Text - Genesis 6.5-9; Matt 19.28;
Genesis 6:5–9 NASB 2020
5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of mankind was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of their hearts was only evil continually. 6 So the Lord was sorry that He had made mankind on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7 Then the Lord said, “I will wipe out mankind whom I have created from the face of the land; mankind, and animals as well, and crawling things, and the birds of the sky. For I am sorry that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. 9 These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God.
Matthew 19:28 NASB 2020
28 And Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on His glorious throne, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Title - The Doctrine of Regeneration
Series - Genesis: The Foundation of Biblical Doctrines

Background

Grk. paliggenesia - renewal
The term ‘regeneration’ is always used in the sense that is most common to the Christian faith - the new birth experience.
There is an earlier use of this word: the renewal of the earth, which Jesus used in Matthew 19.28.
Generation - Grk. genea
refers to people of a certain time period
there is no specific number of years in one generation
the time period could be any number of years, from a person’s life span to an age (grk. aion)
Heb. dor - cycle, lifetime, descent, generation
A “generation” can mean a lifespan or lifetime - Matt 1.17
Matthew 1:17 NASB 2020
17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations.
A generation can mean contemporaries, or people living at the same time - Matthew 11.16; Psalm 95.10; Exodus 1.1-6
Exodus 1:1–6 (NASB 2020)
1 Now these are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob; they came, each one with his household:
2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah;
3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin;
4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
5 All the people who descended from Jacob were seventy people, but Joseph was already in Egypt.
6 And Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation.
Psalm 95:10 NASB 2020
10 “For forty years I was disgusted with that generation, And said they are a people who err in their heart, And they do not know My ways.
Matthew 11:16 NASB 2020
16 “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces, who call out to the other children,
A generation can mean all the people living in an age - Genesis 7.1; Matthew 24.34
Matthew 24:34 NASB 2020
34 Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.
Genesis 7:1 NASB 2020
1 Then the Lord said to Noah, “Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be righteous before Me in this generation.
note - Matthew 24.3 the disciples were asking about the end of the age
Matthew 24:3 (NASB 2020)
3 And as He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”
the Jews believed in 3 ages -
the present age
the coming age
the age before this present age - past age/s
Mark 10:30 (NASB 2020)
30 but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life.
Galatians 1:4 (NASB 2020)
4 who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,
Titus 2:12 (NASB 2020)
12 instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously, and in a godly manner in the present age,
Ephesians 1:21 (NASB 2020)
21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.
Hebrews 6:5 (NASB 2020)
5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come,
(past ages and generations: present and the one before it)
Romans 16:25 (NASB 2020)
25 Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which has been kept secret for long ages past,
Colossians 1:26 (NASB 2020)
26 that is, the mystery which had been hidden from the past ages and generations, but now has been revealed to His saints,
notice -
ages - plural, referring to at least 2 ages in the past
generations - plural, also referring to at least 2 generations in the past

Regeneration has a purpose

why did God judge the generation before the flood?

God saw the wickedness of man

Genesis 6:5 NASB 2020
5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of mankind was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of their hearts was only evil continually.
It was great
It has rejected and ignored God’s warnings
Enoch - Jude 14
Jude 14 NASB 2020
14 It was also about these people that Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord has come with many thousands of His holy ones,
Methuselah - born as a sign to that generation
Noah - 2 Peter 2.5
2 Peter 2:5 NASB 2020
5 and did not spare the ancient world, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly;

Regeneration was the work of God

How did God initiate the regeneration?

God saved a remnant

Genesis 7:1 NASB 2020
1 Then the Lord said to Noah, “Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be righteous before Me in this generation.

God made a complete destruction

Regeneration requires a complete destruction of a previous existing life.
Genesis 6:17 NASB 2020
17 Now behold, I Myself am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which there is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish.

A regeneration will happen again in the future

Jesus prophesied about this

Matthew 24:32–39 NASB 2020
32 “Now learn the parable from the fig tree: as soon as its branch has become tender and sprouts its leaves, you know that summer is near; 33 so you too, when you see all these things, recognize that He is near, right at the door. 34 Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. 36 “But about that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. 37 For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, 39 and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be.
Notice the following -
“this generation will not pass away...”
not the Jewish people
Jesus was referring to the present age
“heaven and earth will pass away...”
heaven and earth will experience a regeneration
“as it was in the days of Noah...”
Jesus was referring to a generation that “passed away”
THE SAME THING HAPPENS IN THE COMING OF THE SON OF MAN

The next regeneration will affect both the heavens and the earth

the first regeneration only affected the earth
Haggai 2:6–7 NASB 2020
6 For this is what the Lord of armies says: ‘Once more in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth, the sea also and the dry land. 7 I will shake all the nations; and they will come with the wealth of all nations, and I will fill this house with glory,’ says the Lord of armies.
Hebrews 12:26–27 NASB 2020
26 And His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heaven.” 27 This expression, “Yet once more,” denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
it will be a complete renewal of heaven and earth
Notice Peter’s perspective -
he shows us three sets of “heaven and earth”
2 Peter 3:3–9 NASB 2020
3 Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, 4 and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue just as they were from the beginning of creation.” 5 For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, 6 through which the world at that time was destroyed by being flooded with water. 7 But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly people. 8 But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. 9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not willing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance.
he connects the next regeneration to the great day of the Lord
2 Peter 3:10–13 NASB 2020
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be discovered. 11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! 13 But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.

It was already prophesied in the O.T.

Isaiah 65:17 NASB 2020
17 “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; And the former things will not be remembered or come to mind.
the millennium was in view
but the fullness cannot be realiized until after the white throne judgment
Revelation 21:1 NASB 2020
1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.
Revelation 21:5 NASB 2020
5 And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.”

Conclusion

Spiritual regeneration reflects the second regeneration that God will initiate -
it is a complete destruction of the old
it will make all things new
2 Corinthians 5:17 NASB 2020
17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
