Deuteronomy 5:6–21 ESV
6 “ ‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 7 “ ‘You shall have no other gods before me. 8 “ ‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 9 You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 10 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. 11 “ ‘You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. 12 “ ‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. 15 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. 16 “ ‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. 17 “ ‘You shall not murder. 18 “ ‘And you shall not commit adultery. 19 “ ‘And you shall not steal. 20 “ ‘And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 21 “ ‘And you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. And you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, or his male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.’

Big Idea

Jesus is our Sabbath Rest

While The First commandment teaches us who the true God is, the second true worship, the third true reverence, the fourth teaches us how to live.
All feast days and Sabbaths as well as the seventh day were a shadow of things to come
Colossians 2:17 ESV
17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.
. The Sabbath foreshadowed the rest of believers that was to be obtained by Christ—namely,
(1) spiritual rest, the rest experienced by the conscience freed from the fear of divine wrath and the rest consisting in ceasing from our evil works (Matt. 11:28
Matthew 11:28 ESV
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Romans 5:1 ESV
1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 4:3 ESV
3 For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said, “As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter my rest,’ ” although his works were finished from the foundation of the world.
Isaiah 58:13–14 ESV
13 “If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight and the holy day of the Lord honorable; if you honor it, not going your own ways, or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly; 14 then you shall take delight in the Lord, and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
(2) heavenly rest—that is, not only forsaking our sins but also resting from the labors and tribulations of earthly life
Psalm 95:11 ESV
11 Therefore I swore in my wrath, “They shall not enter my rest.”
Revelation 14:13 ESV
13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Blessed indeed,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!”
Hebrews 4:10 ESV
10 for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.

Why Sunday?

The Sabbath day was indeed Saturday and with the Resurrection of Jesus Sunday, the day of Resurrection the sabbath moves to Sunday the first day of the week.
Intially the Sabbath was part of the cerominoal law (Explain this) and the Moral law (how to live)
Jesus is the fulfillment of the cerminal law and so we don’t do the things the priest did as Jesus finished that
Hebrews 9:11–15 ESV
11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God. 15 Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.
and Matt. 5:17-18
Matthew 5:17–18 ESV
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
So we See that the cerminonaly realtionship is gone, but Christians even in the Bible start observing the Lord’s day which is Sunday.
So the command stops being the actual sabbath and turns to You must actually rest and worship one day a week. The early Christians choose the first day of the week as that was the day of the Resurrection.
Reformed Ethics, Volume Two: The Duties of the Christian Life (Conclusions regarding Sunday Observance)
Texts like Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:1–2; and Revelation 1:10 do show that this day was soon observed by the churches in coming together when preaching and sacraments would be administered.

Sabbath Yes or no?

Let's take a step into Theological controversy around the 4th Commandment this morning. A few weeks ago I said I was a Sabbatarian let me argue today that keeping the Sabbath helps you keep the commandments!
Some hold that the command of Sabbath keeping has been abrogated as the ceremonial law has been fulfilled in Christ, as they believe that the sabbath was a command to the Jews like the sacrifice of Bulls and goats. This was held by Saint Augustine and some in our Baptist camp today.
I think we should keep it because God took a day of rest in Genesis
Genesis 2:1–3 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.
This day was made Holy by God so it is not a ceremonial law but a creational law. John who wrote this text Kept the Lord's day when he was visited by the Angel that gave the vision in Rev. 1:10
Other Big names who held to Sabbath keeping are Luther, Calvin, Knox held to a keeping of the Sabbath, though they disagreed on application.
Luther and Calvin both held to a view that Sabbath is Sunday and that you should keep it and it is a day of rest, relaxation, and recreation.
Knox, Calvin's disciple held that you should not have recreation on Sundays. That would go on to influence the every English speaking nation. America has a curious situation show up because so many settlers came from place in Europe that allowed recreation on Sundays.
When I look at the text it seems that it's ok to love God and enjoy his blessings.
Sabbath Keeping? Man was mad for the Sabbath, not sabbath for the man - You need to rest you need a day of planned relaxation, whatever that looks like for you. That doesn't mean you can't do important or necessary things (see Jesus about pulling an ox out of a hole, or seeking medical aid) it just means God has given you the freedom to not be in bondage to the same things at least one day a week. Practically this means you should strive to meet your needs to survive in 6 days and enjoy the Freedom in Christ on the Lord's day.
So you come to church worship, thank God for the last week and pray to him for the new week to come. Learn something, strive to apply it, get the grace that you can only receive from being at church. Then go out from here be salt and light. Go home, cook all day, watch the game with your family, take the boat out, do that hobby, pick up that book you've been meaning to read, toss a child in the air! Thank God the whole time. Love him and enjoy his blessings. God is glorified when we enjoy what he has given us and we are happy doing it.
If you have some say. Close your business on Sunday. Turn off the TV and make it about family, a gift that God has given you!

