VBS Meeting Today @ 10:30

Let’s Jump into Today’s Study.
I feel it is necessary to discuss the state of the world at the time John wrote this letter.
It was utter depravity. There was this sense of total gratification of the Flesh............
Out of this depravity came the Docetism (those who believed Jesus only appeared to have a body and the Gnosticism, which held the belief that all physical matter was evil, the spirit was good, and only the intellectually enlightened could enjoy the benefits of religion.
Both of these groups taught that Jesus was not fully human.
John on the other hand had an eyewitness account of Jesus.....He touched him..... was taught by him.... walked with him.
Let’s dive into the scripture.
1 John 3:24 ESV
24 Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.
1 John 4:1 ESV
1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.

1. We all have a responsibility to test spirits.

Signs of a False Prophet include:
The usually have a central leader othe than the Bible and Jesus.
They claim to have a “New Truth”from a special Prophet or special revelation.
Attack the Christian Church
twisted Christian Doctrine
They undermine Scripture
They promote Salvation by Works
They undermine the promise of eternal life in God’s Grace.
1, 2 & 3 John Distinguish Truth from False Teaching / 4:1–6

GULLIBLE SAINTS

John felt compelled to write his epistle primarily because of the deceptive efforts of the false teachers. These false teachers were effective in misleading some Christians in Asia Minor because of the believers’ inexperience in discerning truth from error. John lovingly warned against such gullibility, charging his beloved “children” and “friends” to “test the spirits.” Believers today need to follow this same counsel. We live in an era that features all sorts of competing philosophies and contrasting claims (even in the religious realm). On the surface many of these common ideas seem to make sense. Furthermore, they are advocated by “knowledgeable experts” and believed by many. Nevertheless, when held up to the bright light of God’s truth, these notions are shown to be wrong … and dangerous. Critically evaluate the things you hear. Study God’s Word well enough to determine whether a claim is true or false.

1 John 4:2 ESV
2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,
If a Church or teacher does not profess two things they are not of God.
Jesus is fully God and was fully human.
Believers have a responsibility to call into question any church or teaching that rejects the historic, orthodox belief about the person of Jesus Christ.
1 John 4:3 ESV
3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.
1 John 4:4 ESV
4 Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
As I studied this scripture one of the concordances i study brought up an important fact about this scripture.
Notice something here.....The scripture does not say in me....it says in you
John did not write this letter to a person, He wrote it to a body....to a church.
The word is Plural.
2 Chronicles 7:14 ESV
14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
August 6-26 we are gathering as a people called by his name to humble ourselves and get up early to pray and seek his face for McPherson County.
Why because....
1 John 4:5 ESV
5 They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them.
Because is greater is he who is in us.
1 John 4:6 ESV
6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
The Spirit of Truth is the Holy Spirit.
Stand with me this morning.
