Welcome to church of the Messiah. Shabbat shalom.

I think, you know of all respect Frank, all respect.

Okay.

Alright, next year.

Yesterday was Jerusalem, day in the land of Israel. Flag, has to be all over the world 2.

Celebrating the retaking of Temple Mount and East Jerusalem in the Six-Day War. I wanted to say is a picture of sunrise in Jerusalem and I also went to pray for Jerusalem today, will do prayer 14 and 15 of the army. Prayers. These are the 18 or 19 benedictions that are said, multiple times daily.

In the Jewish World. So here's prayer 14 from the Army now pray along with me, please return Mercy. This is oh dear God. Praying to God, dear God returned and mercy that we shall on your city and dwelling it as he promised rebuild it soon. And are they as an external structure and quickly set up in it? The Throne of days meeting with fire blessed, are you? Oh Lord, who rebuilds yellow Shania, Twain.

State of Ben's translation. Here's / 15. And speedily cause The Offspring of your servant, David the flourish and then he be exalted by your saving power. For we wait all day long for your salvation blessed. Are you Lord? Our God causes your shoe at flourish. that we have a You sure, his name is the sound of his name is in this prayer and salvation of course issues. And so, I've inserted his name because I, I can't pray this particular prayer, without thinking of him. I can't sink but think that it is divinely put into this set of prayers at this particular place.

This is a prayer for the davidic king.

And the sound of his name. Exist here. So dear God. Bless the the holy city, the apple of your eye. I've called this teaching the servants to Sons Children of the Lord.

I did not tell Havel what to say, it just so happens that she started working on her tour moment long before I start working on my teaching. Okay, I still have her basically. She started noticing some things which forced me to notice them things. And a lot of the things that she said in a slightly different way, but but the emphasis that she found I believe is real, it's really there. So we called the servants to son's Children of the Lord. It is a state teaching out-of-state or from Deuteronomy 14, but it's in many other places.

It all lectionary are reading cyclewear, Deuteronomy 14, you seen the slide already the hosta. Robbie Prophet reading from Isaiah 63,

Amuse more could come out of some 70 1:35, which I did 135 appropriate for the set of readings. And then we had New Covenant readings Apostolic, scriptures in Acts 4:32 and ten 9. And then 2nd Peter which we seen today already I think, did read the second Peter passage and maybe even Doug due to look at it in Torah study and again a plug for Torah study. I think it's one of the things that this kind of mission does the best join us at 9. I know it's a little earlier than 10:30, but, you know, it's if you really want to dig into scripture, I think that's the place to do it. That's where we do it. It was a little while today, not a whole lot of disagreements, but if you were contrary person would love for you to come to Torah study so we can learn from you.

I will be using Xbox scripture reading from Galatians 4, mostly. Your art alley words with ancient reading cycle that we use. Not the one that use people as used today. It's one that we believed was peoples in the land used. During the shoes lifetime. So now it's typical to read through the Bible read through, Moses readings in one year, this reading cycle, it seems that they went through more slowly. They went through and once twice every 7 years,

And unlike the annual reading where the posture of packages are linked by themes in these readings of the hospital. Passages are linked by words. So we do a lot with words here. We really truly believe that this is how you should learn in the land. Growing up, weekly going to synagogue learning from this style. A teaching, this teaching method where things were linked with words and he does this over and over. It is a standard romantic technique. What are tally this weekend? It's an important word. The word people, benigne. Some been in the singular Venom Sons. Prophet children. How about was trying to point this out? Some of your translations will take children because it really goes for both, right? It's not only just Sons. When you see the neem it is children

girls and boys men and women children. Macau showzen.

and the word that Frank notice and dwelt on the most in the Torah Torah, study treasured possession, a unique possession,

Treasured, I think it's a good word to capture the signal on a treasured possession. And I'll be making the point today. That often what's really being said here is that the treasured possession is the children that people could probably to you. You'd probably, if you have kid trade, all the possessions, you own And keep the kids, right? I said probably, you would do your friends so loyal possessions and keep the kids crown jewels with treasures, silver and gold. All that is just the idiomatic for, what's a really precious, which are the people Children. Now you don't have to and you probably understand this when I get out of here you snot-nosed little kids. You annoying little brat get out of here. You don't like kids very much of it. That's because you don't have to but if you have kids and then you understand,

