I Timothy 1:3-15
Timothy is Paul’s response to bad teaching. the constant refrain of church apostles was the warning of wolves creeping in. it safe to say that by the time Paul is winding down his ministry the creeping teachers have started to make an impact.
How do you determine the value of a path. - By whether or not it is taking you to your destination.
We should expect that in the spiritual life there is value based on whether or not your philosophy and way of thinking is taking you in the direction you should go.
I. Look at the approved path.
1 Timothy 1:5 KJV 1900
Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:
In our text we note "Two Kinds Of Teaching"...
There is that which causes disputes
There is that which produces godly edification
What makes the difference? This question should concern...
All those who teach or preach God's Word
All Christians, who as students by their personal study or comments in classes:
Can contribute to the rise of disputes
Or develop thoughts which result in godly edification
[Let's note the difference between the two, beginning with...]
WHEN IT IS BASED ON FAITH...
Godly edification is that "which is in faith" - 1Ti 1:4Of course, faith comes from the Word of God - Ro 10:17
Godly teaching that edifies (builds up) comes from God's Word We must let the Word of God be the basis of our thoughts and comments
WHEN IT SEEKS TO PRODUCE LOVE...
Paul wrote "the purpose of the commandment is love" - 1Ti 1:5
A love for truth certainlyBut also a love for God and man! - cf. 1Jn 4:20-21The desire should not be to just win arguments
Our approach will therefore be different - 2Ti 2:24-25Because we are trying to win souls from the snare of Satan! - 2Ti 2:26
WHEN IT SEEKS TO CREATE A PURE HEART...
Paul wrote that our goal should be love "from a pure heart" - 1Ti 1:5The goals of our teaching and study must be pure and not defiled by:
Trying to show how clever we areSeeking to show what great debaters we areWanting to embarrass the ignorance of our opponentsOur desire must be pure, seeking to lead people closer to God
WHEN IT SEEKS TO DEVELOP A GOOD CONSCIENCE...
THE END of the commandment. That commandment that comes from God and is meant to be for the good of his people. It is not a new commandment it is that good and holy LAW.
When I say the great command what is the command that comes to mind?
Jesus helps us with this command doesn’t he.
Matthew 22:36–40 KJV 1900
Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
You are commanded to love God with all your heart.
You are commanded to love your Neighbor.
You know that you are putting God first and loving your neighbor because the end result will be
Charity out of a pure heart
A life that leaves you with a good conscience
A genuine faith.
When I love God with all my heart and see to it to love my neigbors. I find that the end result of that life is marked by Faith, Love and Holiness.
This is not a new thing to Paul.
1 Thessalonians 1:3 KJV 1900
Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;
1 Thessalonians 1:7 KJV 1900
So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia.
1 Corinthians 13:13 KJV 1900
And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
But this is not new to Scripture
Micah 6:8 KJV 1900
He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; And what doth the Lord require of thee, But to do justly, and to love mercy, And to walk humbly with thy God?
Paul is simply pointing out that the end result of someone loves God and Others will develop a Supernatural life of Faith, Hope and Love.
I won’t take time tonight to tell you what I have spent many hours teaching this church.
Paul is helping us understand that if I approach my life as an oppotunity to love God and love others I will develop the qualities. Of Following and Knowing Him, Living a life of regular cleansing of attitudes, actions and thoughts from my life, and acting out a sacrificial love for others.
II. Let me Show you the Wrong Path.
This is one that false teachers take you down.
1 Timothy 1:6 KJV 1900
From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;
These people that have two characteristics:
They’ve never seen the end of their teaching.
They don’t realize what their affirmation will do.
They don’t know the right direction they don’t know the end of their plan.
The problem is that we have a lot of voices in our culture today. The major flaw of social media is that it gives a voice to the worst parts of our culture. In the past we had absolute fools it was easier to ignore them. But they will trip God’s people up.
They trick with
Smooth Words
There is a “Christian” culture out there that will tell you that you live in an age of Grace and God doesn’t care about how you live so long as you just believe. Hey and that is a popular notion this idea that Jesus saved you to stay and never give up more of yourself or live different than the world around you. The principles of distinction are verses they ignore. I’m not talking about out there some where you will have that foolishness here in this church just konw that those smooth words will not produce life.
Scandalous Words
This teacher comes with the same message as satan to Eve “Hath God says.” God never says you have to dress a certain way or abstain from sin, or foolisheness. This is backwards from the intention of Scriptures transformation.
Scholastic Words
I can here it now There are many Christians today that want to fill your head, but care little of our obedience. They can argue and entertain their mental capacity that they never have to follow God. Just a bunch of Egg heads for Jesus. We know enough of hte BIble to excuse our disobedience.
Socratic Words
Philosophy is a perinial issue. each generation has some philosopher to cast enough doubt on Scripture to get you to pull up your anchor and set you adrift.
Social Words
We find that our modern cancel culture the thing that we are to be concerned about is that we might offend someone with what we believe. You are a racist, facist, phobe of some kind because you have an opinion that is different than the masses.
This path is the One your flesh will take you down.
There are many of us that look at verse 9 and breathe a sigh of relief. If you arn’t lawless that you don’t need the law.
PHEW good I get one free.
1 Timothy 1:9–10 KJV 1900
Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
You don’t have any of that. You aren’t still following after the holiness of Christ. You aren’t brining your propensity to color bad and hurtful and negative things with words that convey the opposite. You don’t Instagram filter your life when you are describing or liying about the way thigns really are.
You don’t hold on to the hurts others cause you a little longer than you know you should because something about bitterness makes you feel like your in control.
You don’t neglect the worship of God for your own comfort or entertainment.
You don’t entertain lust even though you have promised God for the 1000th time that you never pick it up again.
Hey lets be real here you and I are the ones that need the Law. because we in our natural sinful state are lawless. and when we live our lives independent of God’s word we have set ourselves up for the destrctuion that our flesh is due.
Even Paul points out to us where he falls.
1 Timothy 1:13 KJV 1900
Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.
It is here that Paul begins to help us understand
How do I choose the right path. It is in recognizing that I am not to be trusted on this journey.
Paul the APOSTLE tells us that this one time sinner is now on the path that produces Faith Hope and Love but it was not because he was holding on to some teacher or holding on to his flesh but rather he agrees with the Gospel.
1 Timothy 1:11 KJV 1900
According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.
According to the Gospel the death burial and resurrection of Jesus has made a transformation in the lives of sinners.
Enabling us
1 Timothy 1:12 KJV 1900
And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;
Supplying Mercy
1 Timothy 1:13 KJV 1900
Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.
Applying Grace
1 tim 1.14
1 Timothy 1:14 KJV 1900
And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
You see the God pleasing faith hope and love come as a by product of a life that doesn’t see itself as in the light of teachers or his own opinion but looks at himself in accordance to the Gospel.
And he sees himself as vs 15 requires.
1 Timothy 1:15 KJV 1900
This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
The thing is that God wants us to have His word applied to us daily
Application
Whose voice has the greater hearing in your life?
Some teacher that has an agenda to teach
Maybe its your flesh
Or is it the Gospel that keeps us dependent on a risen savior.
