Review of First Four Chapters

John (IV. Life Application: Parties and Promises)
I began driving before seat belts were installed in cars.
Even after we had them for many years, they were optional equipment.
Our children would play in the back of our station wagon with no safety attachments whatsoever.
But when seat belt laws were passed, we changed our habits.
But imagine a man who survives a terrible accident because of a seat belt.
Very likely he now buckles his seat belt regularly, not because of the law, but because he has experienced its lifesaving power.
Jesus came to save us from sin, but he does not want us to trust him just because it is the law
or because we’re supposed to follow certain religious traditions
—not even because we are desperate and have no other choice.
The Savior of the world wants us to trust him because we believe his promises are true and because he has never failed us in the past.
This is the core of the teaching so far in our finishing the first four chapters of John.
the law is meant to protect us, not save us....
JESUS IS GOD WHO CAME TO EARTH TO SAVE US
Jesus is modeling the need to GO, and make disciples
We need to learn what Jesus did so that we are able to know what to DO.
WJD leads us to ask and answer WWJD
We can honor that with our personal outreach
We can be a bigger part of our family church
We can be part of operations or organizations that allow us to speak the Gospel the Good news in to peoples lives
***********************************************
We learned alot since starting this series in April of this year.
Signs and wonders are cool but genuine faith is what saves us and motivates us to grow
We were all thirsty and meet with JESUS to receive the Living Water
The Main theme throughout our study is that Jesus is Divine, Jesus is God, part of the Holy Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Jesus came and paid the price once and for all for the ultimate accident of man — the fall that severed our relationship with God.
Jesus came and loved us ALL - past present and future to me with HIM.
If you are here today and don’t know Jesus as your personal Saviour then i ask you to make it a priority
to ask someone here today, or ask me after service to MEET JESUS and Proclaim Him LORD in your LIFE.

Communion

We are going to open today with taking communion.
Communion is a time in a Christian’s life to PAUSE
To open our hearts and minds to PRAY
To take a few moments and PONDER THE WORD in your LIFE
and then we PROCEED to the ACT of Communion with Him
IF you are not a believer then we ask you to let the cup and bread pass by this is a SPECIAL TIME for believers.
We again ask you to reach out to someone to talk to about Jesus
OR as we have learned in the last weeks
SIMPLY BELIEVE in JESUS
that HE is GOD
that HE is LORD OF ALL
that HE is the FIRST THING IN YOUR LIFE.
Lets Pray....
On the night that He was betrayed.....

One with the Father

We are opening John Chapter 5 today.
Our location today is back in Jerusalem
during a Jewish Feast or festival
it was another gathering of the Jewish people, and very well to note
that Jesus seems to bounce from Small to Large interactions with people groups
It is said that Jesus walked over 3125 miles in his three years of ministry.
Jesus was at the Passover Festival in March- April area of the year, then travelled to Samaria and back to Cana
It is likely this is a gathering to celebrate the growing season or the harvest.
The Jewish do this Feasts to REMEMBER THE WORKS, the blessings and the laws of GOD.
So it is interesting that GOD on EARTH visits them, and they are
so caught in traditions that they miss the Saviour.

Man at the POOL

The Jewish people believed in WASHING
the washing was symbolic for washing away or removing their sins
They would be required to wash prior to worship
to purify there hearts cleanse them from sin
Breaking the Law was washed off to be cleansed.
Remember that Law followers need Rituals LAW to overcome breaking of the Law.
They believed that one needed to be purified in order to be in the presence of God.
Lots of rituals and rules prior to coming into God’s presence.
We know today with Jesus in our life that we are purified by the blood of Christ. We can not only be in His presence but that He in the holy spirit lives inside us… We are HIS
Today we are Baptizing ---
The very act is a sign of humility, surrender,
join the BODY of Believers in displaying our Faith,
Love in Christ Jesus and our commitment to continue to
GROW to Know Him more as LORD
and not just our Savior.
Our new birth or being SAVED comes from FAITH ALONE
Baptized is a Model that Jesus set to display the UNITY with OUR FATHER and the COMMITMENT TO SERVING HIM.
Today we will see others JOIN THE FAMILY OF BELIEVERS
Lets open to John Chapter Five today.
John 5:2–5 (ESV)
2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades.
3 In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed.
5 One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
This pool was massive, hard to imagine in todays world but when it was discovered about 1888 in Jerusalem,
it was notable that it was big enough to accommodate the purification process needed for the large number of Jews
coming to Jerusalem during Festival times.
The blind, lame and paralyzed are lying about waiting for a good hearted person to help them into the pool.

