Review

Last week we studied a text that was well known and often misused
remember we addressed that many people use it to justify drinking
We talked about Jesus is in ALL things, even the small things
We showed you a map of the area that Jesus would be moving around in and today we open with Jesus moving again
Today we visit another OFTEN used by Christians seeking to Justify the
WRONG USE OF ANGER.

Introduction

From Capernaum back to Jerusalem for the Passover
Capernaum will be Jesus’s adopted home base for His Ministry
The Bible says that He and His disciples stayed a few days and then travelled to Jerusalem for Passover.
Lets read together our Scriptures today. I am reading from the ESV translation.
John 2:12 ESV
12 After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.
John 2:13–14 ESV
13 The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there.
John 2:15–16 ESV
15 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16 And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.”
John 2:17–18 ESV
17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” 18 So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?”
John 2:19 ESV
19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
John 2:20–22 ESV
20 The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
Jesus goes from a private affair of a wedding to a very large public gathering.
Jesus sees first hand the Profiteering of the Temple
Jesus is now around thousands of Jewish visiting for the Passover
There are three lessons today
Righteous Anger
the Derogation of Jewish Society or State of Society
Prophesy of Jesus

Jewish Passover

A yearly holy day set apart for the Israelites to observe the Exodus from Egypt,
particularly the passing over of the Israelite firstborn males when the firstborn
of Egypt were struck down in the last of ten plague
Ritualist
Travel to Jerusalem
Picking a NON-BLEMISHED LAMB
Participating IN the Satar
Following MAN’S PROCESS and NOT God’s
Structured MEAL to be PIOUS
Becoming a thing NOT THE THING
Like Church today
NOT ATTENDANCE, BUT GROWTH
DOING THE DEEDS and MISSING the POINT

State of the Society

Following Something but not ALL things
Maybe today it would be like people that only come to church on Christmas and Easter
They come and leave feeling like they have done their duty
or maybe a little narrower
churchgoers that come when they are in town or they don’t have something else planned.
It is NOT church going that Saves you --- But the heart
Do you prioritize the GATHERING?
Do you plan around church?
of do you plan church around the world?
WE NEED TO DO THE WORK OF CHRIST and NOT FOCUS ON THE TEMPLE of EARTH
BUT THE TEMPLE WHICH IS WITHIN US DAILY
This is a lot of what was going in in this time.
People were coming to Jerusalem out of TRADITION
maybe out of Obligation
Maybe simply out of the Law or
maybe even because they loved the PARTY.
There is a major sense of loss of PURPOSE
There is a statement that people were not BRINGING there Sacrifice, but BUYING there Sacrifice
Hey lets face it … we are surround by that today.
People that DO CHURCH because it is the RIGHT THING to DO
They don’t DO CHURCH for
GLorifying and Growing.

Righteous Anger

Friends
This is CONFUSION in our CHRISTIAN WALK
We NEED TO LEARN WHAT TO GET ANGRY ABOUT
Small things versus GOD THINGS
lets look at the Temple Courts for a few moments in light of our church today.
Instead of the Gospel we see a SHOW
Instead of the Spirit moving we see people planning
Many churches do events to draw people, when it should be about the Gospel
ILLUSTRATION:
I remember being part of a church that spend thousands of dollars on an event with Real life crashed cars and marvel characters, they had amazing costumes rented and training with a profession to play the part. LIGHTS, Spotlights, MUSIC and THEMES.
The staff was required to spent four days helping with setup and training.
The event was amazing for sure
BUT i asked a question was in was all set up?
What is the point of all this?
I got the answer --- to draw people to our church so that we can Know Christ and make Him KNOWN
Then i ask another question.....
awesome… SO WHERE is JESUS in all of this??
I was told that they had a Paper with the Gospel on it placed in the Giveaway Bag at the end of the Drive through Event.
What do i know?
Yet there is a correlation to what was going in in Jesus Day.
People were Playing Jewish --- and Others were Profiting from it.
Sadly — many churches in the world today are bringing in the money but selling the SHOW ---
Building amazing facilities
Paying Pastor big bucks — over 300k per year
Investing in the world and the the KINGDOM
If a church is bringing in 15 million a year, why would there be people needing food, clothing, and struggling.
The Bottom line of Verses
John 2:16–18 ESV
16 And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.” 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” 18 So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?”
WE NEED TO OBEY JESUS
TAKE THESE THINGS AWAY
CHANGE OUR FOCUS LORD

Destroying the Temple

Verse John 2:19
John 2:19 ESV
19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
Jesus was talking about HIMSELF
THEY were Thinking of THEMSELVES

Raising Up

Friends
I don’t want to shorten this MOST IMPORTANT VERSE or rather my explanation of it
BUT WE HAVE INFORMATION TODAY THAT THEY DIDN'T HAVE THEN
Jesus is starting HIS WORK ON EARTH
the disciples are PART of it
BUT will start the MOVEMENT at PENTECOST in the BOOK OF ACTS
The WORLD not JUST JERUSALEM will KNOW of CHRIST
We know that HE IS THE WAY THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE
They didn’t know BUT in THREE YEARS and THEN IN THREE DAYS THEY WILL
KNOW.
John 2:21–22 (ESV)
21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
Friends
We cannot use this verse to justify our ANGER
We need to PAUSE< PRAY<PONDER< and then PROCEED
in our reactions
We need to resolve with the SPIRIT, whether this is a
GOD THING OR A SELFISH THING?
We need to model JESUS and not the TEMPLE MARKETERS of this verse
CLOSE.