Shangri-La. So are we starting Deuteronomy doubling 14? You are children beneath Sons, you are Talking like Yoda in the passage Sons you are, who are you? Are just about to your God, therefore, you must not gather yourselves and you must not make a bald foreheads for the dead, your people. Holy You have out that you were God and you you say, but has chosen to be a stickler treasured possession from all the people that are on the surface of the Earth.

so happy here up here so that you can so you can see it this is a very beginning of the pathogen 14 and here we are but neem Sons bottom son's you are and then the Divine name l a w a Bernie math, m, l a v, a n. Okay. Sounds good. Nathan Lynette. You won't make baldness between your eyes, how you take off a load to be for him? I mean, she'll Albany Hardiman. Love song for children. You are to the Lord God and I thought, and I don't remember ever seeing that construction ever Do you know how frequently the children of it's real or called the children of Youth? Hey Bob hang in the techs. Can you think because as I loved the moniker, I couldn't think of a single other time that I had seen it. I remember the children Israel being called servants. This is in Harbour zaparcia. Emily mentioned, her Bat Mitzvah. Typically, do you have a section of the Moses reading that are connected to where you were born right now? Like a birthday. If you have the Parsha portion of text three, chapters La Havas has this quote in it that you guys are my slaves. So I remember it this time, it's 25 50 to me but servants or slaves. They are my slaves, they got different Master when they left Egypt. Like that's that's kind of the idea they're no longer slaves if they are still slaves. I just sleep with much better master. K12 actually cares about them. a master who is also the father,

But yeah, this one I recall the children and the children are serving their my service.

But I couldn't remember another time. So course, I looked it up and I didn't see another time. Maybe you can find one in your fancy Bible searching software but I couldn't find the other construction children of God, maybe The children of Youth. Hey love hey no. I I did not see

There are references later in Deuteronomy, where it speaks around the term, it calls them children, it doesn't say it in this exact way, but it does speak about God, the father and they're the children. So this analogy is definitely there, but it doesn't come till later. So then this is Deuteronomy. 14 would be the first one we have in Deuteronomy 32, right? This great song of Moshe at the very end of his life. The Rock, his work is perfect, all his ways are just, he's adjusting a merciful god, a god of faithfulness without a neck, but just an upright, is he but that the children have done correctly with him there. No longer his children because their blemished, they're crooked.

Of course, they're still has children.

do you Lester pay is have I paid this way you foolish intense with people Is not here your father.

The one who created you.

Who made you an established? You he's a very warm like I was saying, fathers can't help it. Try that little kid because they made that kid. I made you, I like you. But I also love you because you're part of me.

Remember the days of old considered the years of a generation to ask your Earthly father and they're really talk about to ask your dad, he will show you. Ask the Elders of the community, they will tell you when the most high gave to the nation's, their inheritance, he divided Mankind, and you fix the borders of the people. According to the number of the sons of God sons of God. You're very long. This is a really tricky reference to something, right? Because in the Greek Septuagint, and in the Dead Sea Scrolls, and in the car comes, it's all over the place. So what's really being said here in the empty, it sons of Israel. Right here. This whatever translation is says, they're using. I think he'll xxn I don't remember what's in the Samaritan, to cook. I really don't. Sorry.

But later was skipping a little bit, but you were on mindful of the rock. So let's even this analogy. He's at the rock that bore them like rocks, don't actually clean. What would this be like a shipping of a rock to create? Another smaller rock. Chip off the old block, right rocks. Don't really mate in order to give birth to anything. So then I'll just water breaks down there. But anyways, you were on my mind was a rock that actually 40. This is Yolanda. This is the basic Hebrew word for getting something for you. You forgot the god that gave you birth, the Lord started. He spurned them because of the provocations of his sons and daughters. Can we have the we have the metaphor here? That's the exact language though. Really only 14 is the only place I could find in the tour. I didn't look everywhere was like 300 places where you see sons of something. I look through all 348 of them so that I could see signs of And of course, we have sons of Noah, we have pounds of ham. We have sons of japheth will send the median. You get too attached to a land area. People group, with something to Adam and Sons of, Esau Sons of Anarchy Sons of Abraham sons of Your Smile, sons of Jacob, sons of Rachel and Leah sons of Ismael, which is probably the most dominant.

