*Guard Duty*

1 Timothy 6:20,21

 

Introduction: How many of you have ever had “guard duty”?

What was it like?

Was it exciting?

In closing out our studies in 1 Timothy we come to the final charge that is given by Paul.

He gives Timothy a closing command.

What is it and why does he need to listen?

He is to be on guard

 

a.

To guard or keep.

The same word is used in 30 places in the New Testament.

Some examples:

 

2 Timothy 1:12 KJV For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

 

2 Timothy 4:14 KJV Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works:15 Of whom be thou ware also; for he hath greatly withstood our words.

2 Thessalonians 3:3 KJV But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep /you/ from evil.

1 Timothy 5:21 KJV I charge /thee/ before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.

Jude 24 KJV Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present /you/ faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,

He is to guard what had been entrusted to him

 

A deposit, a trust or thing consigned to one’s faithful keeping.

1a used of the correct knowledge and pure doctrine of the gospel, to be held firmly and faithfully, and to be conscientiously delivered unto others.

Does the pure doctrine of the gospel need to be guarded today?

What does the enemy look like?

What might the opposing arguments that are falsely called knowledge be today?

How does a person guard the gospel?

What are the dangers of the gospel not being kept?

Why would people leave the sound teaching of the gospel for what is false?

Why do you suppose that Paul ended his letter to Timothy in this way?

Look back at any of Paul’s letters and you will find he ends them in a similar way.

What is the common element in the closing messages of Paul?  Grace!

Why did he make that his final words?

1 Timothy 6:20 NASB95 O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding worldly /and /empty chatter /and /the opposing arguments of what is falsely called “knowledge”—

1 Timothy 6:21 NASB95 which some have professed and thus gone astray from the faith.
