Intro:

Peter spends all of chapter two warning us against false teachers and prophets
What’s important to understand is that these false teachers can appear to be normal
They are masters at not getting noticed
Deception is their master skill
They deceive whole households
The Bible refers to them as snakes and wolves in sheep’s clothing
Peter gives us a seminar on how to detect them in the church and keep from following them

Read 2 Peter

1.Facts about False Prophets vs. 1-3

False teachers are in the church today
They are secretive and their goal is to bring destructive heresies
They go so far to deny the deity of the Lord
This is to their own demise
Matthew 24:24 ESV
For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.
False teachers work secretly.
It isn’t that their teaching is secret, but the deceptive nature of their teaching is hidden.
No false teacher ever announces himself as a false teacher.
Even a person who has what appears to be a godly walk and relationship with Jesus Christ can still bring in destructive heresies.
Often times good men who teach lies do the worst damage.
Their lies are accepted far more easily because of the good character of these men.
False teachers are promised swift destruction, even though they aren’t judged fast enough in the opinion of many.
This reminds us that false teachers may be popular.
Just because something succeeds in attracting a crowd of followers, it doesn’t mean that it is of God.
We know that God’s work will always bear fruit, but the devil’s work can also increase.
False teachers always have been and always will be among Christians.
The most distressing fact is that so many Christians will follow their destructive ways.
vs. 3 By covetousness:
False teachers use covetousness - both their own and in their followers.
Many false teachers, both today and in previous times, present a gospel that has self-gratification at its core.
All this is presented with deceptive words because false teaching never announces itself.
Man is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26) and angels are not.
Satan and his angels resented this plan to create a being that would be more closely connected to God than they were

2. Ungodly Will Be judged vs. 4-6

To back up the fact that the ungodly will be judged Peter lays out three examples
First example: Angels not spared
When Satan rebelled against God he took 1/3 of the angels with him
Some were put in chains and cast into darkness
Second example: Judging the World but sparing Noah
Noah was one of eight people who were saved from the flood but everyone else perished
Final example: Sodom and Gomorrah
God turned the cities into ashes
They were condemned to destruction
Made an example for the ungodly

3. Rescuing the Righteous vs. 7-9

The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation
He delivered Lot from the temptation of Sodom
Lot had been oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked
Dwelling among them tormented Lots soul
Seeing and hearing the deeds were a weight on his soul
Psalm 34:15 ESV
The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry.

4.Danger of Following False Prophets vs. 10-22

1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