Identifier or moniker that we seabonay, you smile. That's the most dominant one sons of Korah sons of Levi, but you don't see son children or sons of Youth, a latte. Except here. So that kind of made me ask, what would I expect in the next chapter to be talked about? He's reminding them your children, or he's not remind me because you haven't said it before you called them servants, but he hadn't called him children. So, what is he going to talk about Marcy feeder? I thought it was kind of peculiar. Actually, you're my children. Don't gas yourself for the dead. I didn't really expect that one. I would have expected something like, you're my children. Therefore, we practice circumcision or will your my children are for, we do these holidays, you're my children. Therefore, keep the shoe box. I didn't see those in the section. I thought that was a little interesting to me.

I b, a b care for your body. Now, I know if maybe don't do the ancient Pagan practice of, slicing yourself for the day, it might also be what people live life. Don't be associated with death. Don't cut yourself for the dead, it might be that but I also think that probably wrapped up in this tote / ourselves for the dead is probably also don't slash ourselves at all. Is just watching yourself pretty okay. If other instances just not for the dead. I don't really think that's what's being said. Here it would be both. Write what a normal parent would tell. His parent would tell their child, take care of your body. Where do stuff like that. That's like related to death and taking practices and that we don't do stuff like that. Don't hurt yourself. That way. Your body is too precious. A child who says, in the section, we call them children properly and I use that as a actual right. Kind of a play on words because kosher is proper it right with their things that I don't want you to eat.

Hobbit Wright Express. We don't know exactly why.

And sometimes a parent tells you something and you don't know exactly why.

And later when you grow up and you realize why, but sometimes you don't agree with us while we can still investigate the Y.

Why does it say not those? And yes, please.

Why does God do that?

I'm sorry. That's okay. Does investigating the why is? Sometimes there's, there's fruit in it. There's value in it.

And sometimes you follow things and you don't know why, but they're they're still good for you. I remember when one of the first week's I came to this congregation love these 12 years and I sat in the Torah study and we were going over something related to food and I sent, you know, even some of those are things that are forbidden are not healthy for you. And Rob said that's not what we say. We don't say that. We don't make it a rational reason necessarily we don't remind doesn't go there. First, your mind should go. I have a loving father who gives me good commands I listen to his voice. I trust him. You want to investigate some other things is why your dad might have given you. Some of these commands are also okay, with your first thought shouldn't be. Oh, it's the health reasons why you gave it to them. I think there are other reasons to like you stay away from certain things.

related to you know, whether these are flesh-eating birds or creatures that

I do think there is a health component to it, but anyways, it's like a parent saying, you know what you should do you should eat. Well, I've lived long enough to tell you that you choose eating that stuff. It's not go well with you. You might you might check the clock for a couple of years but in the end, it will catch up with you. An interesting option. Also talked about time, I'm bringing your time and bring it close. And all the time does is create well as care for the poor, but it also keeps you close to God and regularly at the place where he decides to do. Well, I can hear a parent saying that. Why don't you visit me regularly?

Bring something when you come cuz you must shopping long enough. Bring something. When you come to visit me, that also care for others. Right? Because that's part of the the tithing, the timing system and we had the remission of death also in here, I think it's interesting the things that are discussed right after children.

Because I am thinking about this parent-child relationship as we go through this passage, because he's using this and this is the only place we see it. What is a parent do? A parent loves what we saw from the hospital. They also sometimes punished and have a red. It didn't make a comment about it. I don't know if you read the Isaiah 63 passage, he became an enemy to them and I thought that doesn't sound very parently That was about this and all that long list he suffered when they suffered teeth are children that won't be false to me will be there in just a second. He's saying very like parents, he sings thinking the best of them wanting the best of believing in them hurting when they hurt. and then, They were built so badly, he's f*** then and became their enemy. That's not a parent. But sometimes what the kid thinks his fighting is actually just a loving, it's still the loving the way. They don't want it right? Cut off after the money, tap your cut it off work. You put some boundaries and say some knows you're not going to help them in certain areas and it's like,

No. No. I'm a loving you in a different way. This is actually love that. I'm giving to you. You don't see it but it is love.

