Introduction: Last week, we discussed that Christ brings Christians near to God. Today, I want to discuss how Christ does this. Christ does this by being our peace. Christ is our peace. (Read vv. 14-16, expl. Two different people Gentiles and Jews [referred to as Circumcision])
Transition: Jesus Christ Himself, alone is our peace. But let’s first consider what ‘peace’ means.
What is peace? (Not a piece of pie; Getting along with one another; Ex. Choosing a movie; sharing toys)
Transition: Let’s now consider what is the opposite of peace.
What is the opposite of peace?
Fighting (ex. Movie - fighting over choice, because we didn’t get what we want)
Where does this come from? (Sin)
Our passage discusses sin by using the word enmity (Christ died on the cross for our sin).
What is it that our passage indicates that sin creates? [A wall (v. 14)]
what do walls do? - (separate)
If sin creates separation, how do we identify sin? (through the Law)
Ten Commandments review
See how sin separates people (ex. Steal from someone [use clubber]; lying)
Who gave the Law? (God)
God is the One who tells us what is right and wrong
God hates what is wrong, sin
We all have sinned and deserve God’s wrath
This is why we need Christ’s peace
We can’t save ourselves, but need to cry out to God.
Christ’s peace means bringing Christians together with God to be like Jesus. (One new man/transformation)
Transition: What do we do with this message concerning Christ’s peace?
Follow Christ’s Example in Proclaiming Peace (vv. 17-18)
He proclaimed Peace
We proclaim peace (sin separates, Jesus is our peace through the cross)
How do we proclaim this message? (Through God’s power.)
Conclusion: Friends, take what you have learned from Ephesians and share with others the peace that only the Lord Jesus can bring by putting faith in His life, death, burial, and resurrection from the dead!
