Introduction: Review the Blessings of Being Saved. God’s power to raise from the dead secures these blessings. We’re spiritually dead and need to be rescued from our sin that deserves God’s wrath.
Transition: If only God has the power to raise the dead and we’re dead in trespasses and sins, Who is the only One Who has the power to rescue us? Only God can rescue us! (Ephesians 2:4-7)
God’s rich mercy
Mercy is not getting something bad that you deserve.
In college, I took a class where at the end, I deserved a C
However, my teacher recognized my hard work in the class and gave me a B instead!
My teacher did not have to give me a B but mercifully chose to do so!
The punishment we deserve is God’s wrath, the right response to our sin that God hates!
With God’s mercy being described as ‘rich’, this means that God has tons of mercy! (Illus. Concerning a lot of something)
God’s great love
Love is doing what another needs the most (We need to be rescued and God rescues us!)
Since God’s love is described as ‘great’, this means that God has lots of love, He is full of love! (God’s love comes out in everything He does)
God’s great love also means that His demonstration of love is beyond comparison - no one loves like what God does!
We see how great God’s love is in comparison of how we treated Him - we’ve sinned (transgressions). [Illus. Do you feel like loving someone when they treat you badly?]
We see how great God’s love is in comparison to how He treats us - He’s given new spiritual life (v. 6)
Described as alive with Christ (we’re saved from God’s wrath and He’s changing us to be holy & blameless)
This new spiritual life is described as God’s rich grace!
Grace is receiving something good that you don’t deserve. (Illus. gift)
This grace is rich because it is a gift far better than any other good thing you could receive. (Illus. Through comparative gifts - maybe ask for examples [limit])
Conclusion: God loves you so much that He has decided to rescue you Himself out of His mercy, love and grace. If you have not experienced God’s rescuing you from your sins, please talk with one of your group leaders or myself about what this means.