Not always, no.

No, I'm not going to be good.

Yeah, well later it is. I think there's a practice there, that's why I mentioned the dead. But yeah, I think both are probably related to the same Megan practice. So the parents I think this is what they do. You receive a child you for eating too long. And that's what I think the normal human impulse God is not exactly like exactly. Like if we can load I think it's safe to say he can love and be right at that. Love is a punishment ability of a parent. I think far too many parents in our world, just think it happens. I could just something that we live together with the kids and there's no intention ality with it, they're learning from us all the time. But no. You actually as a parent you teach things, the best parents are teaching, how to use the screwdriver and how to use this. And how to Not to use the screwdriver and the brakes and right. And then you feed a cat. So these are parent responsibilities. Now, we're thinking of God in his children and we're thinking of us and our children on these two levels.

And what's that responsibility a child obey, sometimes? Even before they can talk, right? I could say no to a one year old doesn't understand that we can't verbalize anything but knows what no means. Doesn't know why I'm saying? No but can still obey the child needs to obey for their safety first, right? So we teach them that new

Then later, they can listen and they can learn, while the parent is training and then get to the point where they really, that's really what God wants from them. This is the cycle, my parents, train children, honor, this is how it all works. How do I say bricks? If the children are honoring and the parents aren't training, then, if the collapses on itself,

What is the parents are training up a child.

Repeat it to them and the children are honoring. Then it will work and things get past that way.

Got it, like, this guy has children and he's been training them. He's been loving them and training and punishing and feeding and protecting. Scooter Hofstra or one of them. He said to them they are indeed. My people children, right? You reference the prophet, here's another Prophet. Prophets are considered the first interpreters of the Torah, right? So we get a reference in the Torah, our children, and then we see it more developed in the prophets. Cuz it wasn't well developed in the Moses writings, really. But in the profits, they pick up on this team and they use it much much more They are children but Nadine, who are not disloyal? I don't think this is like mockery or irony or with the other word. I don't think he's being sarcastic to them here. Oh yeah, they're really my people children, who are not disloyal. Yeah, this is Raquel thing when they're leaving each other and he says you know what, And my children.

They're not going to be disloyal to me. He became a savior for them and all their troubles in Egypt. He was troubled, the angel of his presence, save them. Angel is face-to-face. Angel, might have a theory of him space Angeles, but don't have the time His love and his pity. He redeem that what a father is being to them rushing down, when they're screaming their fingers and sliced cuz they were trying to make ants on a log.

Imagine how it taste.

Delicious. Technicare the Longway Know hard. That is a Gothic are the long way, like it always always flies off because that's exactly what happened to her. He lifted them up, he carried them throughout days of old, however, they were bailed. Like, kids often do not always but sometimes it happens. Grieve the Holy Spirit, the holy spirit that he put right there in their Mist. See if it came in enemy. I think from their side not really needed you to me as an enemy. I think they may have wondered why he was fighting them all the time, and really, he was just dotting them still. Fought against them cuz he was fighting at 5 good.

When people remember the days of old, it is and will show. Where is the one who brought us up from the sea was an or shape. He's going to come back and help us right now.

With the shepherds in the Shepherds of his flock. Where is he? Who put his holy spirit right there. Among us. It was the one true God and his boys arm to go out of the water. Ahead of them to make himself in a turtle named. He let them through the Deep, like a sure-footed, horse to the desert, like cattle, going to the valley Spirits. This is how you led, your people got to make your name. Glorious. Right again. You brought this up in the Torah study and you'll see how appropriate is. It is later. Some people see where we are in Deuteronomy like moccia's retelling of the Ten Commandments. It kind of meats this rough pattern, as he's giving his final speech in Deuteronomy. He's kind of, like, taking through the 10 and Doug mention. We're kind of in a section right now of honoring his name. That's where you are in. Deuteronomy 14, honoring his name and will see it again later in a parable that I found

because, When they act. The way he's telling them in Deuteronomy 14, keep Bears their name. Cuz there is children and when they have two oppositely a boy, he tells them to they still fear his name. Just badly. in pain and they say it's the same thing with us when we Live in the spirit 3 shoot through his ass is too and we do well with their well, we're true representation of what he's like. Then on the other hand we don't we're still bearing his name just badly.

