The Ideal vs. The Reality
The Ideal: A Family of Families
Church and Family in Ephesians 5 & 6
Ephesians 5:32 ESV
This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.
Joshua 24:15 ESV
And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
The Ideal
Praying Together as a Family
Worshipping Together as a Family
Serving Together as a Family
The Reality: Confusion, Isolation, & Messiness
Matthew 19:3 ESV
And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?”
1 Corinthians 7:10–11 ESV
To the married I give this charge (not I, but the Lord): the wife should not separate from her husband (but if she does, she should remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband), and the husband should not divorce his wife.
1 Corinthians 7:12–13 ESV
To the rest I say (I, not the Lord) that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he should not divorce her. If any woman has a husband who is an unbeliever, and he consents to live with her, she should not divorce him.
Divorce, singleness, and spiritual singleness is not new to the church.
We welcome the mess without giving up the ideal.
1 Corinthians 7:14 ESV
For the unbelieving husband is made holy because of his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy because of her husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.
You are God’s tool for holiness in your family.
1 Peter 3:1–2 ESV
Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct.
Your behavior in your family will shape their perception of Christianity.
Every family has a religion. What is yours?
