The
Discerning—Distinguishing
of Spirits

  I.
Two Coexisting Worlds.
The gift of distinguishing between spirits is another gift that is mentioned only once in the New Testament (in the list at 1 Cor.12:10), but the nature of this gift connects it with a number of other passages that describe the spiritual warfare that occurs between Christians and demonic spirits.
We may define the gift of distinguishing between spirits as follows: /Distinguishing between spirits is a special ability to recognize the influence of the Holy Spirit or of demonic spirits in a person/.
A.
The Spiritual World.
1.
Ministering Spirits (Hebrews 1:14)
We are grateful for the Holy Spirit, and for His influence upon our lives for good, convincing us of sin, drawing us to Jesus Christ, and molding and shaping us into the image of Jesus

2.
The Army of Satan (Ephesians 6:12)
There is another realm of spirit beings that is hostile to us & our walk with Christ.
These spirits try to exert and extremely negative influence upon us.
A battle goes on and all of us are engaged in it.
/a)        //Evil Spirits are able to appear as angels of light (2 Corinthians 11:13-15)./
1)        Transforming /themselves /(v.13, 14, 15).
/(a)      /The word means, “to change in appearance,” “to disguise,” or “to masquerade.”
They were false teachers.
This is an outward appearance not inward.
1.         Satan’s emissaries wear religious clothing, & can even stand behind a pulpit.
Use words as God, Jesus and the Bible.
2.         Satan is never more satanic then when he is carrying a Bible.
/(b)                                  /Only God can change us on the inside, He is the one who transforms us into the image of Jesus Christ (Philippians 3:21).
As we continue to gaze into His glory we are transformed into His image (Rom.
8:29; 1Cor.15:49;
Col. 3: 10).
/b)        //The Inability to Discern./
Sometimes we try and analyze our own thoughts: /Did that thought come from God//, from my flesh, or from Satan?  Who planted that thought in my mind?/
1)        Matthew 16:13-17 /Confessing Jesus as “Christ, the Son of the living God”/
2)        Matthew 16:22-23 /Rebuking Jesus.
/
/(a)      /Man’s human capabilities cannot bring understanding of the things of God (1 Cor.2:14).
/(b)      /When a person confesses Jesus as Lord & Savior, has fellowship with Him through His Word, the Spirit opens their minds more & more to the things of God.
/(c)      /“Faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ” (Rom.
10:17).

24:24).
The sad fact is, however, that they will end up misleading many churchgoers.
Mere verbal confession of a doctrinal statement does not guarantee genuine regeneration (cf.
Matt.
7:21–23; Luke 6:46) & that is what /FALSE TEACHERS HAVE!/
In Matthew 7:21–23, Jesus said:

Not everyone who says to Me, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven.
Many will say to Me on that day, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?”
And then I will declare to them, “I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.”
