John 15:4 CSB
Remain in me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me.

INTRO—

“The word of the day.” [M-W Dictionary…WOTD…phone app]
KINGDOM LIFE (Recap)…
Jesus is the TRUE VINE
The Father is THE GARDENER
…who removes and prunes the branches
QUESTION:
(Today’s biblical ‘word of the day’…)
“Remain.” What’s it all about?

REMAIN…How Jesus uses this word.

“You must remain” [4a]
This statement is a command.
This statement is important.
This statement can be disobeyed. (Smaller fruit; lesser amount)
“If you remain” [4b,c ; Unless you…]
Expresses potential result. (If…then.)
“One who remains” [5; The one who keeps remaining…]
(Participle=a verbal noun/descriptive noun) One who is known as/for...
“If you don’t remain” [6]
Expresses clearly negative potential result. (If not…then.)

REMAIN…Why it’s so important.

Because…
Unable to produce fruit otherwise. [4b,c]
Disconnected from the source = not gonna happen.
Able to produce much fruit. [5b]
Producing fruit is amazing…being freed to produce MUCH fruit is awesomer!
Without Jesus we can do nothing. [5c]
Jesus repeats—for emphasis…to be sure his disciples heard it—the important baseline truth = Jesus is the SOURCE of KINGDOM LIFE.
Not producing fruit results in being thrown aside, withered, and burned. [6; Furthering Jesus’ statement in John 15.2]
John 15.2 “Every branch in me that does not produce fruit he removes, and he prunes every branch that produces fruit so that it will produce more fruit.”

CONCL—

REMAIN…How we do it. [What it looks like.]
“CONTINUE”
Stay [Like enjoying a roller coaster…stay in the car. Keep your hands & feet in the car at all times]
Dwell [Like establish your residence; move in and set up your home…here!; tie-in with ‘abide’ here, too…welcome to my humble abode.]
INVITATION:
Salvation…
Obedience…
Peace…
John 15:6 CSB
If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown aside like a branch and he withers. They gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned.
