CONTENTMENT (Exodus 20:17)
I. THE PURPOSE
A. James 1:14–15—greed can be called lust(Any desire that leads away from God is lust)
B. Mark 7:21–23—out of heart proceeds covetousness(Be satisfied with what you have)
C. Luke 12:15—material gain is not contentment(The way to happiness is through Christ)
II. THE POWER
A. Josh. 6:18–19—Achan(“I coveted them and took them”)
B. Ahab coveted Naboth’s vineyard— 1 Kings 21:1–10 (He was punished for it! Sinful lust always brings punishment)
C. Judas loved money—sold Christ (Matt. 26:15)(Covetousness destroyed Judas—the same will happen to you)
D. Last days there shall be covetous— 2 Tim. 3:1–2(Wanting things that they cannot afford)
III. THE PUNISHMENT
A. Lot’s wife— Gen. 19:15–17, 24–26 (She loved the sinful city more than God’s Word)
B. Achan— Josh. 6:16–18—stoned to death
C. Samson— Judg. 16—saw beautiful girl, coveted—paid for it(He lost his strength, his hair, his eyes, and made a slave)
D. David— 2 Sam. 1–14(Stole another man’s wife—paid for his sin fourfold)
E. Rom. 1:24—God gave up because of their lusts
F. Eph. 5:5—cannot enter into heaven
IV. THE PARDON
A. Prov. 28:16—hate covetousness, our days shall be prolonged
B. 1 Cor. 11:31—covet the gifts of the Spirit
C. Phil. 4:8—let the mind of Christ be in you
D. Ps. 37:16—what righteous have is better than the wicked
E. 1 Tim. 6:6—Godliness with contentment is great gain
F. 1 John 1:7—walk in light as He is in the light