Applications

Actually take a rest (Three fold)

So if they day is a that we enjoy God and participate in his blessings. Plan to do so. Some of you my share a conviction that says “we cook extra the day before so we can rest today.” Some may hold to the opposite. “I will spend all afternoon grilling out and enjoying creation.”
Some will take a glorious nap. The day should be planned for and built up.
I want to repeat part of Sunday school this morning.
When you put everything before Jesus on the Lord’s day you are saying that is king not Jesus. You teach your Children, your grandchildren that. Plan accordingly, if you love sports which are great, I just saw Vegas win the Stanely Cup and now have to wait for my Birthday month to see hockey again, but that comes second or third.
If you help manage organizations or leagues push to have practices, games, or meetings in the later afternoon or on another day of the week. You are giving people a true rest.

Sabbath as riches

For society Sabbath is necessary. It is the one time that those in the middle and the bottom of the economic ladder can enjoy relaxation. Our father who owns everything saw fit to give you and I a day to enjoy and rest from our work. It is a day when rich or poor we can all stop for a moment. I once read a document saying that one thing that Christians and socialist can agree on is a day of rest! Look see God is bridge building here! So if your a boss or a business owner God is commending you to give your people rest. Listen to this
Nehemiah 13:15–22 ESV
15 In those days I saw in Judah people treading winepresses on the Sabbath, and bringing in heaps of grain and loading them on donkeys, and also wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of loads, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I warned them on the day when they sold food. 16 Tyrians also, who lived in the city, brought in fish and all kinds of goods and sold them on the Sabbath to the people of Judah, in Jerusalem itself! 17 Then I confronted the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the Sabbath day? 18 Did not your fathers act in this way, and did not our God bring all this disaster on us and on this city? Now you are bringing more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.” 19 As soon as it began to grow dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut and gave orders that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. And I stationed some of my servants at the gates, that no load might be brought in on the Sabbath day. 20 Then the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice. 21 But I warned them and said to them, “Why do you lodge outside the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on they did not come on the Sabbath. 22 Then I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves and come and guard the gates, to keep the Sabbath day holy. Remember this also in my favor, O my God, and spare me according to the greatness of your steadfast love.
God through elites, the nobles to rest (v17) and the merchants the entrepreneur classes to rest (v20). When you rest and give your employees rest

I have to Work

I want to tell you that some work is necessary on the Lord’s day. Police, military, Hospitals, infrastructure manrgemnet, pilots and aircraft, seaman and so on. We see in scripture that people still must do somethings on the sabbath. Priests still had to work, in Nehemiah we don’t hear him chastising the soldiers. I would say based off of biblical data and church history, you should strive to get one day of a week and devote it to the worship of God. If your in one of those jobs and have the blessing of getting that shift changed seek it. Sunday is a great day, but the day you’re given is also a great day. This isn’t optional work, God understands that, literally when God rested on the sabbath he didn’t stop sustaining reality.
Colossians 1:16–17 ESV
16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
Mark 2:27 ESV
27 And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
We are commanded to worship, it isn’t optional I don’t believe Sunday is a the day it always has to be on, but this is the Day the Holy Spirit though generations of Christians and
