LIVING THE GOSPEL

1 PETER 4:1-6 “Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;
That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.
For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:
Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:
Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.
For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.”
lasciviousness
the practice of debauchery, lewdness, or licentiousness. In a word, to be lascivious is to be lustful.
lusts
to desire something strongly, conceived of as lusting after the thing
excess of wine
The evidence, as seen above, suggests that wine in the OT was not mixed with water and was looked on with favor when taken in moderation. Judges 9:13 presents wine as that…
The positive virtues are followed by four negative ones and one positive. A bishop must not be a drunkard, which is the opposite of sobriety in the previous verse. Drunkenness was one of the vices of ancient society. Drunkard may also be expressed as “addicted to wine (or, alcoholic beverages),” “drinks too much wine,” or “drinks wine to excess.” Wine came from the juice of grapes. Sometimes the juice was served in an unfermented state, but generally it was allowed to ferment. In situations where safe drinking water was scarce if not absent altogether, wine became the common ordinary drink. Drinking a moderate amount of wine would not make a person drunk; drunkenness is caused by excessive drinking. That is why in many parts of the Bible there is teaching against drinking too much wine rather than about abstinence from wine altogether. In certain cultures today, however, where wine is unknown, it will be necessary to employ a general word for “strong drink” or “strong alcoholic beverage” rather than a specific fermented beverage made from grapes. In some cultures palm wine will be the closest natural equivalent.

revellings
CAROUSING [Gk. kṓmoi] (Gal. 5:21); AV REVELLINGS; NEB ORGIES; [pótoi] (1 Pet. 4:3); AV BANQUETINGS; NEB TIPPLING; [syneuōchéō] (2 Pet. 2:13; Jude 12); AV FEAST; NEB “sit at table,” “eat and drink.” The references are to gluttonous feasting, which Gentiles evidently sometimes found hard to give up after they became Christians. The kṓmos was originally a religious procession (cf. MM, p. 367; Bauer, p. 462), later a joyous banquet; and pótos is in the strict sense a drinking bout. Paul admonishes his readers that excesses in eating and drinking are unbecoming the Christian awaiting the Parousia (Rom. 13:13), and belong to one’s lower nature (Gal. 5:21).
banquetings
BANQUET Banquets are special meals celebrating important events. Unlike Jewish cultic feasts, they are not official worship events, but neither should banquets held among God’s people be regarded… IT IS ALSO A PLACE WHERE RICH PEOPLE GATHER AND DRINK WINE
abominable idolatries
That which is utterly detestable in the sight of God, particularly sin and idolatry.
live according to God in the spirit.”
The activity of a god or spirit in influencing or coming upon a person and so directing or strongly influencing their activities.
Concepts of spiritual beings that reside in a person or thing and may have some degree of influence over that person or thing.
EZE. 36:26-27 “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.”
I will give you a new heart; And a new spirit I will put within them; And a new spirit I will put within you; I will remove the heart of stone from their body; I will remove the heart of stone from your body; I will give them a heart of flesh. I will give you a heart of flesh.

The Resurrection of Yahweh’s People (37:1–14) 1 The hand of Yahweh came upon me. He carried me away by the Spirit of Yahweh and set me down in the middle of the valley. It was full of bones. 2 As he led me around among them, I was surprised to see how exceedingly numerous they were there on the surface of the valley, and astonished at how extremely dry they were. 3 Then he asked me, “Human, can these bones live again?” I replied, “O Lord Yahweh, that only you know.” 4 Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones. Declare to them, ‘O dry bones, hear the message of Yahweh. 5 Thus has the Lord Yahweh declared to these bones: Look! I will infuse you with breath, and you will come to life. 6 I will attach sinews to you, cover you with flesh, and overlay you with skin. I will infuse you with breath; then you will come to life. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.’ ” 7 So I prophesied as I had been commanded. While I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound! The bones came together, each in its proper place. 8 I stared in amazement as sinews appeared on them, flesh grew, and skin overlaid them. But there was no breath in them. 9 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath. Prophesy, human! Declare to the breath, ‘Thus has the Lord Yahweh declared: Come from the four winds, O breath! Blow into these slain corpses, so they may come to life.’ ” 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me. The breath entered them, and they stood up on their feet, an exceedingly vast host. 11 Then he said to me, “Human, as for these bones, they represent the entire house of Israel. Look! They are saying: ‘Our bones are dried up; our hope has vanished; we are doomed.’ 12 Therefore, prophesy and say to them, ‘Thus has the Lord Yahweh declared: Look! I will open your graves, and I will raise you up from your graves, O my people, and I will bring you into the land of Israel. 13 And you will know that I am Yahweh, when I have opened up your graves, and raised you up from your graves, O my people. 14 Then I will infuse you with my Spirit and you will come to life. I will set you down on your own land, and you will know that I am Yahweh. I have spoken and I will act. The declaration of Yahweh.’ ”
