1. I must Accept the Bible as the Word of God
a. David believed the Bible to be the words of God
i. Calls it God’s Law (1)
ii. His testimonies (2)
iii. His ways (3)
iv. Thy precepts (4)
v. Thy statutes (5)
vi. Thy commandments (6)
vii. Thy righteous judgments (7)
b. David believed that the Bible was:
i. Verbally inspired (Ps. 119:13) … all the ordinances of Thy mouth.
ii. Inerrant (Ps. 119:128) Therefore I esteem right all Thy precepts concerning everything…
iii. Absolutely trustworthy (Ps. 119:86) All Thy commandments are faithful:
c. David responded to the Word of God just as he would to God Himself
i. Respect (6) … I have respect unto all Thy commandments
ii. Trust (42) … for I trust in Thy word
iii. Seeking (45) … for I seek your precepts
iv. Love (47) I shall delight in Thy commandments, which I love
v. Hope (81) … I have put my hope in your word
2. I must Approach the Bible as my authority for life
a. Law – rule of conduct (34) … I may observe Thy law, and keep it with all my heart.
b. Testimonies – declarations of God’s will (22) Remove from me reproach and contempt for I have kept Thy testimonies.
c. Way – the pattern of life marked out for God’s people (37) Turn away my eyes from looking at vanity, and revive me in Thy ways.
d. Precepts – directions/instructions for actions (40) Behold I have longed for Thy precepts.
e. Statutes – Literally means “things inscribed” written laws (16) I will delight myself in Thy statutes, I shall not forget Thy word.
f. Commandments – authoritative directives (21) Thou dost rebuke the arrogant, the cursed who wander from Thy commandments.
g. Judgments – legally binding judicial decisions (7) I shall give thanks to Thee with uprightness of heart when I learn Thy righteous judgments.
h. Word – sayings expressing God’s thoughts (28) My soul weeps because of grief, strengthen me according to Thy word.
i. Truth – absolutely reliable (43) Take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth for I have hoped in Thy judgments.
j. Ordinances – authoritative decrees (62) At midnight I shall rise to give thanks to Thee because of Thy righteous ordinances.
3. I must Acknowledge the purpose for which God gave the Bible.
a. It is a path to keep me straight (1) How blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord.
b. It is water to make me clean (9) How shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Thy word.
c. It is a song to make me joyful (54) Thy statutes are my songs…
d. It is the gold that leads to true riches (72) The law of Thy mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces
e. It is the food (dessert) that strengthens me (103) How sweet are Thy words to my taste, yes sweeter than honey to my mouth!
f. It is a light for the journey through life (105) Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
g. It is a heritage to be passed to the generations to follow (111) Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever, for they are the rejoicing of my heart.
4. I must Ask God’s help in understanding the Bible.
a. Be ready to learn (12) … teach me Thy statutes
b. Seek to understand (73) …give me understanding, that I may learn Thy commandments.
c. Open our eyes (18) Open my eyes that I may behold wonderful things from Thy law.
5. I must Act upon what the Bible says. Take action!
a. Walk (45) I will walk at liberty for I seek Thy precepts
b. Perform (106) I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep Thy righteous judgments.
c. Go (35) Make me go in the path of Thy commandments, for therein do I delight.
d. Do it now (60) I made haste and delayed not to keep Thy commandments.
