Today we celebrate Father’s Day. It’s the day we set aside tho honor our dads. Now we all know that Father’s Day is a lot different from Mother’s Day which we celebrated last month. Moms are special but so are dads of course in a different way. In most cases, dads train their families the same way they were raised by their dads. Now that’s great especially if your dad was a strong follower of Jesus. However, that is unfortunately not the case. Many times dads start to follow the Lord after they experience the stress of life and come to the end of their rope so to speak. That was my case and although I had a good dad, who did love Jesus, my “training” was what we now call old school. Lot’s of chores and his saying that hard work never killed anyone. So that’s how I started training my sons and though it’s not bad for them to realize they need to work hard in school, at home and in life itself, the methods were not good as I started young as a dad. The Bible warns us in this area.
Ephesians 6:4 AMP
4 Fathers, do not irritate and provoke your children to anger [do not exasperate them to resentment], but rear them [tenderly] in the training and discipline and the counsel and admonition of the Lord.

Dad’s Need to Learn How to Motivate Their Children!

This type of fathering doesn’t come to us naturally. It’s not part of our unsaved DNA. I used to get frustrated with my two older boys because actually I was still super young and unwise when they were born. So I used to basically drive them nuts. Nothing was good enough or up to standard. Today we are tight and do have good relationships but really it’s because of Jesus that things have changed. It’s a little different for my two younger sons because by the time they were born, I was better as a Christian dad. So Father’s need to pave the way to following Jesus because children follow what we do not what we say!
Malachi 4:5–6 NLT
5 “Look, I am sending you the prophet Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the Lord arrives. 6 His preaching will turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their fathers. Otherwise I will come and strike the land with a curse.”

Turning the Hearts of the Fathers is First!

The cool thing about being a dad and a follower of Jesus is that how we start is not how we end. God knows we don’t have it together as dads and will cause our hearts to be turned to our children as we keep progressing. Again as we lead the way, our children will follow.
1 John 2:13 AMP
13 I am writing to you, fathers, because you have come to know (recognize, be aware of, and understand) Him Who [has existed] from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have been victorious over the wicked [one]. I write to you, boys (lads), because you have come to know (recognize and be aware) of the Father.

Father’s See Firsthand God’s Works!

Being honest as a dad, the reason we see and know God is there is because we know the pressure of leading a family can only be accomplished by totally relying on God. Only He can give us the strength and the wisdom to navigate a family. So as time goes on we become of Him, we recognize that He is the backbone of our lives and our families.
Hebrews 12:7–11 NIV
7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

Peace is the Result When Dad’s Do It God’s Way!

Did you notice that this passage says that we’ve had human fathers who disciplined and we respected them for it. Discipline done correctly causes respect. Much different from the warning in Ephesians about irritating and provoking our children so that they hate it. So here’s my conclusion for dads based on my life, Do It God’s Way!
