Introduction: We talked last Sunday about the Holy Spirit who lives inside of Christians and guarantees God’s presence with them and the blessings of being saved: being forgiven of our sins, being adopted into God’s family, being changed by God to be holy and blameless, and receiving the inheritance that we’re going to live with God forever someday. God has proven His power to secure these blessings by raising Jesus from the dead. As a result, God has given Jesus the right to tell us how to live, or authority.
Transition: We’re going to look at Ephesians 2:1-3 where I want for us to consider We need to be rescued! (Ephesians 2:1-3). First, let’s look at …
What does the word ‘rescue’ mean?
Someone’s in trouble and needs saving!
This trouble could be something that someone has caused (the bear)
This trouble could be something that you caused (riding your bike)
Draw out comparisons between just needing help and someone who needs to be saved. (help with my homework v. ‘oh no, I could get hurt if someone doesn’t help me; Illustration based on the game - maybe can choose a clubber)
Transition: None of these things compare to why we need to be rescued.
Why do we need to be rescued? (Ephesians 1:1-3a)
Dead: What does it mean to be dead? (no life, no response; illus. ‘Super Spud’)
In Sin & Trespasses
Define sin (anything we say, think or do that displeases the Lord; repeat; illus. not funny)
We want to sin (trespass) instead of please the Lord or otherwise, the Lord would not have to tell us about how bad it is! (illus. - clean your room)
Transition: So far, we’ve considered that we need to be rescued and that it’s because we’re spiritually dead because of sin. Sin has terrible results that we need to consider …
What do we need to be rescued from? (Ephesians 1:3b) Our sin that deserves God’s wrath
What is Wrath? (anger towards what is wrong and taking steps to make it right)
Who’s wrath is this? (God’s - He hates sin and must punish it; eternal)
Because God hates sin, we also ought to hate sin. (illus. What we should hate, ie. disobey - should hate it bc God hates sin - sin is opposed to God [remind of definition])
Conclusion: What’s great is that this is not the end of the story. We’ll come back next week and we’ll consider how God has come to rescue us. If you’re thinking, I know I need God to rescue me from His wrath and my sin - talk with your Table leaders or me.
