Introduction

Last Saturday in Lancaster PA they had a gay pride parade and a man wearing a Shirt with the outline of America with the word repent walk up with a placard Go and Sin no more. It was in a public space and the cops arrested him. So Lancaster county is like Sarasota, very conservative, filled with Amish and Mennonites, openly Christian an all around wonderful place. When I was searching out my call when I lived in PA I looked in that area because it is just wonderful.
Every culture has blasphemy laws. Yes some are more honest about it, like China, Russia, and the entirety of the Islamic world, but so does ours.
In Islamic lands you insult the honor of Muhammad it may get you killed, In China and Russia it’s the leaders or the state. In America we hide this behind political correctness, which is news speak for Blasphemy laws. You want to get cancelled, have you bank account taken away, your social media shut down say the wrong thing, believe the wrong thing, do the wrong thing.
It shouldn’t surprise you that this sermon is the one of those wrong things. Pretty much this whole series is.
We used to joke in seminary, and my wife doesn't like this joke, that we are all on a list to be rounded up one day. More and more it looks like that punchline is going to be more punch then line if we don’t stand up for Christ.

The Text

Deuteronomy 5:6–21 ESV
6 “ ‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 7 “ ‘You shall have no other gods before me. 8 “ ‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 9 You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 10 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. 11 “ ‘You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. 12 “ ‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. 15 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. 16 “ ‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. 17 “ ‘You shall not murder. 18 “ ‘And you shall not commit adultery. 19 “ ‘And you shall not steal. 20 “ ‘And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 21 “ ‘And you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. And you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, or his male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.’

Breaking down The Verse

Deuteronomy 5:11 ESV
11 “ ‘You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
Command, take up literally lift up, to bear it.
We are identified by him and carry his name with us.
We are told to not do so vainly. Use his name falsely, in empty trivial ways.
A curse is attached at the end.

Name of the Lord

Naming in Scripture accomplishes three purposes: exercising sovereignty (control), giving revelation (authority), and locating (presence).

NAMING IS EXERCISING SOVEREIGNTY (CONTROL)

The Doctrine of the Christian Life Naming Is Exercising Sovereignty (Control)

First, naming is an exercise of sovereign control. The one who gives a name to someone else has some measure of control over the one who receives it. The parent names the child, the conqueror names the conquered city, and the Lord names his people. Yahweh names himself, for there is no one higher than him. This fact indicates his aseity, his self-sufficiency, his control over all things pertaining to himself.

God also places his name upon his people Num. 6:27
Numbers 6:27 ESV
27 “So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.”
Deuteronomy 28:10 ESV
10 And all the peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they shall be afraid of you.
2 Chronicles 7:14 ESV
14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
Daniel 9:18–19 ESV
18 O my God, incline your ear and hear. Open your eyes and see our desolations, and the city that is called by your name. For we do not present our pleas before you because of our righteousness, but because of your great mercy. 19 O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive. O Lord, pay attention and act. Delay not, for your own sake, O my God, because your city and your people are called by your name.”
Revelation 13:6 ESV
6 It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling, that is, those who dwell in heaven.
, identifying his future with theirs. As long as they bear his name rightly, not in vain, he will protect them by his power.

Naming Is Characterizing (Authority)

The Doctrine of the Christian Life (Naming Is Characterizing (Authority))
Names in Scripture both denote and describe; that is, they have both denotation and connotation. To name somebody is to say something about him. A father would express in the child’s name his hopes for the child, some circumstances of the child’s birth, or his feelings about the event.
The Doctrine of the Christian Life Naming Is Characterizing (Authority)

In that way, his names are revelational. Yahweh connotes God’s lordship attributes, Elohim his creative power, El Shaddai his might, El Elyon his transcendence, Yahweh Sabaoth, his lordship over the armies of heaven.

So His name has great meaning. Our names have great meaning as Christians
Psalm 8:1 “1 O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.”
Proverbs 22:1 “1 A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.”

NAMING IS LOCATING (PRESENCE)

His name helps you identify things about him. Just as when you call on a person, when you talk about concespts like Holiness, glory, majesty you are locating and pointing to God.

Whose name do you bear.

The Ten Commandments: A Guide to the Perfect Law of Liberty Commandment III: “Thou Shalt Not Take the Name of the Lord Thy God in Vain”

We receive our names and identities from others, as a gift. Yahweh, who names himself, shares that Name with Israel. The Ten Words address Israel as Yahweh’s redeemed son (Exod 4:23). The Third Word assumes that family connection. As son, Israel has received the family name of Yahweh.

The Ten Commandments: A Guide to the Perfect Law of Liberty Commandment III: “Thou Shalt Not Take the Name of the Lord Thy God in Vain”

In the new covenant, we bear the Name because we’re baptized into the Name of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. With that gifted name comes a new identity, a new history, and membership in a new family

The Ten Commandments: A Guide to the Perfect Law of Liberty Commandment III: “Thou Shalt Not Take the Name of the Lord Thy God in Vain”

The Hebrew verb, however, isn’t “take” or “speak,” but “lift up,” “carry,” or “bear.” We bear God’s Name on our tongues when we swear, but the Name is also imprinted on our head, hands, and feet. We bear the Name lightly with indifferent or disobedient worship (Exod 20:22–26), with casual sex (Amos 2:7), or when we steal (Lev 6:2–5).49 Speaking or silent, active or passive, we bear the name all the time in everything we do.50 Every sin is a violation of the Lord’s holy Name, the Name he shares with us.

Fast application:

Because we bear the name of our God we must be exemplary and honorable in our actions.

