I. Introduction

Because it is Mother’s day, we are interrupting our regularly scheduled message today from our series on “The Revelation of the True God in Exodus.”
We thought it good and even necessary to honor mothers of DPCC and of all the family of God worldwide primarily because the Scriptures themselves teach us to honor our fathers and mothers: in Moses’ Law in Exodus 20:12 and Deuteronomy 5:16 ; in Matthew 19:19, Mark 10:19, and Luke 18:20, and explicitly for Christians in Ephesians 6:1.
Today I want to speak about the suffering that godly mothers endure for the sake of Christ in order to encourage every mother among us to persevere and keep your joy no matter what happens in your life.
The writer of Hebrews helps us to do this today in Hebrews 12:1-2. It reads,
Hebrews 12:1–2 ESV
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

I. Childbirth.

Let us begin with Jesus’ analogy of suffering before joy in John 16:21.
John 16:21 ESV
21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.

II. Suffering in the character of her children.

Proverbs 10:1 ESV
1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.
Proverbs 17:25 ESV
25 A foolish son is a grief to his father and bitterness to her who bore him.
Proverbs 29:15 ESV
15 The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.
Proverbs 23:24–25 ESV
24 The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him. 25 Let your father and mother be glad; let her who bore you rejoice.

III. Suffering with one’s husband

Job 1:18–22 ESV
18 While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 19 and behold, a great wind came across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 20 Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” 22 In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.
Job 2:6–10 ESV
6 And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand; only spare his life.” 7 So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and struck Job with loathsome sores from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. 8 And he took a piece of broken pottery with which to scrape himself while he sat in the ashes. 9 Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die.” 10 But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

IV. Mother’s must continue to look to Jesus for joy!

Hebrews 12:1 ESV
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
Hebrews 12:2 ESV
2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
BDAG Definition for “looking”: to direct one’s attention without distraction, fix one’s eyes trustingly
BDAG Definition for “founder”: the one who begins or originates
BDAG Definition for “perfecter”: one who brings something to a successful conclusion

The joy set before him is also the joy set before you!

Luke 24:26 ESV
26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”
Hebrews 2:10 ESV
10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.
Isaiah 53:10–11 ESV
10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. 11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.
