John 5:18–29 ESV
18 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. 19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. 22 For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. 25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
Who here like trivia. My son Matthias loves trivia. Each year for Christmas he gets some new form of trivia game. He has history trivia and animal trivia. Last year he got one about birds and man am I bad at that one. He beats me every time. Trivia also reminds me of my dad. For those of you who didn’t know my dad he almost never missed Jeopardy. I used to love watching with him. What I decided is if I got the right categories I would be okay, but some nights I wouldn’t stand a chance. So I thought I would have a Jeopardy question for you this morning. Is everyone ready?
I am the Jeopardy champion who has preached at Clappertown Alliance.
Who is Cory Hartman
As we turn to our text this morning. Jesus reminds us of the most important question that we all must answer. Who is Jesus of Nazareth? There are a lot of different answers people will give, but let’s look at Jesus’ own words.
To bring context to our passage this morning, Jesus just healed the man who had been an invalid for 38 years. And what reaction did Jesus get from the pharisees? vs 18
John 5:18 (ESV)
18 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him...
They wanted to kill Him! That is right even though the very Messiah they were awaiting is described in Isaiah as follows
Isaiah 35:5–6 ESV
5 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; 6 then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy. For waters break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert;
This is the messiah they are waiting for so why do they miss it. Why can’t they see who Jesus is?
Let’s finsih verse 18
John 5:18 ESV
18 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
Their first major issue is Jesus is breaking the Sabbath. But we have established in prior weeks that Jesus wasn’t violating God’s rules on the Sabbath. He was violating traditions of the elders. Remember Mark chapter 7?
Mark 7:5–8 ESV
5 And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” 6 And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, “ ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; 7 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ 8 You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”
So Jesus wasn’t violating the Sabbath that God established, He was violating the traditions of the elders. If their hearts were truly seeking God, they would have seen that. The question before us this morning is are you seeking the truth of who God is? Or are you here following the traditions of the elders?
John 5:17 ESV
17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”
The pharisees interpreted this statement as Jesus calling Himself God.
And instead of questioning themselves and their preconceived notions, what was their response?
John 5:18 ESV
18 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
How do we know that Jesus is telling the truth? The resurrection of Jesus. It is a historical fact.
Acts 12:1–2 ESV
1 About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. 2 He killed James the brother of John with the sword,
the bishop Clement of Alexandria (d. ca. 215)—Origen’s mentor—that “the person who led James to the judgment-seat was moved when he saw him bear witness, and confessed that he himself was also a Christian.”
Another example is from Origen of Alexandria
Origen of Alexandria (ca. 185-254) writes that the apostles divided up the work of evangelizing the world between them—Peter, for example, took Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, and Bithynia, and at “the last came to Rome, and was crucified head-downwards; for he requested that he might suffer thus.”
What else does our text tell us about Jesus? Look at verse 21
John 5:21 ESV
21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will.
Jesus is the only source of life! How important is that? He is the one that gives our life hope and purpose. All other pursuits are dead idols aren’t they? Every one is living for something and only Jesus gives us true life. He is also the only source for salvation.
What does our text tell us about man?
John 5:28–29 ESV
28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
You are going to die.
Not just die but you will face judgement.
“If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our dead bodies. And if they perish, let them perish with our arms wrapped about their knees, imploring them to stay. If Hell must be filled, let it be filled in the the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go unwarned and unprayed for.” - Charles Spurgeon
