The Blessing From The Spirit

Text: Ephesians 1:13-14 “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”

Introduction

Our family will soon be boarding a plane to fly to England. Only after we board the plane and put our full trust in the pilot is there a number of things that start working to make sure we are safe, well cared for, heading the right direction, keeping us colliding with any outside forces, etc.
What we will learn tonight is something similar happens spiritually once a person surrenders a trusting faith in Jesus alone as their Savior. Notice the beginning of verse 13, “In whom ye also trusted…in whom also after that ye believed.”
Paul is moving on now to the IMMEDIATE experience of the Believers at Ephesus. The Holy Spirit was working and Paul wanted them to know that.
I want you to walk away tonight with the understanding of how the Holy Spirit blesses you as you go about living this life for the Lord.

1) The Tools Of The Spirit

A. His Inspired Words

a. “after that ye heard the world of truth”
i. Question: When did your coming to Jesus begin?
Paul is reminding them of the sweet blessing God gave them; ears to hear.
Luke 8:8 “8 And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.”
ii. Folks, it all begins with HEARING THE TRUTH!
iii. Did you know that not everyone is sharing the truth?
iiii. 1 Cor. 3:9 “9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.”
iiiii. Mark 16:15 “15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”
b. What exactly is the “truth” they heard?
i. “the gospel of your salvation”
1 Cor. 15:1-4 “1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”

B. Believers

a. Romans 10:14-15 “14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!”
b. Romans 1:16 “16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”

2) The Promise Of The Spirit

A. You are sealed by the Holy Spirit

a. Notice the tense in relation to the verb “sealed.”
i. Paul is speaking in the pasted tense.
ii. This soul sealing work was an immediate work at the moment of faith in Christ.
b. Notice the attribute of the Holy Spirit
i. Illustration: If someone is going to do work for me or on my behalf, I want to be sure I can trust their ability, quality and integrity.
ii. “HOLY Spirit of PROMISE”
He is HOLY; The full Godhead accepts His work
He lacks the ability to break any promise He makes.

B. What is the significance of the Holy Spirit’s seal?

a. It is a FINISHED transaction.
b. It implies OWNERSHIP.
i. 1 Cor. 6:19-20 “19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
c. It also means SECURITY/PROTECTION.
i. Do you remember the seal on Jesus’ tomb?
ii. Every believer has been immersed into a FINISHED TRANSACTION.
iii. John 14:16-17 “16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”
iiii. You may very well be guilty of grieving Him, but he never leaves you!
d. It sets a mark of authentication on your soul.
i. Illustration: Have you ever watched a show where they bring in someone to authenticate a signature?
ii. Romans 8:9 “9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”
iii. Quote: “It is not simply our lip profession, our religious activity, or our good works, but the witness of the Spirit that makes our profession authentic.” Warren W. Wiersbe, The Bible Exposition Commentary, vol. 2 (Wheaton, IL: Victor Books, 1996), 13.

C. The Holy Spirit is God’s first installment to guarantee He will finish His work and bring you to Heaven.

a. “Earnest” = down payment / engagement ring
i. 2 Cor. 1:22 “22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.”
ii. 1 John 3:1-3 “1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.”
b. His down payment is good until the redemption of your body.
i. You have been, you are being, and you shall be REDEEMED!

3) Praise To The Spirit

A. There is only one who receives the glory for such a work of grace; God’s Spirit

a. “praise of his glory” = the approval of God’s splender, brightness, amazing might and greatness.
b. Remember, it requires the INFINITE to create and place in you these ETERNAL RICHES.
c. THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING!!!

Conclusion

Have you received the Holy Spirit?
Are allowing Satan to deceive you into thinking that you don’t have assurance?
Don’t let a day go by that you don’t PRAISE the Holy Spirit for his continued work within you!
