It is Written!

Matthew 4:1–11 NKJV
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ” Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ” Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ” Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ” Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

Tests WILL come.

Tests come to all.
Consider Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Job, Elijah, David, Daniel, Jeremiah, Jesus, the apostles, and others that we know or have heard about.
Tests come in the form of temptations and adversities.
Tests come to try our faith (James 1:2).

God will test our faith.

God does not tempt anyone (James 1:13).
The devil is called the tempter (Matthew 4:3; 1 Thessalonians 3:5).
God will allow our faith to be tested and will Himself test our faith.
The Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
True saving faith will be refined but never destroyed. False faith will be exposed by the trial.

What is the purpose of the test?

Deuteronomy 8:2–3 NKJV
And you shall remember that the Lord your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.
To allow us to experience needs beyond our control or ability to overcome.
Why?
To humble us.
To test us our authenticity.
To reveal what is hidden in our hearts.
To see if we will obey His word or not.
To teach us to live by the word of God.
In summary, tests strip us of trust in any source other than God Himself.

How do we pass the test of faith? (Five “R’s”)

Run to God as the object of your faith and don’t let go!
Job 13:15 NKJV
Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him. Even so, I will defend my own ways before Him.
Recall those who have passed the test of faith (Hebrews 11—“The Hall of Faith”).
You are not alone.
Others have been tested before and passed the test.
Rid your life of the sin that hinders your faith.
Hebrews 12:1 NKJV
Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
Rest your eyes on Jesus who passed every test.
Hebrews 12:2–4 NKJV
looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin.
Respond to every temptation and trial with the word of God.
We live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
Jesus confronted every temptation of the devil with, “It is written!”
Confront lies, temptations, adversities, etc. with the truth of God’s word!

Response to the Word

Have you been told that you are too far gone to be saved? “It is written!”—
Isaiah 1:18 NKJV
“Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.
John 3:16 NKJV
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Does it seem like temptation has the upper hand in your life? “It is written!”—
1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV
No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
Have you received a bad medical report that you will never get well? “It is written!”—
1 Peter 2:24 NKJV
who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
Do you feel like the world is against you? “It is written!”—
1 John 4:4 NKJV
You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God!
“It is written!”
