Introduction

Greetings…
Theme: Great People Of The Bible
Hope: To learn more about these different people in the bible and the lessons their lives can teach us.
Today, we are going to look at one of the more well known people of the bible, Paul’s son in the faith, Timothy.
If you, like me, thought Timothy is mentioned “some” but not “a lot” within the scriptures you, like me, would be mistaken.
When doing a specific search to find everywhere Timothy is mentioned one finds him mentioned 859 times.
Needless to say, we can learn much from this man and his work in the kingdom.
However, the most powerful lesson we can learn from Timothy has to do with “relationships.”
Every person will be judged on how they lived their life whether good or evil (2 Corinthians 5:10).
And who we have relationships with can help molds us in the right direction as we see with Timothy.
So, let’s look this afternoon at two of Timothy’s relationships that molded his life.
First let’s consider his…

Biological Family

Grandmother, Mother, Father.

Timothy was raised a Jew by his mother and grandmother who taught him the “sacred writings” from the time he was young.
2 Timothy 1:5 ESV
5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.
2 Timothy 3:15 ESV
15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
Timothy’s father however, was not a Jew nor did he allow Timothy to fully live like a Jew it would appear.
Acts 16:3 ESV
3 Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him, and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.

Summary

God obviously wants each parent to play a vital role in their children’s lives teaching them about him.
However, a single faithful parent and/or a grandparent can have a great impact spiritually on children’s lives even if they are not witnessing faithfulness in both.
Blood family relationship matter but so to do…

Spiritual Family

Apostle Paul.

Timothy was already a disciple of Christ before Paul met him yet there was something in this young man’s life Paul admired and wanted to help cultivate.
This led to Timothy, as we just read in Acts 16:3 accompanying Paul on his missionary journeys.
While together Paul began to build a great relationship with Timothy even considering him his child in the faith.
1 Timothy 1:2 (ESV)
2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith…
Yes, Timothy’s mother and grandmother had a great impact on Timothy’s faith but Paul help mature it to great heights.
Paul’s leadership help Timothy become a powerful preacher even in the face of adversity.
Timothy was left to preach in Ephesus where the eldership would, at some point, turn on Christ (Acts 20:29-30) and already had a number of false judaizing teachers.
1 Timothy 1:3–4 ESV
3 As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, 4 nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith.
Paul trusted Timothy enough to send him to Thessalonica to make sure the church was doing ok after he was kicked out of town.
1 Thessalonians 3:1–2 (ESV)
1 Therefore when we could bear it no longer, we were willing to be left behind at Athens alone, 2 and we sent Timothy, our brother and God’s coworker in the gospel of Christ, to establish and exhort you in your faith

Summary

Even the passage we just read when Paul wrote, “we were willing to be left behind at Athens alone” it tells us of Paul’s great love for Timothy.
The word “left” means to be abandoned and therefore Paul felt so utterly alone or abandoned when he was without Timothy his “true child in the faith.”

Conclusion

Relationship will always provide a great role in peoples lives which is why God says where possible “choose wisely” your relationships (1 Corinthians 15:33; 2 Corinthians 6:14).
As parents we have a great responsibility to our children to raise them to put God first no matter what.
As older Christians in the congregation of children we have a great responsibility to help raise those children to put God first no matter what as well in their lives.
May it never be said that we hindered that in the lives of the children God has in trusted to us.
Invitation
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
Romans 10:17 ESV
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Hebrews 11:6 ESV
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Acts 17:30 ESV
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
Matthew 10:32 NKJV
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.
2 Thessalonians 1:8 ESV
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 ESV
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
Romans 6:3–5 ESV
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
1 John 1:7 ESV
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
