-If you'd like to follow along, please turn back to Luke 9.
And, we’re gonna be picking back up in verse 21...
…but, focusing primarily on verse 22.
-The reason for this is two-fold:
1.) We’re going to be looking at a lot of other scripture...
2.) I’m trying to allow appropriate time...
…for our observance of the Supper.
-So, I apologize for misleading you last week...
…about what we would cover this week.
Now, we actually already read Verse 21 last week...
And, I told you then, that...
We were stopping mid-sentence, and...
Would need to come back and connect the two sections today.
But, now we’re going to have to expand that out...
…into 3 connected sections...
All of which, however, are built upon the same proposition:
That Jesus of Nazareth...
Is the Christ!
The Son of the Living God!
-Well, alright...
…let’s read our text....
…and ask for the Lord’s help.
Luke 9:21–27 (ESV)
21 And he strictly charged and commanded them to tell this to no one,
22 saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”

-Before we jump back into our text...
…let’s be reminded of what had led up to it.
Remember, Jesus had gotten alone with his disciples...
…and had asked them (Verse 18):
Luke 9:18 (ESV)
18 . . . “Who do the crowds say that I am?
Then in verse 19, the disciples recounted the many...
wrong...
but, understandable...
…ideas that they were having.
Chiefly, they said:
John the Baptist...
But also...
Elijah
Another one of the OT prophets.\
-But, then remember, that he called upon the disciples...
…to juxtapose the people’s responses...
…with their own.
And Peter spoke up...
(And for (possibly) the first time)
…absolutely nails the right answer, saying:
Matthew 16:16 (KJV)
16 ...Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
Then, Jesus told him that the fact that he knew this...
…was direct evidence of God’s blessing upon him!
He told him that he had come to this understanding...
…because the Father had deigned to reveal it to him.
-Then, (and I only mentioned this briefly, in passing)...
He gave Peter this astounding statement:
Matthew 16:18 (ESV)
18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
And also:
Matthew 16:19 (ESV)
19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
And after having given them such grand and glorious promises...
…Luke tells us this (Verse 21):
Luke 9:21 (ESV)
21 And he strictly charged and commanded them to tell this to no one,
Matthew adds: “that he was the Christ.”
And, my premise to you last week, was that...
…this was because they were neither...
Equipped, nor
Ready...
…to do so.
They still had MUCH to learn about...
The Messiah
His Kingdom
His Mission on the earth.
-And, I believe that Verse 22...
…illustrates that in a big way!
Look at with me...
…and notice how it begins:
Luke 9:21–22 (ESV)
21 And he strictly charged and commanded them to tell this to no one,
22 saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things...
Now, remember how Peter had reacted to this...
And then, we’ll try to understand why he did so:
Matthew told us:
Matthew 16:22 (ESV)
22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.”
-And, Remember, again, Jesus’ response to him:
Mark 8:33 (ESV)
33 But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”
-Now, what was the cause of all of this confusion?
-Well, there’s a big clue to the answer to that...
…contained (once again) in that phrase:
The Son of Man
Remember, Jesus had begun by saying that...
Luke 9:22 (ESV)
22 . . . “The Son of Man must suffer . . .”
Here’s why I think that was such a stumbling block for Peter:
Daniel 7:9–14 (ESV)
9 “As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its wheels were burning fire.
10 A stream of fire issued and came out from before him; a thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened.
13 “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him.
14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
Does that sound like...
Victory,
Or...
Defeat?
Glory,
Or...
Suffering?
This was the way the Messiah was most often described!
As an unconquerable King...
Who would put to flight the enemies of God’s people...
And establish His Kingdom FOREVER!
Let me show you a few more:
(They may make us be more sympathetic to Peter)
(May even cause us to eat a little humble pie ourselves!)
Psalm 2:1–12 (ESV)
1 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,
4 He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision.
5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying,
6 “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.”
7 I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. (Resurrection)
8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.
9 You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”
10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
Psalm 110:1–7 (ESV)
1 The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”
2 The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies!
3 Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power...
5 The Lord is at your right hand; he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.
6 He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses; he will shatter chiefs over the wide earth.
Isaiah 9:6–7 (ESV)
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Does any of this allude to:
Suffering?
Defeat?
(And there are such important hermeneutical lessons in this:)
1.) Everything Scripture says on a subject...
…must be taken into account...
…BEFORE a position is taken.
2.) Let Scripture interpret Scripture!
(And, we’ll certainly try to do both of those, this morning)
-But first, look at a second stumbling block in our text:
Jesus told them...
Not only, will he suffer...
