Romans 1:16-17; 1 Corinthians 15:1-3
Romans 1:16–17 (NLT)
16 For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile.
17 This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.”
1 Corinthians 15:1–3 (NLT)
1 Let me now remind you, dear brothers and sisters, of the Good News I preached to you before. You welcomed it then, and you still stand firm in it.
2 It is this Good News that saves you if you continue to believe the message I told you—unless, of course, you believed something that was never true in the first place.
3 I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said.
INTRODUCTION:
A- What we’ve learned so far:
1- The first Circle: God’s Design.
a- God has a design - a perfect design.
He established a design in his creation of the world. (Genesis 1:31)
Genesis 1:31 (NLT)
31 Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good! And evening passed and morning came, marking the sixth day.
He established a design for all relationships.
The 10 Commandments (Exodus 20:3-17)
2- The Second Circle -Brokenness : The result of mankind choosing to reject God’s Design.
Our rejection of God’s design is called sin.
It is a result of willful choices that we make to reject God’s design. (Romans 3:23; Isaiah 64:6)
Romans 3:23 (NLT)
23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
Isaiah 64:6 (NLT)
6 We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind.
Our sin produces brokenness (personally, relationally, socially, eternally) (Romans 6:23 a)
Romans 6:23a (NLT)
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.
This brokenness expresses itself in behaviors that are our attempt at fixing our brokenness. (Romans 1:18-32)
B- Tonight we are going to look at the third circle, the Gospel, and our needed response to it.
TS: Notice what God’s Word says about the subject. (Read Texts)

I- THE POWER OF THE GOOD NEWS (Romans 1:16-17)

Romans 1:16–17 (NLT)
16 For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile.
17 This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.”

A- The Good News is God’s power . (Romans 1:16)

Romans 1:16 (NLT)
16 For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile.
1- Paul is not ashamed of the Good News (Οὐ γὰρ ἐπαισχύνομαι τὸ εὐαγγέλιον).
2- He not ashamed to proclaim the Good News because of its God-given power (δύναμις γὰρ θεοῦ ).

B- The Good News has the power to make people right in God’s sight. (Romans 1:17)

Romans 1:17 (NLT)
17 This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.”
1- The Good News is possesses the ability to save everyone who believes (ἐστιν εἰς σωτηρίαν παντὶ τῷ πιστεύοντι).
a- This includes both Jew and gentile.
2- This Good News tells us how God makes us right with himself.
a- This takes place completely by grace through faith. (Romans 1:17b)
This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.”
(ἐκ πίστεως εἰς πίστιν)
(Ephesians 2:8-9)
Ephesians 2:8–9 (NLT)
8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.
9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.

II- THE PLAN OF THE GOOD NEWS (1 Corinthians 15:1-4)

1 Corinthians 15:1–4 (NLT)
1 Let me now remind you, dear brothers and sisters, of the Good News I preached to you before. You welcomed it then, and you still stand firm in it.
2 It is this Good News that saves you if you continue to believe the message I told you—unless, of course, you believed something that was never true in the first place.
3 I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said.
4 He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.

A- It is the Good News that saves. (1 Corinthians 15:1-2)

1 Corinthians 15:1–2 (NLT)
1 Let me now remind you, dear brothers and sisters, of the Good News I preached to you before. You welcomed it then, and you still stand firm in it.
2 It is this Good News that saves you if you continue to believe the message I told you—unless, of course, you believed something that was never true in the first place.
1- Paul reminded the Corinthians of the Good News that he preached to them, that they had believed and continued to believe in.
2- It is faith in that Good News that produces salvation.
a- It is not produced by our good works. (Isaiah 64:6; Romans 3:28)
Isaiah 64:6 (NLT)
6 We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind.
Romans 3:28 (NLT)
28 So we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law.
(Philippians 3:3-9)
Philippians 3:3–9 (NLT)
3 For we who worship by the Spirit of God are the ones who are truly circumcised. We rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us. We put no confidence in human effort,
4 though I could have confidence in my own effort if anyone could. Indeed, if others have reason for confidence in their own efforts, I have even more!
5 I was circumcised when I was eight days old. I am a pure-blooded citizen of Israel and a member of the tribe of Benjamin—a real Hebrew if there ever was one! I was a member of the Pharisees, who demand the strictest obedience to the Jewish law.
6 I was so zealous that I harshly persecuted the church. And as for righteousness, I obeyed the law without fault.
7 I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done.
8 Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ
9 and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.

B- The Good News is simple. (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)

1 Corinthians 15:3–4 (NLT)
3 I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said.
4 He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.
1- Christ paid the penalty for our sins when he died on the cross.
(2 Corinthians 5:21)
2 Corinthians 5:21 (NLT)
21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
2- Christ rose from the dead to justify us in God’s sight.
(Romans 4:25)
Romans 4:25 (NLT)
25 He was handed over to die because of our sins, and he was raised to life to make us right with God.
3- We must simply repent and believe the Good News.
(Mark 1:14-15)
Mark 1:14–15 (NLT)
14 Later on, after John was arrested, Jesus went into Galilee, where he preached God’s Good News.
15 “The time promised by God has come at last!” he announced. “The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!”
