Introduction: The weight that we want to consider today can have either a positive or a negative effect on us.
It is a weight that we should sometimes carry but we have a tendency to either carry it too long or we don’t carry it long enough.
There are those who would say that there is never any reason to carry this weight and there are those who would like to see us take it with us to the grave.

**What is it?*

It is the weight of guilt.
Psalm 38:4 NIV My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear.
b.
A detective once told me that a murder would be solved only when guilt got the best of the suspect!
c.
There is good guilt and bad guilt
d.
Good guilt happens when we do bad things, feel bad about them, and take the appropriate actions to rectify the situation.
Some people seem to never experience this kind of guilt, even when they are Christians.
e.
Bad guilt is when I have already taken the appropriate actions and I still feel guilty and am held prisoner by that guilt.

**What is it doing in my pack?
Bad Guilt*

It keeps me from feeling forgiven.
b.
It makes me very susceptible to one of Satan’s favorite lies.
“You have got to be kidding, someone like you can never be used of the Lord”.

I use it as an excuse for not living for the Lord and not serving Him.
d.
It hinders my growth and walk with the Lord so I must rid myself of it!

**What should I do with it?*

a. Evaluate just what type of guilt it is.
i.
Do I feel guilty and need to deal with some situation in my life?
Chris coming to me many years after he was involved in a crime and wanting to make things right.
ii.
Should I not feel guilty and I do?
Many who have said to me “I have asked God for forgiveness but I still struggle with the guilt.
b.
I need to realize and deal with my sinfulness before God and man.
1 John 1:7-9 NLT But if we are living in the light of God’s presence, just as Christ is, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from every sin.
If we say we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and refusing to accept the truth.
But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong.
c.
I need to take God at His word.
Here is a sampling of what He has to say on the subject.
Isaiah 43:25 NIV “I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.
Romans 8:1 NASB95 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Micah 7:19 NCV You will have mercy on us again; you will conquer our sins.
You will throw away all our sins into the deepest part of the sea.
Psalm 103:12 NLT He has removed our rebellious acts as far away from us as the east is from the west.

I need to realize that when I refuse to forgive myself that I have taken a position that displeases God and thrills Satan.
A little boy visiting his grandparents was given his first slingshot.
He practiced in the woods, but he could never hit his target.
As he came back to Grandma’s backyard, he spied her pet duck.
On impulse he took aim and let fly.
The stone hit and the duck fell dead.
\\ The boy panicked.
Desperately he hid the dead duck in the woodpile, only to look up and see his sister Sally watching.
Sally had seen it all, but said nothing.
After lunch that day, Grandma said, "Sally, let’s wash the dishes."
But Sally said, "Johnny told me he wanted to help in the kitchen today.
Didn’t you, Johnny?"
She quickly whispered, "Remember the duck!"
So Johnny did the dishes.
\\ Later Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go fishing.
Grandma said, "I’m sorry, but I need Sally to help make supper."
Sally smiled and said, "That’s all taken care of.
Johnny wants to do it."
And again the whisper, "Remember the duck!" Johnny stayed while Sally
went fishing.
After several days of doing both his chores and Sally’s, he couldn’t stand it.
He confessed to Grandma that he killed the duck.
"I know, Johnny," she said, giving him a hug.
I saw the whole thing.
I was angry, but because I love you, I forgave you.
I was just wondering how long you would let Sally make a slave of you."
Conclusion: Has guilt made a slave out of you? God only wants it to bring us to the place where we make things right with Him so we can move forward in a loving and nurturing relationship with Him!
