Matthew 26:69–75 NASB95
69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.” 71 When he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” 72 And again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man.” 73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Surely you too are one of them; for even the way you talk gives you away.” 74 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, “Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.
Matthew 10:32 NASB95
32 “Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven.
Mark 8:38 NASB95
38 “For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

I. Fan the Fire

2 Timothy 1:6 NASB95
6 For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
Because of your sincere faith…I remind you...
remind continually and actively (Present active Ind.)
Remind us about what? The gift of God = the grace gift that was given to Timothy at his commissioning service.
1 Timothy 4:14 NASB95
14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery.
We each have a gift given to us by God.
Romans 12:6–8 NASB95
6 Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; 7 if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; 8 or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.
You may not know what your gift is. What are drawn to do? What motivates you or energizes you to minister for Jesus Christ?
preaching - then preach
giving - as you give it will give glory to God
mercy - help brethren who are hurting and draw people to Jesus
serving - minister to each other and people will see the love of Jesus.
Paul was a preacher, apostle and teacher
2 Timothy 1:11 NASB95
11 for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle and a teacher.
John 13:35 NASB95
35 “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
fan the flame!
We had at least 2 smoke alarms go off within a few days of each other. Why? because I just left them alone and their batteries died. I’m supposed to test the alarm weekly to make sure the battery still has ample power. If it doesn’t, I can replace it with a fresh battery.

II. Identify the Spirit

2 Timothy 1:7 NASB95
7 For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.

A. Spirit of Cowardice

has not given - a spirit of fear does not come from God. spirit means wind. Like wind, it is the unseen force of a person that can be identified by its effect.
If you see actions for Jesus that are cowardly or controlled by fear, you can be sure that it is not produced by a person under the power of the Holy Spirit.
If you back down from sharing a Bible verse with someone because you are afraid of what they might think of you.
[A friend tells you an inappropriate joke with sexual innuendo, how do you respond? Do nervously laugh so that they won’t think your weird instead of speaking up and telling them, “that’s inappropriate. The Bible says, “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.” (Philippians 4:8, NASB95) and
Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.” (Ephesians 4:29, NASB95)
Then you know it is not the Spirit of God who is in control.

B. Spirit of Boldness

1. Power

δύναμις, power = Dynamic energy that produces results.
non-human power.
Ephesians 3:20 NASB95
20 Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us,

2. Love

Love - sacrificial care that actively pursues the other person’s best interest.
non-human love.
1 Corinthians 13:4–6 NASB95
4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;
Love for God and love for people.
John 15:13 NASB95
13 “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.

3. Self Control

Organized to be efficient for Jesus Christ. Moderating yourself for the cause of Christ.
non-human self control.