Look down from heaven. Oh God. See from your holy dwelling. Where are your Zeal in your Mighty Deeds? We need you. Where's your inner concern? Your compassion for your children, don't hold back your Our Father. Leave it all behind them, but won't claim us. Even if it's just for an hour, Jacob won't acknowledge that wearing their children. You oh Lord, our father of old is your name.

Why are you letting us wander? Why have you hardened our hearts return for the sake of your servants tribes? I found this small trouble dealing with the idea of you are children of the Lord. It's just a little silly Parable the Lord God blessed. Is he? The Holy Ghost me. He said it's only now when they're in trouble that I'm your father. When it's when you find yourself in trouble you call out to me old father we need you and they replied. Guilty. Yes, it's true. As it says on 77th, I think the Lord You know, I can't tell you how many times I call my dad in trouble. Trouble. I'm out of gas. I don't know where you are in the world. But would you please stop everything you're doing. Come help me.

Doing a project at work and I think I just royally messed it up. I'm glad you're here. Please help. Yes, when you're in trouble, you call on me. Malachi addresses, this Sunday and servants right, father, take whatever you want if you want to be servants. Where's my reference? If you think, I'm your master. Where's my reference? If you think I'm your father, where is my honor? Like I'm not getting, I'm not getting either of these from you guys at this point.

Well, I think sit.

The analogy kind of. Changes in our writings we get servants a little bit but we can't get this metaphor of being sons and daughters and children of God, very strong and our New Covenant writings. And I'm glad for that because it's an analogy, that really resonates with me. Finish Mark Rabon 34-3. There's a commentary note that says there's nice three great analogies that are used in the biblical text. When the people were in the desert it was Shepherd and sheep. That was the analogy that was used in those Wilderness wandering. Shepherd and sheep when they got into the land, the dominant vinedresser and fine. He's tending something there, but in the Messianic age in the Messianic age, but dominant analogy will be father and son. That was pretty interesting commentary.

Because this is also an analogy that we will resonate with us cuz we see it a lot. In our we have this relationship between the Sun and the father Four of our brain because the the sun is our Lord.

The servants, the sun. We see this exact thing in Galatians, both the servants. And the sun's, right, we saw service in Leviticus 22 earlier, and then later in Deuteronomy, they're called Sons prophets, pick this up and they love is an allergy and they dwell on it. Let's look at Galatians for what I'm saying here is that as long as the air is a minor and I think the words are there is actually son as long as the sun is a minor that are is a minor. He's no different from a Slave. Even though he is a legal owner of the estate, rather he is under Guardian than caretakers until the times that by his father. So it was with us, we were children We still are children. I was glad to have it opened up that way. I'm a child So, are you?

Who are slaves to the elemental spirits of the universe? That when the appointed time arrives at the right time. Them for the son, he was born from a woman born into a culture in which legal, it's a perversion of the Torah was the norm. Wow, he just use many words to translate a few words. If I don't blame him cuz I think he's doing a good job here. So that he might redeem those in subjection to the legal is nothing able to be made sons of God.

Shooting at the right time and the right culture. Help us understand many things about the way God wanted us to bear his name.

And we believe this congregation that there is a spirit and there is a letter out of spirit and when we can merge these things to gather the letter and the spirit, we can do it the very best way, it can be done. And the picture of that, if you shoot himself, Merging the letter and the spirit, not throwing the letter away and holding onto the spirit. Not holding onto the letter. But ignoring the spirit, merging both of these things together.

Not because your son's God hasn't sent forth into her. God has sent forth into our hearts, the spirit of his son, the spirit, which cries

Father.

I don't think this is a super special word. I don't know if you've had more, you know, if you have really had a handle on. I mean it's an error maisam. It's been brought into Hebrew. It's been sad. For probably Millenia

Meaning of the father. You are on the end, is the Aramaic. All if at the end of the definite article, just like the hay on the front of Hebrew words and the definite article, the I left on the end of Aramaic words is the definite article, the father.

