The psalms are such a comfort. Joe Focht told of a conversation he had with Chuck Smith about how when he was greatly troubled he would go to the psalms and after reading would be inspired how to pray. Lots of prayers in the Psalms. We left off with Psalm 11:7 “For the Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness; His countenance beholds the upright.” and now we go into;
Psalm 12
a generation is all it takes for the faith to cease.
gossip is deadly. Proverbs 20:19 “He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets; Therefore do not associate with one who flatters with his lips.” Proverbs 29:5 “A man who flatters his neighbor Spreads a net for his feet.”
Romans 16:18 “For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple.”
2 Peter 2:18 “For when they speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who have actually escaped from those who live in error.”
Proverbs 18:21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.”
The difference with God and us is everything He says is “pure” and for us, 2 Samuel 22:31 “As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him.”
If we walk in Him, we will do as he says, Deuteronomy 33:3 “Yes, He loves the people; All His saints are in Your hand; They sit down at Your feet; Everyone receives Your words.” John 14:15 ““If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
in this next section 1-4 is the prayer, 5,6 are the praise.
Psalm 13
Now this section seems to be about a physical current and this world salvation. Notice the fix this before I die and my enemy has reason to mock or curse you.
Have trusted. Again, we are a faith built on tenses. Here we see a trust (even though the prayer seems to indicate a desire to be fulfilled) and the knowledge that no matter what, the Lord saves.
I trust because I know how He deals with me? I know his blessings in where I am. Remembering all good things are from Him.
Psalm 14:title–7 NKJV
To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. 1 The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, They have done abominable works, There is none who does good. 2 The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children of men, To see if there are any who understand, who seek God. 3 They have all turned aside, They have together become corrupt; There is none who does good, No, not one. 4 Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge, Who eat up my people as they eat bread, And do not call on the Lord? 5 There they are in great fear, For God is with the generation of the righteous. 6 You shame the counsel of the poor, But the Lord is his refuge. 7 Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion! When the Lord brings back the captivity of His people, Let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad.
ok, context, who is the subject of the chapter? The fool. He is called a fool why? Rejects yahweh.
who is the “They” of v1? Fools who reject God?
Now v2 seems to say none are “good” because references Children Of Men.
v7 Paul says quoting from the sin of Balaam, that proud talk is enticing in Romans 11:25–27 “For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. 26And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; 27For this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins.””
Ps 15 shows us what the life of someone living for God is like
Psalm 15:title–5 NKJV
A Psalm of David. 1 Lord, who may abide in Your tabernacle? Who may dwell in Your holy hill? 2 He who walks uprightly, And works righteousness, And speaks the truth in his heart; 3 He who does not backbite with his tongue, Nor does evil to his neighbor, Nor does he take up a reproach against his friend; 4 In whose eyes a vile person is despised, But he honors those who fear the Lord; He who swears to his own hurt and does not change; 5 He who does not put out his money at usury, Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be moved.
I would wish it would be positive rather than negative. But i also get it. Its easy for us to take advantage, to get what we can for ourselves. v1-2 are mostly from positive.
our very life is focused and centered and springs from Christ Himself! John 15:1–4 ““I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.”
Whats missing from these short Psalms? Selah. No pause or interlude or the like.
