You can’t trust in Jesus plus your own works to save you.
Today, Paul is going to show us why.

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
My story: One of my first years as director.
Signs of it:
Trying to prove yourself.
Achievement addiction.
Falling into despair when you mess up.
Beating yourself up when you mess up.

Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all.
Jesus lived the perfect life we couldn’t live. He died in our place, paying for our sin.
Idea: If you are trusting in circumcision (or anything else), why did Jesus need to die.

Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law.
If you are going to try and be saved by your own merit, than you need to go the whole way.
For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.
The point is, you can’t do it. (James 2:10)
That’s why Jesus came and died in our place.

For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope.
Even our hope is given by the Spirit by faith.
What does it mean by righteousness?
Righteousness that Grows over time: Sanctification.
The perfect righteousness we will have after this life.
Both.
You ever get frustrated by your tendency to sin?
One day, that’s gonna be gone.
Those brothers and sisters in Christ who bother you… one day they will be perfectly righteous.

For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.
He’s not saying if you are circumcised, your inferior in any way. He’s just saying whether you are or not doesn’t matter.
The main thing is your faith leading you to live a life of love.

You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth?
That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you.
“A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.”
I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. The one who is throwing you into confusion, whoever that may be, will have to pay the penalty.
Brothers and sisters, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished.
As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves!
