Disclaimer: “Church Leader” is a pretty vague area that differs from church to church.
As a church member, what can I do to help our church leaders?
1 Timothy 3:1 ESV
The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task.
Appreciate that church leadership is a unique calling.
1 Timothy 5:17 ESV
Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.
Accept that church leadership will come in different forms.
1 Peter 5:1–3 ESV
So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.
Acknowledge that church leaders are asked to thread a pretty tight needle.
2 Corinthians 11:28–29 ESV
And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches. Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to fall, and I am not indignant?
Know that you do not see everything a church leader does.
Yes … but what can I do to help our church leaders?
Hebrews 13:17 ESV
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.
The Message: “Be responsive to your pastoral leaders. Listen to their counsel. They are alert to the condition of your lives and work under the strict supervision of God. Contribute to the joy of their leadership, not its drudgery. Why would you want to make things harder for them?”
Be responsive and listen.
Make their work more joyful, not more painful.
Hebrews 13:18 ESV
Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things.
Pray for your church leaders, especially for their character and conscience.
Hebrews 13:20–21 ESV
Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
Pray for your church leaders, that they may participate in the work of God and bring Him glory always.