Healing

John 5:5-95 One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?”
7 The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.”
8 Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.”
9 And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath.”
Jesus approaches a well know invalid at the pool
Jesus asks an obvious question.
what are you doing here, to you want to be healed?
The man as we have seen prior in our study
answer from his knowledge what he KNOWS
He answers that YES…
i just need to get in that pool and wash away my sins… but i cannot on my own power do it.
I CANNOT DO IT ON MY OWN POWER and NO ONE TO HELP ME
take a moment to PAUSE — Let that stew a moment
have you been there personally.
Once again in the Gospel of John
we see someone that didn’t understand WHAT JESUS WAS DOING or WHO JESUS IS?
Friends I don’t want you to be in that place.
Even if you know JESUS,
we can ALWAYS seek to KNOW HIM MORE.
Jesus has the ultimate one liners
Last week it was “YOUR SON WILL LIVE”
This week it is “GET UP, take your bed, and WALK”

Go and Sin No More

So FAR we have Jesus coming back to Jerusalem
Ask a invalid man if he wants to BE HEALED
the man answer with what he knows --- I CANNOT GET INTO THAT POOL to be HEALED
Jesus commands the Natural powers of the WORLD and HEALS HIM
SO HERE is the conflicts in our message today
and there is two of them
Verse 9 --- JESUS violates the LAW of the Pharisees Challenges the RULES of the JEWS ---- WHY?
Intentionally does HIS work on the Sabbath. — The Lord’s Day.
Verse 14 --- Jesus tells the man — GO AND SIN NO MORE
We should ask when we have questions in the text.
The Pharisees don’t see JESUS for WHO HE IS?
They are reacting because SOMEONE IS VIOLATING THE LAW
and that is all they learned, knew and practice with all there power
We have likely done this ourselves.......
maybe we grew up Catholic and someone doesn’t cross themselve after prayer.
Or didn’t pray prior to eating a meal...
Lets read
John 5:9–17 (ESV)
9 And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath.
10 So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.”
11 But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’ ”
12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?”
13 Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place.
14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.”
15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him.
16 And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.
17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”

Persecuting What We Don’t Understand

we have all been healed as Christians
healed from the Cure of Sin because of our faith in Christ
We are dead in our SIN and NOW alive in CHRIST JESUS
We have all misunderstood at one time in our lives where that healing has come from
We have all went and answered with “what we knew at the time”
and we have all had confrontation because of that misunderstanding.
Others —especially non Christians— Will do the same as the Pharisees and seek to apply their own MISUNDERSTANDINGS
to apply Man made rules in conflict to GOD’S Providence and Blessing.
We know that in Life we will have challenges and also WE WILL BE CHALLENGED
The answer is to FOCUS and LEAN on CHRIST alone.
One can wonder why the man who was healed to go directly to the Jewish leaders.
He picks up his bed and walked
The Jews confront him about carrying his bed on the Sabbath.
the man gives an excuse why — likely pass the blame
the man missed the miracle
or at least caved in to sharing it because of fear.
The Pharisees missed it because of their Traditions.
Was it sin that caused the mans handicap? I think NOT at ALL
the issue here is
Denying the POWER OF JESUS and Yielding to the Power of man
the Jewish leaders hear about the miracle, but focused on the violation of the law
Next week we will explore the second reason for the Jewish building persecution
The fact that JESUS calls GOD His Father
Now will you join me to celebrate the Sacred Act of Baptism.
Please come forward if you know the Lord as your Savior and wish to Glorify Him with the very act that He did.

Baptism

Matt 28 tells us that we are to GO — many have done that with those being baptized today
to make disciples --- these people have people in their life that lead them to this special day
We are celebrating the Baptize in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit
and this congregation is committing to teaching them the ways of Righteousness — strengthening them in the Ways of Christ.
Today we Glorify God by Growing others in Christ.
