John 8:12 KJV 1900
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
1 Peter 2:9 KJV 1900
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

I. Introduction

A. Briefly introduce the concept of light as a metaphor for God's presence (Exodus 13:21, John 8:12), wisdom (Proverbs 4:18), and guidance (Psalm 119:105).

B. Mention that just as God spoke light into existence during creation, He can illuminate our lives.

II. The Darkness of Creation

Genesis 1:1–3 KJV 1900
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

A. Discuss the state of the world before God spoke light into existence: "without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep."

B. Draw parallels between the formless, void world and a life without God—dark and empty.

III. The First Light

Genesis 1:3 KJV 1900
And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

A. Explain how God spoke light into existence: "And God said, Let there be light: and there was light."

B. Emphasize the power of God's Word to bring light into darkness, both in creation and in our lives.

IV. The Light of the World

John 8:12 KJV 1900
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

A. Introduce Jesus as the Light of the World.

B. Discuss how following Jesus removes us from spiritual darkness: "he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."

V. The Word as a Lamp

Psalm 119:105 KJV 1900
NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, And a light unto my path.

A. Discuss how God's Word serves as a guide in our lives: "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."

B. Explain the importance of the Word in our daily walk with God.

VI. Transformation Through Light

Ephesians 5:8–9 KJV 1900
For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
1 John 1:7 KJV 1900
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

A. Discuss the transformative power of walking in God's light.

B. Explain how the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin when we walk in the light.

VII. Becoming the Light

Matthew 5:14–16 KJV 1900
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

A. Discuss our role as the light of the world once we have been illuminated by God.

B. Emphasize the importance of letting our light shine so others can glorify God.

VIII. The Command to Shine

Isaiah 60:1–2 KJV 1900
Arise, shine; for thy light is come, And the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, And gross darkness the people: But the Lord shall arise upon thee, And his glory shall be seen upon thee.

A. Encourage the congregation to arise and shine, for their light has come.

B. Discuss how, in a world covered in darkness, the light of God's people is more crucial than ever.

IX. Conclusion

A. Summarize the journey from darkness to light, both in the creation story and in our spiritual lives.

B. Call to action: Encourage the congregation to seek God's Word and let their light shine in the world.