I think it's just trying to create a an intimacy. It's so it's so much use. Like it is a loan where that's been brought into Hebron all. That's what you call your dad right in modern Hebrew. He's Ava but in Aramaic it is the father.

but there's a closeness there because he's your father, the closest is in the relationship like we know the relationship and their relationship is supposed to be closed.

Through God, you are no longer a Slave.

By the Sun. And if you are son, you're also and are coair with Messiah. Praise. Praise God.

So this Parable that I referenced earlier, I found him smooth. Rob up. Again, looking up. You are children. it says they're what you watching the matter be compared at the beginning of the parable, rabbinic literature to an important person, Senator, whose Sons, and Daughters children, come sword with disreputable people, they rebelled And they went around and they did all manner of things that displease him. I like the prodigal almost terrible. It's kind of sound like particle going on here and they they got down on their luck and they didn't realize how good they had it under the protection of their And they're in such a bad State, they don't really want to go back to dads and self as a parable continues. So they send some Advocates, some delegates and the delegates go to the senator instead, you know, you really should. We have these people over here and you really should be gracious to them and you should support them. He's like who are they? Like a figure children. they're not my children, they're not And mother was promiscuous when I met her. They're not my children and they start quoting a bunch of profit, right? Cuz this is also when you get Jose, like, they're not my children, I don't know. Them know they had his back and forth only using the words of the prophets. Not mine. And finally, the person the person is advocating for them speaks up and he says You cannot deny that they are yours. They look like you.

He look just like you. Now. I think there's the reference to physical similarity in this terrible, but also the idea that the children had Incorporated, many of the things that God had wanted them to you, and how they look in how they ate and how they manage their life schedules. Have your yearly calendar. But they have still done, they joined up with some disreputable people and they worshipped idols and then other things didn't want them to do. But there was still no mistaking, the physical similarity.

And this is, I think a challenge to all of us because we live in a culture. That is so highly influenced by God in his ways. That we sometimes don't stand out, I think as much as we should. Just living life looking like everybody else. You know, the cross on the Chain doesn't mean what it used to. Maybe it does now cuz it's still has gone so far that comes back, it actually does mean something. Their children that look just like him. This is what God wants for us. The way we bear. His name children who look like him and act like him can't be denied.

The father seeks a relational closeness. Right. Because this is analogy that we're dealing with. In this satyr the analogy in the the great analogy of the Messianic era is father and children the father seeks a relational closeness with you. Shovel load is coming up next week. This skit was designed to get you thinking in this direction. To get you thinking that there is a experience that can still be had a freshness that can still be there in our life cycle, right? We don't think every week it's a huge high but there are holidays.

We look to to emphasize renewal. And this is certainly one of them, he thinks a closeness with you. Hey, hey buddy, I hear you up there. I got it, it's already closed. I'm close with God. I'm close with God 3, ishua Got it.

He wants. An even closer closeness with you.

He has a new experience, he wants to share with you. if you're open to it, And it's close to psi. I believe he wants, this is matched by a resemblance. He wants us.

He wants us to look like him in the way, we Act. The Way We Carry ourselves present ourselves.

So people know where he is.

I'll pray. And we can be finished.

Father in Heaven. I think about the upcoming holiday this week. And all the meanings associated with it.

Yes, we believe your twirl is given and your instructions are so important for changing us. Making us different from the world. your spirit would believe it also given at this time, helping us

What happened to what you want. To hear your prompt things. I can pick this up, send to keep us on a good path. These two things, your written word in your spirit working together. Make us look different from everyone around us. What children? I know everyone. Everyone on Earth. Could be considered your child. I know you love everyone.

And there's some that don't. I know of your great love for them.

Do we do?

And this love. Should Propel us compel us to honor. You like a good father because you are

Movie, Bear, your name. Well, this week, as we look forward to an experience with you learning, something new about you learning, something new about ourselves learning something new experiencing something new. For the holiday.

Repair your name. Well,

I will know what you're like.

Because we bear a resemblance to you.

Tunisia.
