man. He did not himself become a man. But John says, “The Word became flesh.”

• Others have said Jesus Christ just appeared like a man. He didn’t actually take on human form and become a man. He must have been an apparition because it’s impossible for God who is Spirit to take on bodily form. While it’s difficult for us to understand how this could happen, we can understand what John writes—“The Word became flesh.”

• Still others have suggested God simply chose a man and made him his Son. But this ignores what John wrote earlier. The same one who became flesh (v. 14) is also the one who was in the beginning with God, who was with God, and who was God (v. 1).

At a definite point in human history we know that the boundless God, entered into time at a definite point in flesh. The purpose behind Jesus doing this was necessary for him to be an example to us of how to live.
To show us that we can overcome temptation
But most importantly if Jesus did not take on flesh, he would not have been the perfect sacrifice for us.
Exalting Jesus in John If Jesus Did Not Become a Man, He Could Not Die

The incarnation is amazing because of why God became man: so he could die for our sin. He renounced the glory due him, becoming poor, so that through his poverty we might become rich.

Colossians 1:15 “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.”
Jesus when he began at a definite time as fully human, he never ceased to be fully God. In the womb he was fully man and fully God. As a baby he was fully man and fully God. As a teenager he was fully man and fully God. As an adult he was fully man and fully God. Even now, as Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father Jesus is fully man, and fully God
Jesus is the mediator between us and God the Father. Remember the bridge illustration for salvation.
1 Timothy 2:5 “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,”
Jesus became flesh to be truly human, he is the incarnation, God incorporated flesh. He is still fully man and fully God… Wut
Different religions will not accept this.
Muslims believe in Jesus. They believe that Jesus is man, but do not believe that He is God. They reject the Trinity, they believe in Allah and his oneness.
Judaism will not take Jesus as the Messiah.
Old Testament prophecy.
Jesus is the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies to show he is God. Isaiah 52:13- 53:12.
The entirety of this passage shows that God is sending a servant, one of whom will save the World from their sin? Who is that? Jesus. Look at 53:10-12. And back at 52:13-15.
But wait, there is more!
Look at the bulls eye from I don’t have enough faith to be an Atheist. pages 334-336.
Who is from the seed of a woman? Gen 3:15. Matt. 1:23.
From the seed of Abraham? Gen. 12:3. Gal. 3:16.
IS from the tribe of Judah? Gen. 49:10.
From the Line of David. Jeremiah 23:5-6.
Was God and Man Isaiah 9:6-7.
Born in Bethlehem Micah 5:2.
Was preceded by a messenger and visited temple. Malachi 3:1.
Dies. Daniel 9:25-26.
Rose from the dead. Isaiah 53:11.
All of these point to one person, and can only be fulfilled by one being ever. That is the Word, he is God and he is man. And he comes to us as Jesus.
God Dwelt Among Us. 14 B
The infinite God man Jesus, came down from Heaven, and dwelt among us. When Jesus came in time and dwelt, that is a term for pitching a tent.
What does the NIV say? “And made his dwelling among us.”
Where did God live in the Old Testament?
John is trying to remind the reader of the times of the Old Testament.
Exodus 25:8–9 “And let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst. Exactly as I show you concerning the pattern of the tabernacle, and of all its furniture, so you shall make it.”
John is showing that God has come to be with his creation. But he is no longer using a means of a tent or tabernacle. (A place where God dwelled) Rather that God had been amongst them by taking on flesh!!!!!!
John is portraying that Jesus was living, breathing and doing all the things of any created being would be doing. It was not just an appearance and leave, he lived with all of humanity of the time.
Philippians 2:7 “but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.”
Hebrews 2:14 “Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,”
Hebrews 2:17 “Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.”
How can someone who is fully God and Holy, be in the midst of sinners?
Exodus 33:18–23 “Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.” And the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.”
Moses could only see the backside of God?
What did he look like after?
Exodus 34:29–30 “When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him.”
Why does it matter that Jesus dwelt among his people?
He gave us an example to follow.
Show that we can refuse sin
He was our first Counselor/helper
John 14:16–17 “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.”
Jesus was our physical example of how to live and overcome sin. How to live for God and give him glory.
God is glorious, gracious, and the Truth. 14 C “And we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Was does glory mean? We use that term potentially all the time.
Man frosty freeze is glorious. Chickfila is GLORY… we use the term nonchalantly. But what does it really mean?- Telling people about it. How good, how tasty
Psalm 19:1 “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.”
Angles speaking to one another. Isaiah 6:3 “And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!””
“What is it? I believe the glory of God is the going public of his infinite worth. I define the holiness of God as the infinite value of God, the infinite intrinsic worth of God. And when that goes public in creation, the heavens are telling the glory of God, and human beings are manifesting his glory, because we're created in his image, and we're trusting his promises so that we make him look gloriously trustworthy.”- Piper
Grace?- Getting what you don’t deserve.
Here is a way to think of grace.
‌STATS ON GRACE
How many gallons of water are in the ocean?
Answer: 3.612 x 10²º gallons of sea water in the ocean. That is 3.612 x 1 with 21 zeros.
How many stars are in the known universe?
Answer: 70 sextillion (7 followed by 22 zeros) was calculated by a team of stargazers based at the Australian National University.
How many grains of sand are in the world?
Answer: 7,500,000,000,000,000,000, or seven quintillion five hundred quadrillion grains of sand.
Even if these answers are incorrect, here is my point: God’s grace is bigger than all these numbers!
Undeserved favor
Romans 3:24 “and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,”
Romans 5:15 “But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.”
Romans 11:5–6 “So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace. But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.”
Truth? Remember objective and subjective.
John 14:6 “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Application
God is real, he left a boundless heaven, and bound himself for us. He wants us to have a relationship with him.
Experience his grace. Salvation.

Confess
If Jesus is Lord of your life, rest in him. He knows and understands your struggle.
Psalm 23 “A Psalm of David. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
