Romans 5:1–11 HCSB
1 Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 We have also obtained access through Him by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also rejoice in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance, 4 endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope. 5 This hope will not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. 6 For while we were still helpless, at the appointed moment, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For rarely will someone die for a just person—though for a good person perhaps someone might even dare to die. 8 But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us! 9 Much more then, since we have now been declared righteous by His blood, we will be saved through Him from wrath. 10 For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, then how much more, having been reconciled, will we be saved by His life! 11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ. We have now received this reconciliation through Him.

This letter to the Romans continues and today it really gets good!
Romans 5:1 HCSB
1 Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
We have been declared righteous by faith or we have been justified by faith.
Faith in Jesus brings us in to right standing with God
We have been made Just in God.
Are wrongs are made right.
We have been declared righteous by faith.
I like contrasting Romans 3 with this chapter
Romans 3:19 HCSB
19 Now we know that whatever the law says speaks to those who are subject to the law, so that every mouth may be shut and the whole world may become subject to God’s judgment.
Romans 3 says we are GUILTY
Romans 5 says you are NOT GUILTY by faith in Jesus Christ
Romans 3 says you are subject to God’s judgement
Romans 5 says placing faith in Jesus we have peace with God.
Through Jesus we have been reconciled into right relationship with God! Our broken relationship with God is healed because of our faith in Jesus and what Jesus has done for us on the cross.
The enemy likes to pounce on the broken. The enemy likes when we live in broken relationships; broken relationships with each other, broken relationships with family, and ultimately broken relationship with God.
Romans 5:10 (HCSB)
10 For if, while we were enemies...
Isaiah 48:22 HCSB
22 “There is no peace for the wicked,” says the Lord.
Look at what faith in Jesus does for us
Romans 5:1 (HCSB)
1 we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Isaiah 32:17 HCSB
17 The result of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quiet confidence forever.
Condemnation means that God declares us sinners, which is a declaration of war. Justification means that God declares us righteous, which is a declaration of peace, made possible by Christ’s death on the cross. “Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other” (Ps. 85:10). “Because the Law worketh wrath” (Rom. 4:15), nobody condemned by the Law can enjoy peace with God. But when you are justified by faith, you are declared righteous, and the Law cannot condemn you or declare war!
Warren W. Wiersbe, The Bible Exposition Commentary, vol. 1 (Wheaton, IL: Victor Books, 1996), 527.
Romans 5:2 HCSB
2 We have also obtained access through Him by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.
Access:
Romans: An Introduction and Commentary D. The Blessings Which Accompany Justification: Peace, Joy, Hope, Love (5:1–11)

denotes the privilege of approaching or being introduced into the presence of someone in high station, especially a royal or divine personage. Here Christ is viewed as ushering believers into their new state of grace and acceptance before God

Romans 5:2 HCSB
2 We have also obtained access through Him by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.
The veil was tore
The dividing wall for the Gentile was broke down Ephesians 2:14.
We rejoice in the hope of the glory of God
Revelation 21:10–11 HCSB
10 He then carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, 11 arrayed with God’s glory. Her radiance was like a very precious stone, like a jasper stone, bright as crystal.
Revelation 21:22–23 HCSB
22 I did not see a sanctuary in it, because the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its sanctuary. 23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, because God’s glory illuminates it, and its lamp is the Lamb.
“Peace with God” takes care of the past: He will no longer hold our sins against us. “Access to God” takes care of the present: we can come to Him at any time for the help we need. “Hope of the glory of God” takes care of the future: one day we shall share in His glory!
Rejoice or “boast”. In the law we have nothing to brag about but in Christ we rejoice or boast in the future hope of the glory of God.

What about present day suffering?

Romans 5:3–4 HCSB
3 And not only that, but we also rejoice in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance, 4 endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope.
I think it is important to differentiate between suffering in obedience to Jesus and Suffering as a result of disobedience or sin.
Romans 5 speaks of suffering as a result of following Christ as Savior.
Paul writes this in a manor that says suffering is a part of being a Christian. He even writes in a way that says suffering is a means Christ uses to grow us.
We rejoice or boast in our afflictions.
Why?
afflictions produce endurance
Produces: to work or to work within or to work through. God is doing things to transform us.
Let me remind you of the concept of snowplow parent or lawn mower parent
They clear the path so that their child will not face any suffering. They make sure life is fair and their child has everything they need and want without having to strive or work for it.
Be honest and you don’t have to raise your hand but I bet some in this room were faced this week to be a lawn mower parent on the first week of school. Some wanted to change classrooms for their kids or lunch hours or bus routes or friend groups or some might have even said the words I am just going to homeschool to make this easier for my child.
Endurance produces proven character
N.T. Wright describes this as
It’s as if those who follow Jesus are caught between the Old age and the Age to come and this produces Suffering.
This suffering produces endurance and endurance produces proven character
Proven Character = Glory of God/Fruits of the Spirit
Amy said to JoHana yesterday that I wish I could go back and tell my younger self in the middle of suffering to trust that God will use it. We saw Him do it then.
It never failed that when a negative story was produced on Bridge of Faith that the church body would rally behind it and Bridge of Faith would receive financial gifts that boosted us majorly because of the negative news.
Proven character produces Hope
Romans 5:5 HCSB
5 This hope will not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
We have current hope in our afflictions and we have future hope in our afflictions.
Why?
God’s love has been poured out in our hearts
How?
Through the Holy Spirit who was given to us
The trinity is absolutely beautiful. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit all in community before creation loving one another.
In our affliction, the Holy Spirit is inside of you loving the Father and the Son. Gives us hope and is our deposit that guarantees the inheritance.

Oh the Love of God

Romans 5:6–8 HCSB
6 For while we were still helpless, at the appointed moment, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For rarely will someone die for a just person—though for a good person perhaps someone might even dare to die. 8 But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!
v.6
1.) it was at the right time
2.) It was while we were still powerless
3.) It was for the ungodly (Broken)
v.7-8

A person willing to die for a righteous man or for a good man obviously is offering himself as a substitute so that the righteous or good man can continue to live. This is the highest expression of human love and devotion. However, God’s love contrasts with human love in both nature and degree, because God demonstrates (“keeps on showing”) His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us (hyper, “in our place”). Though a few people might possibly be willing to die to save the lives of good people, though that is rare, Christ went well beyond that. He died in the place of the powerless (“feeble,” v. 6), the ungodly (v. 6; 4:5), sinners (5:8), and even His enemies! (v. 10).

Romans 5:9–11 HCSB
9 Much more then, since we have now been declared righteous by His blood, we will be saved through Him from wrath. 10 For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, then how much more, having been reconciled, will we be saved by His life! 11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ. We have now received this reconciliation through Him.
v.9
God proved His love by sending Christ to die for sinners, Sinners put their faith in Christ and through this faith you are declared righteous by the blood shed of Jesus.
We are rescued from the wrath of God (Romans 3)
v.10
While we were enemies God reconciled our broken relationship through Jesus. We will be saved by His life!
v.11
We rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ!