Application

God’s Name is to be Hallowed

Matthew 6:9–13 KJV 1900
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
I used the KJV because I have it near memorized in this version.
Verse Matt. 6:9
Matthew 6:9 (ESV)
9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
Is Jesus telling us that God’s name is to be seen as Holy and glorious. A Request that God’s named be Hallowed means that
The Reformation Heritage KJV Study Bible The Sermon on the Mount (5:1–7:29)

A request that God would cause people to honor Him as holy.

This encouragement is so that we pray that God’s name is known to all. He will reveal his name to people as he did to Moses in the burning bush, and as He did at the announcement of the birth of His son, and at his son’s baptism. So Christian is is our call to make the name of God known. Proclaim Christ!

False Prophecies

Declaring something in Jesus's name that doesn’t happen.
Talk about college and a girl saying God said we’re going to get married.
This is dangerous ground attributing prophecy to Jesus that isn’t true is a bad place
The bible Says this
Deuteronomy 18:20–22 ESV
20 But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.’ 21 And if you say in your heart, ‘How may we know the word that the Lord has not spoken?’— 22 when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word that the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously. You need not be afraid of him.
Prior to this text Moses Says a Prophet like me will arise from among the brother

15 f“The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen— 16 just as you desired of the Lord your God at Horeb gon the day of the assembly, when you said, h‘Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die.’ 17 And the Lord said to me, i‘They are right in what they have spoken. 18 fI will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. jAnd I will put my words in his mouth, and khe shall speak to them all that I command him. 19 lAnd whoever will mnot listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him.

this is speaking of Jesus. When your partake or exclaim false Prophecies you run the risk of being an Anti-Christ. When you get taken in on false prophesies you run the risk of death yourself.
One that happened in our life time. They said that Florida would be under water by 2012. That didn’t happen. You can also tell they don’t believe it themselves because I would be building massive dikes around major east coast cities along the Ocean to stop the flooding, they say we don’t have a lot of time, well they sure aren’t doing anything. False prophets.
(Maybe mention aliens)

Using the Name of The Lord to cover sin

“To everyone celebrating Transgender Day of Visibility, I want you to know that your president sees you — Jill, Kamala, Doug, our entire administration sees you — for who you are: made an image of God and deserving of dignity, respect and support,” - Joe Biden
Is it true that God has made every man and women in his image yes. Has God made mistakes in the creation of everyone? No he hasn’t. He can’t bless sin. This is blasphemy

Another one:

When Gov. Gavin Newsom of California unveiled his plan for a billboard advertising campaign inviting women to travel to his state to have abortions
“Need an abortion? California is ready to help,” reads the message to be displayed along Indiana and Oklahoma highways.
In smaller lettering, the ads cite Jesus Christ’s words in the Gospel of Mark: “Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no greater commandment than these. -Mark 12:31
God hates that. Murdering babies is wrong, God hates that. This message is manipulative, it’s evil, it’s blasphemous. And these lies will be accounted for.

Taking and making Oaths

Some traditions say you shouldn’t sware or make an oath at all. You’ll find this in America amongst some of the Mennonite and Amish communities and Some Theologians like John Piper hold this position. They read Matt 5:33-37
Matthew 5:33–37 ESV
33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ 34 But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.
Now I can come to understand how they came up to this. I believe what Jesus is saying here is not prohibiting oaths, but instead saying when you sware as opposed to swearing on anything, like a stack of bibles or your mother or something, when you swear by God you must keep it.

If Jesus had wanted to forbid all swearing in general, he would have had to add “nor by God” to the words “not by the temple, not by the altar, etc.” This was precisely the point.

Why do I hold this verse 33 By the Lord
v34 JEsus is correct the pharisees who would dance around the issue, people still do this today.
v36 you can’t sware by youself because you don’t control yourself
So when you sware “so help you God” let your yes be yes and no be no.
Paul in Romans 9:1-2
Romans 9:1–2 ESV
1 I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— 2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart.
We bear the God who is himself truth, so we must tell the truth or we trangress this law.
We’ve as a society fallen away from this. A man’s word is not his bond anymore. A handshake is not enough you’ve got to get that in writing.
Even perjury is selectively enforced. Some states don’t enforce the so help me God anymore. Once upon a time we believed that God would hold the liar guilty, because as a culture we believed that man was sinful, not as we do today which is man is a blank slate who simply fell on hard times.
As a culture if you give your word, do it. Their are ways to back out, if it leads you to sin, if the thing you’re doing has become impossible, if the other party breaks it.
Don’t enter an oath willynilly, be wise when you give your word. Your bonding yourself before God. -Marriage as an example.
Old Church Law also forbids Children from taking Oaths, that seems wise, don’t let someone bind your children to something and if they try it’s taking advantage. The mentally defective were also not allowed to take vows. We have to protect these people.

Common issues Using God’s name Flippantly

Thank God I won this hand of scrabble
Throwing OMG or PTL for the inane
When you miss the shot or accidently
When your talking about hell the location, but not telling someone to go their, we don’t want people to go there. It’s an awful place.
God’s name is to be hallowed keep it Holy.

What to do when the situation is evil

Let no corrupting word come from your mouth Eph. 4:29
Ephesians 4:29 ESV
29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
You hurt yourself it would be fine to let out a howl, but.
When great evil has occured or suffering as call it as such, use the fullness of our language, but then on the next breath turn it over to the Lord. Evil and suffering must drive us not to a four letter word, but to prayer and then some sort of action.
This would include gripping, complaining, wining
Paul was a man who you could say had good reason to complain and whine
Philippians 4:10–13 ESV
10 I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. 11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
Whose name do you bear? Do you think your father isn’t going to take care of you?

Gospel

Benediction
1 Thessalonians 5:23–25 (ESV): 23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.