And that He “must” suffer...
And that he was going to suffer A LOT...
...He also told them:
Luke 9:22 (ESV)
22 “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected . . .”
Has a formal, Judicial connotation
By Whom?
Remember:
Psalm 110:3 (ESV)
3 Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power....
But Jesus says:
Luke 9:22 (ESV)
22 “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, . . .”
Think about that!
Think about what that was implying:
It’s telling us that:
John 1:11 (ESV)
11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.
Which tells us, that:
Romans 9:6 (ESV)
6 ...not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel,
And that:
Romans 2:28–29 (ESV)
28 ...no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical.
29 But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter...
Which means that:
Galatians 6:15 (ESV)
15 ...neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.
Which means that:
Romans 9:8 (ESV)
8 ...it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring.
Indeed, brethren...
Psalm 110:3 (ESV)
3 Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power...
-Do you see why Peter is struggling so much with this?
Well... just wait!
He says... not only:
Will he...
Must he...
Suffer!
And, not only...
Will he...
Must he...
Be rejected by his own ethnic kinsman!
He says that this is going to be the result:
Luke 9:22 (ESV)
22 . . . .“The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed . . .”
What?!?
How can The Son of Man be supremely victorious...
…if he is KILLED?
Especially, if he’s going to be murdered...
…by his own theocratic lesser-magistrates!
(The ones who were assumed to be...
…leaders in his theocratic kingdom!)
-Jesus made a similar statement to the crowds in John 12.
Look at their response:
John 12:34 (ESV)
34 So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”
Those are (in a sense) the right questions.
The OT did affirm that...
The Christ
His Kingdom...
WOULD last forever!
Daniel 2:44 (ESV)
44 And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever,
So, what were they missing?
Something Major!
A Messianic thread that was there all along.
(Funny how we see what we want to see, isn’t it?)
-Turn to Isaiah 53.
We’ll actually begin in...
Isaiah 52:13 (ESV)
13 Behold, my servant shall act wisely; he shall be high and lifted up, and shall be exalted.
And, of this SAME victorious servant, he says:
Isaiah 53:3–4 (ESV)
3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
The prophecy goes on to say:
Isaiah 53:7–11 (ESV)
7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.
8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living...
9 And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.
But it says this:
10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief...
And yet:
11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied...
This was the aspect of the Messiah’s mission, that they...
Didn’t see
Didn’t understand.
And yet, it was the most important.
Here’s why:
Let’s fill in those blanks:
Isaiah 53:4–6 (ESV)
4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
This is Penal Substitutionary Atonement!
Without it...
There is no Messianic Victory
There is no Kingdom of God!
Why?
Isaiah 53:10–11 (ESV)
10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring...
11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.
He’s providing for them what it takes...
…for them to be in a right relationship with God!
-Now, watch what I skipped over again:
Isaiah 53:10 (ESV)
10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt . . . he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
What does this mean?
How can he prolong his days...
…if he has given himself over to substitutionary death?
Look back at our verse:
Luke 9:22 (ESV)
22 … “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”
That’s how he prolongs his days
That’s how his kingdom lasts forever
That’s how the Victory is won...
…through apparent defeat!
That’s how the Messianic inheritance was claimed
And, That’s how the will of the Lord prospers in his hand
That’s why the Cross and Resurrection...
…was always the Messiah’s Mission!
Jesus said this, back in John 12.
John 12:27 (ESV)
27 “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour.
Then he says:
John 12:31–32 (ESV)
31 Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out.
32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”

-And here we are, brethren...
All of these years later...
...Assembled together, on this very day, with...
…hundreds of millions (if not billions) of people...
…from every nation, kindred, tribe, and tongue...
Worshiping the Son of Man...
...our risen and abiding King
Serving in His everlasting Kingdom
And being reminded of what he has given...
…to make it all possible!
-You see, death, is a greater enemy than Rome!
How has he delivered us from its domain?
By giving us the bread of Life!
-Sin, is a greater threat to us than any natural foe!
Sin, is what brings the curse of almighty God upon our heads!
We needn’t worry about the wrath of men!
How has he neutralized the threat of sin?
By giving us the cup of blessing!
-Brothers, would you please come up.
Let’s pray together

Introduce and Administer
Paul said:
1 Corinthians 11:23–24 (ESV)
23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread,
24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
Pray and Partake
Paul goes on:
1 Corinthians 11:25 (ESV)
25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
Pray and Partake
Always Remember, brethren...
1 Corinthians 11:26 (ESV)
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
Amen, Let’s continue to worship our King!
