Let me introduce You

John 1:29-34 “29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.””
What is sin?
Romans 5:20-21 “20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
What can cover sin?
The sacrificial system was created by God for man to cover his sin. The covering of sin requires blood. Every day of the year a sacrifice was made in the morning and again in the evening.
Leviticus 17:11 “11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life.”
What washes away our sin?
The whole sacrificial system was a picture of the sacrifice to come.
Hebrews 9:11-18 “11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God. 15 Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant. 16 For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established. 17 For a will …”
Jesus death on the cross fulfills the promise in Isaiah 1:18
Isaiah 1:18 “18 “Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.”
Son of man = 80 times = Jesus humanity
Son of God = 23 times = Jesus Divinity
Lamb of God = 29 times = payment for sin
Jesus was before John the Baptist
John is 6 months older
The story of John and Jesus conception are listed in Luke 1. His parents were advanced in years. In case you didn’t catch that, “They were old.” Elizabeth was barren, she was not having a child, but God in his purpose changed that.
When Gabriel came to speak with Mary he told her Elizabeth was 6 months along already. John was conceived first.
Keep that in mind.
Jesus was born 6 months later than John os technically he was younger yet he was before John and older.
Why? Because Jesus is God and creator of everything. Remember John 1:1?
John bore witness
John saw what happened when the Holy Spirit in the likeness of a dove descended on Jesus marking him as the Son of God.
Back to last week. What was Johns authority to baptise and to call the people to repentance?
God sent John to baptise
There’s his authority.
Finally, John stated out loud, “this is the Son of God”
Why does that matter? For the same reason we are told in Romans 10 to confess with our mouth. What we confess or bear witness to matters. If we deny Jesus, even by saying nothing, Jesus will deny us before the Father,
Matthew 10:33 “33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.”
Is there enough evidence to convict you of being a Christ follower?
If not, why not?
Romans 10:9-10 “9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.”
Your ETERNAL life depends on it.
