Death and taxes.

Intro: Chapter 17 begins with the transfiguration of Jesus which Peter, James and John were with Him. When they come back down from the mountain, the other disciples could not cast out a demon from a young boy. Jesus casts out the demon and then admonishes the disciples for their lack of faith. They travel back through Galilee to Capernaum. This is Jesus’s final tour through Galilee as He is on His way to Jerusalem for the final time.
Matthew 17:22 KJV
22 And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:
Matthew 17:23 KJV
23 And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.
Mark 9:30 KJV
30 And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it.
Mark 9:31 KJV

If they had fully understood what was going to happen, they may have tried to protect Jesus.
Then, just as now, they did not understand the need for Jesus to make the atonement for our sins. Many people believe their good out weighs their bad. They are
The death of the Messiah was prophesied in Is 53. God is the one that delivered Jesus to His enemies.
Matthew 17:24 KJV
24 And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?
Not Roman tax collectors like Matthew was. Commentators understand this to be a Jewish tax for the upkeep of the temple. Ex 30:11-16. Neh 10:32.
Matthew 17:25 KJV
25 He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?
Prevented = Ask him. Jesus was aware of Peter’s conversation.
Matthew 17:26 KJV
26 Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.
Matthew 17:27 KJV
27 Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.
