We continue the journey through the book of Romans.
To jog your memory last week we looked at Romans 6:1-11 and saw that in Christ we identify with His Death, Resurrection and Glorification through baptism.
Baptism is so much more than kids dunking each other in the water.
We have transferred from the Kingdom of Sin to the Kingdom of Grace
(Slide)
Our faith in Jesus means we stand on resurrected ground
Amy and I were licensed foster parents. We got the phone call that they had a 2 week old baby that would be entering adoption but they needed a foster home for him before the adoption.
We said yes.
We were excited as the case worker brought him to the house.
He was there in the carrier
She gave us all the instructions and a few supplies
She asked if we needed anything
Then she left
I will never forget the look on Amy’s face after I came back from shutting the door for the lady to leave.
It was a look of shock and realization that her and I were alone and expected to keep this baby alive without any help from anyone else.
It was a what do we do next look.
We kept him from 2 weeks to 2 months and he was adopted and in that time Amy was pregnant with Macy.
As we continue in Romans 6 I think it is one of those moments. It’s the picture of coming out of the baptismal waters, standing on resurrected ground and that look of ok what do we do next?!?
Romans 6 answers this question.
Romans 6:12 HCSB
12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, so that you obey its desires.
(Circle Therefore) Because you have been buried, raised and glorified in Christ then here is what is next. So if you are here this week and you missed last week. Hit the pause button and go watch last week. (Jim and Mary in their small group was talking about how nice it would be if you could live pause this message and go back haha)
Because of all the truths in verses 1-11 then and he gives this instruction
Do not let sin reign
I like exploring this word reign
What does it mean to not let sin reign in your mortal body?
Reign
be a king, reign as a king ; control completely
Romans 6:12 HCSB
12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, so that you obey its desires.
Don’t let sin be king or completely control your mortal body
so that
You obey its evil desires
What do you do with the idea of a King? You obey the kings orders.
When sin is in complete control you obey its orders.
Romans 6:13 HCSB
13 And do not offer any parts of it to sin as weapons for unrighteousness. But as those who are alive from the dead, offer yourselves to God, and all the parts of yourselves to God as weapons for righteousness.
Do not offer any part of your mortal body to sin
as
weapons of unrighteousness (big word for not living rightly failure to follow the law, commands, or moral principles)
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Five: Dying to Live (Romans 6)

David’s eyes looked on his neighbor’s wife; his mind plotted a wicked scheme; his hand signed a cowardly order for the woman’s husband to be killed.

As those who are alive from the dead
Offer your whole selves to God
and
all the parts of yourselves to God
as
Weapons of righteousness
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Five: Dying to Live (Romans 6)

God used the rod in Moses’ hand and conquered Egypt. He used the sling in David’s hand to defeat the Philistines. He used the mouths and tongues of the prophets. Paul’s dedicated feet carried him from city to city as he proclaimed the Gospel. The Apostle John’s eyes saw visions of the future, his ears heard God’s message, and his fingers wrote it all down in a book that we can read.

“If I raised half has much heaven as I did hell before I knew Jesus, then what a world I would be living in”
Think about using your hands for right living
Think about using your mind for Glorifying the Lord
Think about using your feet for seeking Jesus always
What about if with your tongue it was focused solely on being a weapon of righteousness.
I am going to use it to build others up, speak the truth, bring affirmation, proclaim scripture, share the Gospel.
Romans 6:14 HCSB
14 For sin will not rule over you, because you are not under law but under grace.
Sin will not rule over you
To rule that is to be your master or dominate
because
You are not under law but under grace
The Law causes Sin to tightens its grip on you. Grace sets you free to live.
The difference of living with a bunch of do nots and living please the Lord.
Romans 6:15 HCSB
15 What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Absolutely not!
Verse 1 and this verse and the response is absolutely NOT
Romans 6:16–18 HCSB
16 Don’t you know that if you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of that one you obey —either of sin leading to death or of obedience leading to righteousness? 17 But thank God that, although you used to be slaves of sin, you obeyed from the heart that pattern of teaching you were transferred to, 18 and having been liberated from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness.
He uses the idea of slavery as a human analogy because this language was familiar to them.
If you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey
2 options
Slave to sin = Leading to death
Obedience = Leading to Righteousness
v. 17 But thank God that
You were slaves of sin (you raised hell or brokenness)
You were Transferred to
In the transfer you was liberated from sin
Enslaved to Righteousness
The New testament commentary highlights that as a slave you are released from slavery when you die. At death, you master no longer has authority over you.
What is the picture earlier of baptism? In Christ, we have died with Him. Death no longer rules over Him v.8
What happens next video? What happens next after baptism?
You are now enslaved to righteousness. You start to fixate on living in obedience to Jesus. You want to do things that please and honor Jesus. The old master is gone and you have been transferred to a new master who loves you so much he died in your place.
You have been transferred from the service of sin into the service of God; your business now is to do what pleases God and no longer what sin dictates.
Sin wants us to hang on and do what pleases Sin
Today’s scripture is we are set from from sin. We now do what pleases God.
We seek to do what pleases God in our employment
Seek to do what pleases God in our family
Seek to do what pleases God in our parenting
Seek to do what pleases God in our homes
Seek to do what pleases God in our friend groups
Seek to do what pleases God in our finances
Seek to do what pleases God in school
Romans 6:19 HCSB
19 I am using a human analogy because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you offered the parts of yourselves as slaves to moral impurity, and to greater and greater lawlessness, so now offer them as slaves to righteousness, which results in sanctification.
Sanctification or Holiness
The act of becoming more personally dedicated to God; especially by becoming more distinct, devoted, or morally pure.
Romans 6:20–22 HCSB
20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free from allegiance to righteousness. 21 So what fruit was produced then from the things you are now ashamed of? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now, since you have been liberated from sin and have become enslaved to God, you have your fruit, which results in sanctification —and the end is eternal life!
Galatians 5:22–23 HCSB
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Bible Project quote: “It’s when believers accept their identity as Jesus-like humans, that they are liberated to become the whole-hearted humans who can truly love God and their neighbor.
Student on the bus says to me...
When I go to church I stay out of trouble, but when I don’t go to church I get in a whole lot more trouble
Romans 6:23 HCSB
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Gift χάρισμα (charisma)

something graciously given; a gift. Something that is freely given on account of favor and kindness.

Romans 6:23 HCSB
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
