The Work Of The Holy Spirit

Much confusion exists about the person and work of the Holy Spirit because of careless exegesis and flippant use of Bible terms. For instance, the baptism of the Spirit is referred to directly only seven times in the New Testament. The first five references are prophetic (Matthew 3:11; Mark 1:8; Luke 3:16; John 1:26-33; Acts 1:5) and refer to John's preaching. One is historical (Acts 11:16) and only one is doctrinal (1 Corinthians 12:13). It is this last reference that gives us the spiritual significance of the baptism. It has nothing to do with tongues or super-holiness. It has to do with placing people as members into the mystical body of Christ.

a. I am now in Christ: the baptism (1 Corinthians 12:13)

b.  Christ is now in me:

(1)  The gift (Acts 2:38)

(2)  The indwelling (1 Corinthians 3:16, 6:19)

a.  The present: the seal (Ephesians 1:13)

"You are eternally mine"

b.  The prospect: the earnest (Ephesians 1:14)

"I am eternally yours"

a.  To make me spiritual: the filling (Ephesians 5:18)

b.  To make me successful: the anointing (1 John 2:20)
