the forgiveness of sins,

1 John 1:9 ESV
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Matthew 26:28 ESV
for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Ephesians 1:7 ESV
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
Colossians 1:13–14 ESV
He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
What do we mean by forgiveness?
we do NOT mean that it is forgotten about or bushed off to the side. It isn’t just magically deleted from the timeline.
we DO mean that God is willing to take the hit for what you’ve done.
Illustration: you broke something, like a window.
additional: someone broke something not fixable. The story of Botham Jean and his brother Brandt
Amber Guyger had to deal with the guilt of breaking something she couldn’t put back together. When that bullet left her gun, she couldn’t take it back. She couldn’t fix Botham’s body, she couldn’t restore his life.
What about forgiveness of sins?
Sin is an example of us breaking something that we can’t fix
We have sinned against a holy God. He made this world good, and it was untainted by sin. death wasn’t a thing, and we made it a thing. People were meant to live in harmony, and we gossip about each other, hate each other, slander each other, kill each other.
Just like Amber Guyger probably wanted to be able to just do something to fix what she had done, but she couldn’t.
If it were a window, I could pay to get it fixed. If it were someone’s car, I would have to pick up a second job, but i could get it fixed. If it were anything material, we could work something it.
When we are convicted over our sin, you may feel like you just want to be able to do something to make it right, but you simply cannot. You have broken something that you cannot fix. To take a shot at the holiness of God is a shot you can’t take back.
Forgiveness is costly
it cost the Father his Son
In order to forgive you of your sins, the Father had to lose his Son. He had to send his Son, that which was dearest to him, to die and take the punishment of sin.
it cost the Son his life
Christ was the one who had to come and spill his own blood to make you clean.
What will forgiveness cost you?
Parable of the unforgiving servant Matt 18:21-35
Matthew 18:21–35 ESV
Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times. “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”
Forgiveness will cost you something, but we must forgive if we have been forgiven so much.
And our next line begins to explain one of the effects that flows from our sins being forgiven: the resurrection of the body

the resurrection of the body,

What are the wages of sin?
What did God promise was going to happen to Adam if he sinned?
1 Corinthians 15:20–22 ESV
But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
Although Adam brought us death, Jesus brought us new life through resurrection
Jesus didn’t just open up heaven for our spirits to go to, he accomplished a redemption for our body and spirit. There will come a day when our bodies are raised from the dead and glorified, and our souls will be reunited with our bodies.
Because Jesus took on flesh, died a physical death, resurrected in physical form, and ascended in bodily form, we can know that he accomplished a redemption that included more than just our souls or the spiritual realm, he redeemed the body and that which is physical too.
Philippians 3:20–21 ESV
But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.
Our bodies will be better than they are now, they will be immune to the effects of the fall
my grandma that lost her legs, eyes, and mind will receive them all back at the resurrection
No more sickness, injury, death, or anything like that anymore.

and the life everlasting.

John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Romans 6:23 ESV
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Revelation 21:3–4 ESV
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
After we resurrect from the dead, we will never have to fear death again. Never again will we die, but we will live forever.
This is the restoration of the natural order to replace the sinful way of things now.
